วันแรกในการเรียนรู้การฝึกสุนัขต้อนแกะจาก ทันย่า เพื่อนและครูสอนต้อนแกะ ชาวเบลเยี่ยม ของพวกเรา
เหมือนคนขายเพชรอยากเห็นเพชรดิบ สิบกว่าปีที่ผ่านมานี้ พวกเราเลี้ยงสุนัขBorder Collie เพิ่มขึ้นเรื่อยๆ จนปัจจุบันเกือบ30ตัว และพวกเราก็อยากกลับไปเรียนรู้ถึงต้นตอว่า สุนัขสายพันธุ์ที่เริ่มเพาะพันธุ์เพื่อต้อนแกะนี้ ทำงานยังไง
ครอบครัวเขาค้อตามมาา ..
วันนี้ฟ้าปลอดโปร่ง มีแดด ( ซึ่งทันย่าบอกว่าโชคดีมาก และเธอภาวนาทุกคืนให้ไม่มีฝน ) ลมพัดเย็นชื่นใจ เริ่มฤดูใบไม้ร่วงแล้ว
สนามฝึกต้อนแกะของทันย่ามีป้ายชื่อ Luna Tale BorderCollie บนเหล็กขอบประตูรั้ว น่ารักมาก ด้านในเป็นทุ่งหญ้ากว้าง หมีบอกว่าน่าจะสิบไร่ หญ้านุ่มๆเส้นยาว ซึ่งก็คือหญ้าที่ปลูกพิเศษสำหรับแกะ 12 ตัวของเธอ ( เอาไว้เล่าเรื่องแกะที่หลังอีกที )
หญ้ามีน้ำค้างสีเงินเกาะอยู่ เหมือนในภาพสารคดีเลย ทันย่าให้พวกเราเตรียมรองเท้าบู๊ทมาจากเมืองไทยเพื่อจะได้ไม่ทำรองเท้าเปียก
สุดสนามเป็น Sheep stable ให้แกะนอนในร่มถ้าต้องการ หรือจะออกมาเดินเล็มหญ้าด้านนอกก็ได้ตามต้องการ แกะจะอยู่อย่างอิสระ
ตรงกลางเป็นอ่างน้ำที่ทันย่าเดินไปเอาถังรองน้ำมาเติมใส่เป็นอันดับแรก นี่คือที่พักของหมาเมื่อใช้เวลาและพละกำลังในการฝึกไปตามสมควร ในการฝึกครั้งนึงอาจจะได้รับคำสั่ง ‘ไปแช่น้ำ ’ หลายครั้ง
ซึ่งแม้ตัวจะแช่น้ำ แต่ยังมองแกะไม่วางตา มหัศจรรย์ไม่วอกแวก เราแกล้งยื่นกล้องไปถ่ายใกล้ๆ จนจะชนขนตา พวกนางยังไม่เสียสมาธิ สุด!
เนื่องจากในครั้งนึ้พวกเรามาด้วยความอยากรู้และประสบการณ์เป็นศูนย์ วันแรกจึงเรียกได้ว่าเป็น Introduction to Border Collie Sheep Herding Training ซะมากกว่า
วันนี้ทันย่าแสดงการต้อนระดับมืออาชีพ ให้เห็นผลลัพธ์ของสิ่งที่ต้องการฝึกหลักๆ แบบเป็นรูปธรรมก่อน
เช่นต้อนแกะที่อยู่ไกลๆ ให้รวมกลุ่ม เดินมาหาHandlerแบบสวยงาม ถ้าหมาเก่งทำงานเรียบร้อย จะวิ่งรอบแกะแบบห่างที่สุด และต้อนไกลโดยอยู่ไกลจากแกะที่สุด หน้าตาท่าทาง แน่นอน! ต้องไม่หื่นกระหายอยากได้แกะม้ากกก 🤣 เพราะแกะจะกังวลตื่นตกใจ บางตัวจะโมโหด้วยซ้ำ - ฉันอยู่ของฉันดีๆนะเห้ย
และการต้อนแกะแบบโจทย์ยากอันนึง ที่พาแกะมารวมกันแล้วแบ่งเป็นสองกลุ่ม จากนั้นหมาต้องเดินฝ่าตรงกลาง กลับมาหาHandler อย่างเท่ๆ ไม่หันไปมองแกะเลยทั้งที่อยากมองใจจะขาด
ทันย่าแสดงการฝึกให้ดูหลายๆแบบ
เอาไว้มีโอกาสค่อยเล่าต่อ เรื่องมันจะยาวไป
การฝึกต้อนแกะ เรียกว่าเป็นการฝืนสัญชาตญาณของหมาที่รักแกะมากๆ อยากอยู่ใกล้แกะแบบใกล้ชิด ( นึกถึงลูกๆเราก็เช่น นั่ง หมอบ จ้องจิ้งจก จ้องแมว จ้องนกที่เราเลี้ยงไว้ พยายามเข้าไปอยู่ใกล้ให้เห็นชัดๆ แล้วจ้องได้เป็นชั่วโมง ๆ )
แต่การฝึกแบบนี้เป็นการฝืนสัญชาติรักแกะ ทำให้Handlerต้องแข็งแกร่ง ทั้งร่างกายและจิตใจ ถ้าหมาสติหลุด ก็ต้องตะคอกเรียกสติ
ซึ่งต่างจากการฝึกสุนัขเพื่อลงแข่งกีฬา ที่เราจะไม่ตะคอก หรือส่งเสียงดังเกินไปถ้าไม่จำเป็น เพราะอาจจะทำให้สุนัขกังวล
วันศุกร์ที่ 18 กันยายน 2569 เป็นฤกษ์ปลอด
และ ‘ฤกษ์ดี’ ตลอดทั้งวัน เหมาะสำหรับการทำบุญขึ้นบ้านใหม่ ซื้อรถยนต์ใหม่ เปิดร้าน และเจรจางาน : 😙 นึกได้ กดโทรศัพท์ไปอ่านนิดนึง เพราะมีความรู้สึกถึงแรงบันดาลใจที่ดีมากๆ และดีใจที่วันนี้เป็นฤกษ์ดีสำหรับเริ่มสิ่งใหม่ๆในชีวิต
จบการเรียนวันแรก ทันย่าและคริส 🙏 พาไปเดินเล่นในตัวเมือง Antwerp เมืองหลักของเขต Zadhoven ที่พวกเราอยู่ จะเล่าในตอนต่อไป

Here we go! Sorry for keeping you waiting, the schedule has been packed. From now on I'll post gradually naaa~
Day one of learning sheepdog training from Tania Heivers , our Belgian friend and agility & herding trainer.
It's like a diamond dealer wanting to see raw diamonds. For over ten years, we've been raising more and more Border Collies, now almost 30 dogs, and we wanted to go back and learn at the source how this breed, originally bred for herding sheep, actually works.

Today the sky was clear and sunny (Tania said we were very lucky, and she prays every night for no rain). A cool, refreshing breeze, autumn is starting.
