🌽 Soil testing: carry out soil testing to know which nutrients are abundant or lacking in your soil to know which fertilizers to apply, soil pH etc. Maize prefers a PH range between 5.0-7.0
🌽 Soils: Maize prefers deep loam soils that are rich in organic matter. Avoid water logged soils as maize will not perform well
🌽Land preparation: The field should be prepared 2-3 weeks before planting and w**ds buried to rot and keep moisture and increase the organic matter content of the soil.
🌽Seed rate: 10kg of maize (can go up to 12kg if germination percentage is below 90% but above 85%)
🌽Spacing, 75cm*60cm or 2.5ft*2ft
🌽Basal fertilizers: 50kg of DAP fertilizers applying one bottle cup per hole or 400g of organic manure (4-6tonnes per acre)
🌽 Top dressing: 50kg of Urea at knee height. One could also apply foliar fertilizers if plants show nutrient deficiency symptoms especially for micro nutrients.
🌽Pests and diseases can be controlled as they appear for the best results. Apply chemicals such as profenos, lambacyalothrin to control fall armyworm pest and others, Mancozeb, metalaxly, to control fungal diseases etc
🌽Keep the garden w**d free for better results
🌽Mulch if possible to keep soil moisture
🌽Yield potential, with good management, expect 30-40bags of maize grains.
🌽 Post harvest handling:
👉 Dry the grains on cemented floors or on tarpaulins to ensure quality produce
👉Control pests in the store and aflatoxins due to mould growth by storing the grains at the right moisture content (12-13%)
🌽 For more income, process the grains into flour and maize bran if possible which can both be sold at relatively higher prices compared to grains

We were able to transplant over 2000 tomato seedlings (Padma F1) in Buikwe district🍅🍅👌. These were provided with shade using banana stems and leaves to protect them from too much sunshine 🍅🌞
