Iโ€™m not sure how much appreciation this will get here, but I came across this really inspirational story and thought that some of you guys might appreciate it as much as I did. A 14.3 mile mountain climb with a buddy on your back almost kind of makes the burpee mile look like a game of hopscotch...
Salt Shack CrossFit is thrilled to host its first Shack Up Throwdown Competition. It is a 2-person, co-ed, team competition. Scaled and an RX Competition will both go on Saturday June 22, 2019 from 8:00am to 4:00pm. All teams are guaranteed at four workouts

We hope to inspire more folks out there, by demonstrating how we will handle this crisis...

Because COVID-19 is really no different than any other situation in life. Everything in life comes down to only two questions:

Contrary to popular belief, we're not all just doing high rep olympic weightlifting, kipping pull-ups, thrusters and, burpees all day. We're not out here tearing labrums and giving people Rhabdo.

Here, at Work/Play, we work our asses off to help our clients get healthier, stronger and fitter. We don't care what anyone tells us is or isn't CrossFit. When we find an exercise we think will help our members get what they want out of their strength and conditioning journey, we'll do it.

Do you really think CrossFit is dangerous, or do you think that's a line someone fed you who'd already given up on fulfilling their potential, and wanted a convenient excuse to do nothing?

FAMOUS TIMES where had! Good to see the Work/Play Fam out laughing and smiling and socializing last night! We should do this more often!
AND then to see the Neon Green Palace packed full of energy and people...many of the same this morning, was similarly awesome!
Just what the doctor ordered!
Thereโ€™s been a lot of changes this year, and such is life.... The only thing that never changes is that everything is always changing!
But ultimately, as long as we keep the chain of connection
from the roots of our community back in 2014 through until the present moment, OUR Community Spirit can remain as something unchanging and reliable and dependable in an otherwise chaotic and ever changing world.
Yes, the people gradually change, but the idea of a Third Place, that is not your work or your home...but that feels like home, and gives warmth and comfort and the sensation of belonging, of family, of being a part of something great....
THAT endures, that can and will stand the test if time if we nurture it, nurture each other!
So thanks Fam, for nurturing me a bit this weekend, and this year!
Weโ€™ve been tested, but thatโ€™s why we strength train. Life is not like school. In school you study lessons then you take a test. In life you get tested, and then you learn your lessons...
But if all this testing snd learning wasnโ€™t happening, we wouldnโ€™t grow, evolve, improve, or get better!

You may have noticed the post workout โ€œnapโ€ videos this morning. Here is Coach Robo with a brief explanation behind why.
What you need to know:
* Within your nervous system you have two different pathways that regulate bodily functions such as heart rate, blood pressure and recovery to name just a few. The Parasympathetic system and the Sympathetic nervous system.
* The Parasympathetic system is responsible for down regulating the body and is where rest, digestion and recovery can take place. Here you will have a low heart rate/ventilation rate and will generally be in a relaxed state. This state is where we want to be for optimal recovery from the physical and metabolic stress placed on the body during training.
* The Sympathetic system stimulates the bodies fight or flight capabilities. This is the state you are in during an intense bout of exercise. In an elevated sympathetic state you can expect a higher heart rate, likely a higher breath rate and a nervous system primed and ready to signal skeletal muscle to contract
๐Ÿ’กDuring training we put our bodies through a ton of mechanical and metabolic stress. This leaves us in an elevated Sympathetic state post workout. This can last for hours after training and hinder our bodies ability to heal. We can mitigate this by stimulating our Parasympathetic nervous system with a simple breathing protocol to bring us back to baseline prior to training.
How to do it:
Immediately following an intense training session, simply find a bench and lay down with your hips and knees at a 90 degrees angle. From there spend roughly 5 minutes on focused breathing and intentional relaxation. All you need to do it close your eyes, breath in deep filling your belly and then your chest. Finish off with an exhale that is longer than your inhale. Again, focus only on your deep breathing and settling down your heart rate. Hope this helps you guys to understand the why behind those post workout โ€œnapsโ€ ๐ŸคŸ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’š
