Team Up – Play for Equity Fund Continues to Empower Girls Through Sport

The Team Up – Play for Equity Fund continues to support and strengthen its development programme in Tuvalu, with a strong focus on increasing girls’ participation and leadership in sport.

The programme provides girls with greater opportunities to participate in badminton, develop their skills, build confidence and promote teamwork in a safe and inclusive sporting environment. Through continued activities and coaching, the initiative aims to create stronger pathways for girls to remain active in sport and contribute to the future development of Tuvalu’s sporting community.

Tuvalu Badminton Federation Strengthens Coaching Capacity

Maaola and Esau represented the Tuvalu Badminton Federation (TBF) at a coaching course held in Nadi, Fiji, organised by Badminton Oceania. The two representatives participated in practical and theoretical coaching activities, gaining valuable knowledge and skills to further support badminton development in Tuvalu.

Their participation is a significant benefit to the Tuvalu Badminton Federation, as the knowledge and coaching skills gained from the course will be shared with local coaches, players and the wider badminton community. The training will also strengthen TBF’s capacity to deliver quality coaching programmes and support the continued growth and development of badminton in Tuvalu.

The Team Up – Play for Equity Fund continues to be a valued partner of the Tuvalu Badminton Federation, supporting our commitment to empowering girls through sport.

Today, the Play for Equity Fund returned stronger than ever, expanding its support to encourage even more girls to participate in badminton through educational and life-skills programs before beginning their basic badminton coaching sessions with our certified Shuttle Time Teacher Coaches.

The program will now run every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, providing girls with a safe and inclusive environment where they can learn, grow, and develop both on and off the court.

The Tuvalu Badminton Federation sincerely thanks the Team Up – Play for Equity Fund for its ongoing partnership and dedication to increasing girls' participation and ensuring they remain actively engaged in our development programs.

In the coming weeks, participants will also benefit from a range of educational sessions covering important topics such as health, personal safety, gender equality, leadership, and many other life skills, helping to build confidence and create positive opportunities for young girls.

Nanumaga, Tuvalu – Badminton is making a strong comeback at Lotohoni Primary School as students and teachers embrace the sport through the successful delivery of the Shuttle Time Grassroots Development Programme.

The programme was coordinated by Shuttle Time Teacher Coach Mr. Nai Peni, who introduced students to the fundamental skills of badminton in a fun and inclusive learning environment. The initiative aims to encourage young people to participate in sport while promoting healthy and active lifestyles.

The enthusiasm shown by both students and teachers was outstanding, with the school community expressing its commitment to making badminton a regular part of school activities. Following the success of the programme, Lotohoni Primary School has confirmed that it will continue to develop and promote badminton, providing more opportunities for students to learn, play, and enjoy the sport.

The revival of badminton at Lotohoni Primary School is another positive step in growing grassroots badminton across Tuvalu and inspiring the next generation of young athletes.

As usual, the Monday gathering proved to be a highlight of the local badminton calendar, bringing the community together through their shared passion for the sport.

Niutao Hall was buzzing with activity on Monday evening as badminton enthusiasts turned out in impressive numbers for the weekly Shuttle Time session. Players of all ages took to the courts, engaging in exciting rallies and competitive matches while enjoying the camaraderie that has become a hallmark of the event. The vibrant turnout once again highlighted the growing enthusiasm for badminton within the community.

Six emerging leaders have successfully graduated with a Certificate in Shuttle Time Youth Leadership following the completion of a training programme conducted by the Oceania Badminton Development Officer in March this year at the Niutao Hall.

The programme equipped participants with essential leadership, communication, and badminton development skills, empowering them to play an active role in promoting and growing the sport within their communities. The graduation marks another important milestone in Tuvalu Badminton's commitment to developing young leaders and strengthening grassroots badminton across the country.

The Tuvalu Badminton Federation's Social Badminton programme on Monday, 8 June, was another exciting evening filled with energy, learning, and fun.

Young participants turned out in great numbers and thoroughly enjoyed the Monday night badminton session. The programme continues to provide children with an opportunity to develop their badminton skills, stay active, and build friendships in a safe and enjoyable environment.

Seeing the smiles, enthusiasm, and growing confidence of the young players is a testament to the positive impact of badminton in our community.
