You guys, I can’t do it anymore. I can’t attack myself. I can’t insult myself. I can’t respond to a compliment by offering up a list of my flaws. I just...can’t. It feels like such a violation of the sacred. I don’t have the heart for self-deprecation anymore. Somewhere along the way, over the past few years, I’ve lost the dark (and particularly female) talent for self-criticism, and for tearing myself down. It feels like sacrilege. My mouth can’t form the hateful words. And I can’t bear it anymore, to hear another woman demean, degrade, or diminish herself. It shocks my senses and hurts my heart. To witness a woman denying that she is beautiful is like watching someone set fire to an art museum. It’s like watching an angel drink gasoline. It’s like watching a Phoenix rip off its wings. I just can’t be around it anymore. It hurts too much. This is my official plea: I beg you to stop doing that. You are a magnificent creature. Start knowing it. Stop lying about yourself. I love you. Restorative Yoga | 5:30PM - In a Restorative yoga class, you will move minimally and use props to encourage deep mind-body release and healing to achieve ultimate relaxation of the mind and body. Rave Restorative Reviews here!

Slow Flow Yoga | 7PM - This class is work, but always a good balance of strength and stretching, but slower paced and gentler than perhaps our lovely Vinyasa classes. Postures are generally held for longer periods, and the transitions between poses are a little slower as well! It's super good and for all levels!

Yoga teachers, students, coaches, trainers, and athletes of all types and levels are invited to welcome Christine Schwan, MS, CCC-SLP, E-RYT200, YACEP, YFG, YSP, CFMS, as a guest educator leading the upcoming workshop, Yoga for Athletes "The Basics".

Christine has been involved with health and fitness her entire life. She incorporates her extensive knowledge of the human body into private yoga/coaching sessions, specializing in corrective alignment, sports specific yoga and rehabilitation with students and athletes of all levels, including professional athletes of the NFL, NBA and MLB.

Date: Saturday, November 11 & 25, 2017
(This is not a 2-part training - Attending both days is not mandatory.)

Title: “Yoga for Athletes: The Basics”

Cost: $50 (per session)

Learning Objectives:
At the completion of the session, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the proper foundation for a yoga posture when standing & sitting.
2. Understand that harnessing power for performance is energetic, mental, and physical.
3. Use their breath to link with movement in the body.
4. Understand movements and function of the body.
5. Describe the stability/mobility model of movement.
6. Experience movement in postures unique to their body.

In the world of sports performance and rehabilitation, many different modalities are being incorporated into an athlete’s workout routine. The introduction of yoga with athletes has been around in the western world since the 1970’s, with Kareem Abdul Jabbar practicing hot yoga since he was 14 years old, and throughout his basketball career. It is the one reason he gives for his extended professional career. Functional movement, dynamic neuromuscular stabilization, flexibility, balance and bio-mechanical alignment are now being picked up by many teams and athletes because they know it makes injury rates go down. When the body is aligned to its natural blue print, opening and healing occur, along with increased athletic performance. Yoga is becoming a valuable tool in the tool box of every athlete.

We must understand what is normal in the body, in order to determine what needs to be strengthened, therefore the basics will begin at the base: our feet. We must understand the structure of the skeletal system, the muscle groups, joints, planes of motion, nervous system, functional movement and breath, in order to work with athletes safely.

Harnessing power for performance is energetic, mental and physical. Yoga helps to build the container and open the “gateways”, allowing each athlete to the ability to access their individual power!

Christine Schwan, M.S., E-RYT200, has been involved in health & fitness her entire life, having been a certified aerobics instructor for over 30 years, as well as a national and state aerobic and fitness champion.

After life changes brought her to the sacred space of single motherhood with 2 small boys, Christine began practicing yoga as a way to find more balance in her life, physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally. She fell in love with the practice of yoga then went on to receive her Yoga Teaching certification through The Jimmy Barkan Method of Hot Yoga in the summer of 2008, and continues yearly workshops for his Level II/III Advanced Vinyasa Flow certification.

Driven by her passion for health and fitness, as well as being a lifelong athlete, Christine received additional training and certification for Yoga Sports Performance and Yoga for Golfers.

As an adjunct professor of Anatomy & Physiology, she brings her extensive knowledge of the human body, as well as kinesiology and the biomechanics of the muscular system, to create classes that focus on correct alignment paired with educating clients on the proper mechanics involved for each asana.

Christine offers private yoga/coaching sessions, specializing in corrective alignment, sports specific yoga & rehabilitation with students & athletes of all levels, including professional athletes from the NFL, NBA and MLB.