Tania's herding training field has a sign that says "Luna Tale BorderCollie" on the iron gate fence — so cute. Inside is a wide meadow, Meeh said it's probably about 10 rai. The soft, long-bladed grass is special grass grown for her 12 sheeps (I'll tell you about the sheep later). The grass had silvery dewdrops on it, just like a picture in a documentary.
Tania told us to bring boots from Thailand so our shoes wouldn't get wet.
At the far end of the field is a Sheep stable where the sheep can sleep indoors if they want, or come out to graze outside as they please. They live freely.
In the middle is a water tub that Tania fills first thing by carrying buckets of water to it. This is where the dogs rest after using up time and energy in training. In one session, they might get the command 'go soak' several times, and even while soaking in the water, they still keep their eyes on the sheep without looking away.
Truly focused and undistracte that I teased them by putting the camera close, almost touching their eyelashes, and they still didn't lose focus. 😂 Amazing.
Since this time we came with pure curiosity and zero experience, the first day was more like an Introduction to Training Border Collies to herd sheep.
Today Tania demonstrated professional-level herding to show us concretely what the main training goals look like, like herding distant sheep into a group and bringing them beautifully to the Handler. If the dog is skilled and does the job neatly, it will run around the sheep at the widest distance and herd from as far away from the sheep as possible. And their expression and posture — of course! Must not look overly eager to get the sheep 🤣 Because the sheep will get anxious and startled, some even get angry — like "Hey, I was minding my own business!"
And one of the difficult herding exercises: bringing the sheep together, splitting them into two groups, then the dog has to walk straight through the middle and come back to the Handler so coolly, without looking back at the sheep at all, even though it desperately wants to look.
Tania showed us many types of training, I'll tell more when I have a chance, otherwise it will get too long.
Herding training is about going against the instinct of a dog that loves sheep so much and wants to be close to them (think of our own kids — sit, lie down, staring at a gecko, staring at the cat, staring at the bird we keep, trying to get close to see clearly and staring for hours).
But this training goes against the instinct of loving sheep, so the Handler has to be strong, both physically and mentally. If the dog loses focus, you have to shout to snap it back, which is different from training dogs for sport competitions where we won't shout or make loud noises unless necessary, because it might make the dog anxious.
Friday, September 18, 2026 is an "auspicious day" and a "good day" all day long, suitable for merit-making for a new house, buying a new car, opening a shop, and negotiating work : 😙 I remembered and checked my phone a bit, because I felt a really good inspiration and I'm happy that today is a good day to start new things in life.
End of the first day of class. Tania and Kris Hollants 🙏 took us for a walk in Antwerp, the main city of the Zandhoven district where we are staying. Will tell you in the next episode. Of course, we had b**r, the pride of Belgians, and Chef Meeh showed off his Thai cooking skills.
