The Senior Four student tragically drowned in Lake Bunyonyi, one of Uganda’s most scenic lakes, while attempting to swim from one island to another in Rubanda District.

The deceased has been identified as Amanya Samuel, 22, a student at Lake Bunyonyi Senior Secondary School, Bwama, who allegedly drowned at around 11:00 AM on Saturday, 3rd October.

Reliable sources allege that Amanya Samuel paddled a canoe from Katoma to Itambira Island and arrived safely, but on his return he found the canoe had been taken from where he had docked it.

Stranded without a canoe and determined to reach the other side, the deceased reportedly chose to swim across the deep waters between Itambira and Bwama Islands, a fateful decision that tragically proved fatal.

The Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, confirmed the incident, noting that the findings indicated that the young student was unable to complete the swim and drowned between the two islands.

Tumushime added that the Police Marine Unit, working alongside local divers, responded swiftly to the scene and successfully retrieved the body from the waters.

“We convey our sincere condolences to the family, school administration and fellow students, while appealing to parents, guardians, school administration and communities to caution students against swimming in deep waters of Lake Bunyonyi without adult supervision and life-saving jackets,” SP Tumushime remarked.

Police have since opened a formal inquiry to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy, while conveying heartfelt sympathies to the family, school administration, and fellow students affected by the loss.

73 Lubiri High School students have today escaped a bus accident thanks to public intervention in Rubaga!

The students were travelling aboard bus UAQ 079W, belonging to Jeju Express Bus Company for a study tour at UMA–Lugogo but the bus reportedly lost control which prompted the conductor to alert the public and together with members of the community, they managed to stop it by throwing stones under it.

Police responded immediately and found that the bus was carrying 73 students instead of 67, had an expired PSV licence, no clearance from the Ministry of Education, no 3rd party insurance and had not been inspected by the Ministry of Works and Transport.

The driver, conductor & patron have been detained to assist with investigations.
Fortunately, no injuries were registered.

SECURITY GUARD FOUND DEAD IN NAGURU SWIMMING POOL

A 24-year-old security guard, Andrew Tumusiime, from Hoima District has been found dead in a swimming pool at a residence on Plot 10, Naguru, Kampala.

Tumusiime, an employee of SGA Security Company, had reportedly been deployed to guard the property after its occupants left the residence two days earlier. He was working alongside another security guard.

According to reports, the incident occurred overnight on October 1, 2026. His daytime colleague, Edison Kyaligonza, reportedly discovered his body floating in the deeper section of the pool after noticing that the gate was open.

Kyaligonza reportedly called Tumusiime's phone, which went unanswered, before noticing the phone ringing near the pool and finding his clothes nearby.

Local residents have speculated that Tumusiime may have been attempting to record himself swimming while on duty, but police have not officially confirmed the motive or whether he was recording a social media video.

Police have also not officially confirmed reports of alcohol involvement as investigations into the incident continue

A 22-year-old man from Wakiso District has been sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of repeatedly assaulting his parents and threatening their lives.

Kajjansi Court Judge Happy Monica convicted Lawrence Barugahare and ordered him to serve his sentence at Kigo Prison.

Lawrence’s mother, Namanya Dina, told court that her son started drinking alcohol while he was still in Primary Three. She said his drinking worsened over the years and was followed by violent behaviour at home.

According to his parents, Barugahare repeatedly beat them, leaving them living in fear and unable to enjoy peace in their own home. They also accused him of threatening to kill them.

The parents welcomed the court’s decision, saying they can now live peacefully without constantly fearing attacks from their son

They said they hope Barugahare’s time in prison will help him change his behaviour and address his alcohol-related problems
