There is a common misconception that a pregnant woman should never be flat on her back, ever. Here, we explore how prolonged periods of lying flat on the back can put pressure on the inferior vena cava and abdominal aorta if the baby and/or placenta is heavy enough and right on top of the spine. However, we also learn the signs to tell if blood flow is impeded and explore the difference of short vs. long poses and when it may be safe to lie flat or appropriate to use modifications.

How To Plan for Postpartum, with Amanda Hemm

We are coming to you LIVE with Postpartum Doula, Amanda Hemm to discuss life in the 4th trimester!

As I sit and reflect on my own privilege, these poignant points are a reminder that as a white birthing mother in the US I had privileges and choices not extended to my BIPOC counterparts. In yoga we explore and sit with our authentic selves with the hope that through that exploration we can reflect our hearts back to our community. This is often described as peace. But the path to peace is rarely peaceful. Peace for the sake of peace is not peace at all. It is complacency. To find true peace we must dig deeper. There is often violence. There is often rage. There are often tears and fire that pave the way for a new structures without systemic oppression. Where we *all* can bring our authentic selves and honor each other for it. Sometimes we need to tear down walls to build bridges.

I implore all of my white yogis to sit with your privilege and use that privilege to change. Change yourself. Change your community. Be unapologetically anti-racist.

This is so important to think and talk about. We need to be aware and open about the privilege we walk around with each and every day. Every mother walks a different path. Thank you to the families that joined this morning for our coffee chat conversation. 🚼🚼

Live Replay: Balancing Through Spring

This is a higher quality upload of the Facebook Live stream I did for class last week, when Zoom was experiencing outages. We focused on balance in the body, mind and emotions. I recommend setting up to practice this near a wall if you choose to use wall variations for balance.

Suggested Props: two bolsters or thick pillows, a thin blanket or towel, a thick blanket, two yoga blocks and a strap or belt.

Please note that these prenatal yoga classes are designed for healthy Moms in any stage of pregnancy. If you are experiencing health issues or pregnancy complications please check with your Doctor or Midwife before starting a new exercise routine.
