Trail Days Auction Provides Vital Funding for Historic Damascus Hostel The Trail Days auction has become one of the most popular events at Trail Days, as bidders look forward to great bargains on top quality merchandise and vacation packages. This year’s Live Auction will take place on Saturday, May 18 at 3 p.m. in Damascus Town Park, and all proceeds benefit The Place, one of the town’s oldest and most historic hiker hostels and the oldest hostel on the Appalachian Trail. Owned by the First United Methodist Church of Damascus, The Place has been in operation since 1975, providing a warm, safe, and welcoming atmosphere for long distance Appalachian Trail hikers and Trans-America cyclists. The residence features downstairs and upstairs bunks which sleep 30, a kitchen with microwaves and coffee maker. There are poles for hammocks outside, a large lawn for tenting, and pavilion with picnic tables. “It is likely we would have had to close down The Place without the financial support of this Auction,” says Tom Hayes, former Trail Days Director and Damascus Methodist Church representative. “It has helped the church make repairs to the hostel, including fixing the roof, and paying the electric and water bills.” Auctions started in 2001, then in 2008 Damascus Realty & Auctions assumed the responsibility of the Trail Days Auction. “We saw the importance of having the Auction be even more successful as the operating and repair costs of the Methodist Church were increasing and the hostel provided a very important amenity for the hiking community,” says Russell McBride, former owner of Damascus Realty & Auctions. “Since 2008, the annual Auction has raised over $20,000 in total proceeds.” The current owner of Damascus Realty, Sam Blevins now sponsors the auction. In 2012, Trail Days Chairman, Tim Williams, established an auction committee within the Trail Days committee with members working throughout the year, requesting local merchants to provide housing packages, gift certificates, equipment, and gear. Trail Days vendors at Town Park and campground donate merchandise, hiking gear, and supplies. When combined with local support from area bike shops, gear shops, bed and breakfast inns, restaurants, Barter Theater passes, and more, 25 to 30 packages are created worth hundreds of dollars. The live Trail Days Auction will begin at 3:00p.m. on Saturday, May 18. Craft vendors, corporate vendors, retail vendors and local merchants have been generous to the Auction, donating high quality items along with their financial support for The Place. For more information and/or to make donations contact The Place Caretaker, Roy "Bayou" Knight, at [email protected] or (504) 343-3734. Donations can also be brought to the Damascus Reality trailer on Friday, or Saturday by noon.
