Tuvalu Badminton Federation Remains Strong Despite Challenges
The Tuvalu Badminton Federation (TBF) regrets its inability to participate in the recent Oceania Badminton Federation (OBF) online meeting due to an ongoing power shortage affecting the mainland of Funafuti. While this unforeseen situation limited virtual engagement, it has not diminished TBFโs determination and commitment to the growth of badminton in Tuvalu.
Despite infrastructural challenges, TBF continues to demonstrate resilience and dedication by maximizing the resources available to develop the sport at all levels. From grassroots participation to community-based initiatives, the federation remains focused on strengthening badminton across the islands.
TBF reaffirms its commitment to working closely with regional and international partners and looks forward to actively engaging in future OBF activities. The federation stands firm in its mission to promote sport, unity, and opportunity for all, proving that even in the face of adversity, progress and passion for badminton in Tuvalu remain unwavering.

๐ธ SPORTS UPDATE | Tuvalu Badminton Federation
Commonwealth Sports Badminton Relay Programme โ Kavatoetoe Community
The Tuvalu Badminton Federation (TBF), under the initiative of the Tuvalu Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (TASNOC), proudly delivered the Commonwealth Sports Badminton Relay Programme in the Kavatoetoe community โ bringing sport, environmental awareness, and safe play opportunities directly to local families.
The programme focused on young children and parents in a community where access to safe play spaces and structured sport activities remains limited. Many children face social and economic challenges, highlighting the importance of creating inclusive, positive, and safe environments that promote wellbeing and resilience.
๐ฑ Environment Meets Sport
The day began with an engaging waste awareness session led by the Department of Waste, educating families on waste separation and environmental responsibility. This powerful message set the tone for responsible community action.
๐ธ Air Badminton in Action
Children were then introduced to Air Badminton, an exciting and adaptable version of the sport suitable for small spaces and outdoor environments. The energy was high, participation was strong, and smiles were everywhere as children eagerly embraced this new activity.
To ensure inclusivity, a TBF member and TASNOC Safeguarding Officer introduced beginner skills using balloons โ creating a fun, safe, and confidence-building experience for children of all ages and abilities.
๐ Key Achievements
Increased access to safe and structured physical activity
Strong participation from children and parents
Successful introduction of Air Badminton as a low-cost, space-friendly sport
Improved environmental awareness within the community
Positive social interaction supporting childrenโs emotional wellbeing
Recognition of Air Badminton as a practical solution for communities with limited infrastructure
๐ Moving Forward
Building on the success of the programme, TBF aims to:
Continue regular Air Badminton sessions in Kavatoetoe
Strengthen safeguarding and psychosocial support in community sport
Train parents and volunteers to sustain activities
Enhance collaboration with TASNOC, the Department of Waste, and community leaders
Provide basic outdoor Air Badminton equipment
Monitor long-term impact on childrenโs wellbeing and participation
๐ Sport for Development in Action
With limited play areas available, Air Badminton has proven to be a practical, child-centred, and community-driven solution. By utilising open spaces, church grounds, school compounds, and household areas, the programme demonstrates how sport can adapt to local realities while strengthening social protection and community ownership.
TBF sincerely thanks TASNOC, the Department of Waste, community leaders, parents, and volunteers for their valued support.
This initiative marks another meaningful step toward building safer communities, protecting children, and strengthening sustainable sport development in Tuvalu.
