All of the paddles that I carve are 100% original design and hand sculpted. I use entirely recycled and found material. When you see these pieces hanging on a wall or cruising by on the river you should be thinking; ‘broken pallets from Timbuktu, torn up flooring, packing crates, old boat decking, and other “junk”. If you end up with one of these paddles you should know that nobody went out and cut down a tree just to make it. They cut down a tree to build furniture, took the scrap wood and built a pallet, lugged junk around the world on the pallet till it broke, then finally I hauled it home and helped it become the art-piece that it really wanted to be all along ;) You’ll surely notice that the wood in these art pieces comes with some serious character as well as a few scares. I tend to quarter saw lots of the wood I use and pick out funky nail holes, interesting knots, and strange grain patterns to showcase things that excite me about this medium.
Though they may be pretty and look nice on the wall or in the corner, these are water pushers. I made my first paddles because I wanted to use them. This continues with every one that I lovingly coax out of the scraps I’ve gathered in my shop. Now I would not, however, recommend that my paddles be your choice for a sprint race or your double overhead suicide run. They are cruisers. Each one has its own characteristics of flex and flow. Different handles feel good in different hands and you should take some time to get acquainted with your new piece. I love to think that my art can help people get even more in touch with the water they play in. They are meant to “paddle”, not “battle”.
The paddles I shape happened almost by accident. I have a deep love and respect for the water and have surfed for years in the Pacific Northwest. During a somewhat "swell-light" trip to Oahu I determined that I had a "need" for a stand-up board to get wet on during flat spells here at home. Upon returning home I decided it'd be even more fun (and affordable) to build my own S.U.P. So I promptly set about constructing a Simple hollow paddleboard. I was so excited when I finished it and immediately realized that it was missing something. Finding a serious lack of stand-up paddles for a 6'3" guy in little Aberdeen.
I am not a particularly patient guy when I get my stoke up about something and I needed to get my new board in the water NOW! "Well heck", I thought, "I just made a hollow wood board; paddle is cake". .... There was a very ugly paddle born that day. I didn't even urethane it, but it did get me in the water. That night I began work on a "real paddle" it was as much fun as working on the board and turned out so much prettier that I thought "Geez, if I do another it'll be like perfect." By my fifth or sixth creation, When my fiancé asked “What are you going to do with all of these?”, I knew I wasn't going to stop. I start each of these with no design or pre-planned pattern, I pick up a piece of wood that speaks to me and just start finding the bits that it calls to itself. I get so much joy and piece from playing with these and I truly hope that you enjoy them as well. If one ends up home with you then you also have a little piece of me. There is very happy energy in there. Spread it around…..with Broad Strokes.
