Three separate areas in Richmond Lake Recreation Area cater to the needs of campers, swimmers, naturalists, boaters and anglers. Campers stay in the South Unit, while the 200-acre Forest Drive Unit is a great place for wildlife viewing. The Boat Ramp Unit provides access to the more than 1,000-acre lake. Nestled along the wooded shores of Mina Lake, Mina Recreation Area is a water-lover's haven with plenty of room for boating, fishing and swimming. When you leave the water, a spacious campground, hiking trail, and several picnic areas provide hours of family fun.

Our park visitors all had a blast at our Amazing Nature Race events! We solved word scrambles, word searches, and riddles all over the park to find our next clues, made our way through the obstacle course, and finally, played Guess-the-Fur and North American Furbearing Mammals Jeopardy, all to win South Dakota State Park t-shirts and a few extra special prizes donated by local businesses! Thank you to the following Aberdeen businesses for your generous donations!

A great big THANK YOU needs to go out to the Richmond Lake Association for the fishing pier that was donated to GFP! The location in the park has provided the campers and day users with a beautiful opportunity for some quality fishing. The folks there this morning were to shy to get their picture taken, but it has been getting used and enjoyed!
We had a good turnout for the Richmond Rumble Disc Golf Tournament this morning. Thank you to the AADGA for being such great partners with the park! We've gotten some nice improvements made over the last 4 years and it's showing with higher numbers coming to the tournaments.

We had a wonderful time making it through five rounds of challenges at the Amazing Nature Race events this past 4th of July weekend! Campers and visitors at both lakes competed to win prizes from our wonderful sponsors! [06/18/15] ATTENTION: Both the Trapping and Furs and the Dutch Oven Cookout events at Mina Lake this weekend are being moved. They will no longer be at the Picnic Shelter, and will instead be held in the Youth Group Campground! The locations in the post summaries for these events have been altered, as well.
We're all set up for Feature Creature: Buffalo, going on at Mina Lake Picnic Shelter today at 1 pm and Richmond Lake Picnic Shelter tomorrow at 10 am! Come learn about the history of the South Dakota buffalo! Look at real bones, furs, and tools made from this magnificent animal!

The Junior Naturalist Program is an excellent opportunity for youth 7-18 years of age to explore South Dakota State Parks and learn about the rich natural and cultural history of South Dakota.
As a Junior Naturalist you will:
-Explore nature and the history of South Dakota.
-Gain knowledge to share with others.
-Protect the valuable resources in the state.
-Be physically active in the outdoors.
There are 3 levels in the Junior Naturalist Program.
Level 1: Attend 5 Game, Fish, and Parks programs and do 3 healthy recreational activities.
Prize: Earn a Junior Naturalist badge.
Level 2: Attend 5 additional Game, Fish, and Parks programs and do 3 additional healthy recreational activities.
Prize: Earn a Game, Fish, and Parks sleeping bag.
Level 3: Create a nature program and present it to the public.
Prize: Earn a choice of snow shoes, a fishing pole and tackle box, a disc golf set, OR binoculars.

We had a lot of fun learning about birds and making our own feeders at Mina Lake this past weekend!
Mina Lake Rec Area had a ribbon cutting on Saturday, May 23rd to kick off the new Track Trail program on the Shake Maza trail in the park. The South Dakota State Parks partnered with the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation to open 7 new track trails in our state park system. 4 new brochures can be found at the trailhead to help you explore different aspects of the trail. Even if you couldn't make it for the ribbon cutting, we hope you'll check it out this summer and fall!
Join us for a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Track Trails at Mina Lake Recreation Area! We will meet at the trailhead closest to the boat ramp at 11:00 a.m. CT on Saturday, May 23rd. Following the ribbon cutting, we will hike the 3/4 mile trail and explore what all it has to offer. This is 1 of 7 Track Trails opening in the South Dakota State Parks on Saturday.
[05/18/15] Elm Lake is over-full! There has been a lot of rain in the Elm Lake basin and we started getting reports of the dock under water on Friday. The south boat dock was pulled back late Friday afternoon and should be accessible. Just got word that the dock at the Elm Lake Resort is also underwater now. We will work with the new owners on getting that usable as quick as we can.
There are plenty of campsites still available for this weekend. Don't let the rain scare you off, come on out and camp! Mina Lake has 6 electric sites available and Richmond Lake has 2 non-electric and 10 electric sites available.
Both Mina Lake and Richmond Lake are full for Memorial Day Weekend.
Open House Weekend is coming! May 15th - 17th is our annual open house for South Dakota Game, Fish, & Parks. There is free entrance at all state parks and free fishing (no fishing license needed) on all bodies of water in South Dakota. The 2014 Annual License expires on Monday, May 18th. Pick up your 2015 at any state park, the Aberdeen Wildlife office, Ken's or Kesslers.
[05/08/15] For those that like to boat on N. Scatterwood Lake, the metal that was popping tires was pulled out from the ramp this week, but it was determined that the dock was not safe for use. We are working on getting a replacement, which should be about the middle of June. We apologize for the inconvenience but want to keep you and your equipment unharmed.
