Packaging can be designed to save food

To mark the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste on 29 September, WPO World Packaging Organisation has globalised the Save Food Packaging Design Guidelines, produced by its member, AIP.

The document shows how good design can help minimise food loss and waste by:

✔️Protecting products
✔️Preserving freshness
✔️Extending shelf life
✔️Improving opening, resealing and portion control
✔️Providing clear storage and usage information

What can packaging do to reduce food loss and waste?

Intuitive, fit-for-purpose packaging protects food throughout its journey. It can prevent damage and contamination, preserve freshness, extend shelf life and help consumers reduce waste through resealability, portion control and clear information.

Reducing food loss and waste starts at the packaging design stage.

Food loss and waste is a global challenge

Every year, around one-third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted; approximately 1.3 billion tonnes, according to Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations .

On 29 September, WPO World Packaging Organisation will join the global community in observing the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste.
