I often hear patients say a good workout relieves excess stress. That’s because exercise reduces cortisol – the stress hormone. ⠀

Too much cortisol and you become insulin resistant and store belly fat. Too much cortisol also makes you crave sugar and carbs and seek comfort food.⠀

Let’s consider some of the other reasons why exercise is important: ⠀

BETTER INSULIN SENSITIVITY: Exercise makes your cells and muscles more sensitive to insulin so you don’t need as much. Less insulin means less belly fat.⠀

LESS STRESS: I often hear patients say a good workout relieves excess stress. That’s because exercise reduces cortisol – the stress hormone. Too much cortisol and you become insulin resistant and store belly fat. Too much cortisol also makes you crave sugar and carbs and seek comfort food.⠀

BETTER BRAIN HEALTH: Your brain on exercise performs so much better. Exercise improves memory, learning, and concentration. Vigorous exercise is a better antidepressant than Prozac. Exercise creates brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDMF), which is basically miracle grow for your brain. When you exercise, your brain becomes more elastic. Exercise also helps to improve your mood, boost your energy, and reduce overall stress in your body and mind.⠀

REDUCED RISK FOR CHRONIC DISEASE: Exercise does this through several mechanisms. It protects your heart and reduces your risk of heart attack and stroke. It reduces inflammation (the cause of almost every disease of aging). And it balances hormones, therefore reducing breast and other common cancers.⠀

ENHANCED DETOXIFICATION: Intense exercise allows your body to release toxins through your skin. It boosts detoxification of environmental chemicals. Vigorous exercise will help you work up a sweat, but gentle exercise keeps your circulation going and flushes out all the toxic fluids that build up in your lymphatic system. ⠀

IMPROVED SEXUAL FUNCTION: Increased circulation and more energy are two of many reasons that consistent exercise can spark up your sex life.⠀

I love Sundays because they’re like the end of one chapter... and with an open mind, the next chapter has infinite potential. Now is the perfect time to set intentions + sublime opportunity to begin again.
A friendly reminder because we, as humans, so easily forget. Anything worth having is worth putting in the effort. When we seek change we know it doesn’t happen over night; this can be dispiriting.

We don’t go to the gym once and expect a ripped body the next day. We don’t meditate once and expect to free ourselves from the slavery of our minds overnight. We don’t go to one yoga class and expect for that magic to return the next day.

Change takes tenacity, practice, repetition, patience.
Put in the work. Never give up.

HapiKids Yoga Camp✨’tis off to a great start. Yesterday we got to know one another. Today. . . we talked about bullying. Everyone but the preschoolers raised their hands when asked if they’ve ever been a victim of bullying. Then we all had an opportunity to express our feelings. One kid broke into tears. . . I felt his pain. I’ve been there. The pain is unbearable. Talk to your children. Teach them empathy & compassion, resilience & strength. Love them extra hard. Never let them go. ✨

E A R T H D A Y 🌍 is actually one of my favorite holidays. My hope is that we can treat every day with as much attention for our Mother Earth as we do on this day.

It’s always a wake up call being around people who do not hold the same practices in effort to take care of our planet. While there are many out there who may never really care enough to do so, I think mostly it comes down to awareness & mindfulness. Most of us were never really taught how to be conservative in order to reduce our footprint, rather we learned that the person with the most stuff wins. We live in a world of excess. Excess food, excess plastic, excess convenience, excessive technology, materialism.

It can be so overwhelming some of us may give up altogether. But the rest of us will continue to devote our time and energy to make our planet a better, cleaner, more sustainable place to live for our future generations.
