http://www.doshikai.net Doshi-Kai (meaning “the group pursuing the way”) was founded by Master Nagao Matsuyama, in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1984.
The atmosphere at Doshi-Kai is unique—serious and focused, but friendly and not militaristic. In this setting, you can really feel the difference between “commercial” martial arts and the rare traditional non-profit groups where the “art” is more important than the promotion, the technique more valued than the belt, and the individual progress is not measured by how much you’ve paid out, but by how hard you work on yourself.
Mission: DoShiKai is a traditional Japanese Shotokan dojo.
Operating as usual
A friendly reminder that they’re are NO youth classes tonight. Enjoy this beautiful weather - it’s a great time to practice your kata outside!

Did you hear?! We're back! 🎉(And socially distant!) Our youth program returned to the dojo last week with newly added sanitization, health and safety measures in place. It was so wonderful to see our student's faces again after three months of Zoom classes! 🥋
Thank you to our Doshi-Kai family for sticking and kicking with us during these times - we truly appreciate you all!
Multiple classes a week, tournaments, competitions, and at-home training… Thank you to all our Martial Arts dads for always being there to support and encourage your child. 🙌🏽

“Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy, forget in time that men have died to win them.” - F.D.R. #MemorialDay2020 🇺🇸
We love seeing our students training outside the dojo! Shoutout to Mason and Eliza for putting in the extra time yesterday. Have YOU been getting your kata practice in too? Show us!
A mother is she who can take the place of all others, but whose place no others can take. We love our Martial Arts moms! Thank you for all that you have done for your child to continue training virtually. 💗 #HappyMothersDay

Kids challenge #3
Last night, despite the dojo being temporarily closed, classes continued! We had a blast running our first ever virtual youth classes and it was so wonderful getting to see and chat with our students. See you all Wednesday and keep training hard!
Dear Parents, Students and Members,
There has been a significant shift in the coronavirus outbreak since our communication a few days ago.
Today, Gov. Charlie Baker has placed a ban on gatherings of over 25 people and school closures across the state. Therefore, Doshi-Kai has decided to take proactive measures to help slow the spread of the virus by suspending all classes at the Dojo.
We will continue to monitor the outbreak and keep you informed as much as we can.
To help offset the time away for our youth students, we are working on videos and online study material. This way students can continue to practice at home while they are unable to attend classes at the dojo.
We are doing our best to ensure that this time away from the dojo will have as little impact as possible on our student’s ability to test for their next rank. More details will follow very soon.
Thank you again for being a valued member of the Doshi-Kai community.
From all of us here at Doshi-Kai, happy Valentine's Day 💕
Taijutsu at tonight's Adult Class, 2/11/20
It's Bo night at tomorrow's Adult Class. 7-9pm.
A big day today for many of our youth program students - testing day! Congratulations to our newest third kyu brown belts Yuzuki and Krish, our new second kyu brown belts Luc and Nathan, first kyu browns Shreya and Sofia, and last but certainly not least, a massive congratulations to our newest junior black belt Hrydia! Well done all, your Senseis and your dojo are very proud of you!
Our students had a great time at the annual IPPONE Kick-Off Tournament and Banquet and we couldn’t be more proud at how well they competed in some fierce divisions. Well done everyone, and let’s have a great season!
The value of tournaments lies far beyond winning a trophy medal. It's one of the best ways for a student to set goals, learn the value of tenacity, and - as the article states - even learn a bit about empathy along the way.
Doshi-Kai will be sending a group of students to compete at tomorrow's IPPONE Kick Off Tournament at the Boxboro Regency Hotel - come cheer them on!

The new Doshi-kai fliers are in! We need your help hanging them up and spreading them around town. You can share on FB with friends. You can download and print copies. Better still, come for a class and pick up a few fliers!
[01/03/20] Great class last night with Gregory Cumings Andrea Tondo Marcelo Viera Katie Jordan and Hon Yee. Greg spiced it up with flying back kicks (I'm still dizzy) and Sochin (my quads are still burning). Tons of fun was had by all.
January 4th Special New Year's Class! Barry Poitras writes:
"We would like to invite you to our New Year’s event Kagami-biraki on Saturday January 4, 2020 from 10:00am to Noon, at the Acton Dojo. The literal translation to Kagami-biraki is “opening a mirror”, suggesting that one reflect on their training of the year that just ended, as well as looking ahead in the new year. The class will consist of two “keiko hajime” (first-practice) sessions for 2020.
The first session will be on center power and distribution of power from basics to kata.
The second session will focus on forearm strengthening techniques at Not Your Average Joe’s down the street at the end of the first session.
All are welcome. I will be conducting the class since Matsuyama Sensei will be in Japan. Hope you can join us to welcome in New Year with some good training followed be festive karate stories of the past."

Practicing karate doesn’t have to just be in the dojo, it can be anywhere! This includes Northern Ireland where our students Mason and Eliza just returned from. (We’re not sure how the cannon lift went, but we respect the effort 😉)
[11/28/19] From all of us at Doshi-Kai we wish you and your family a very happy Thanksgiving!
Doshi-Kai advanced training with Matsuyama Sensei on Saturday (Nov 16) included Tai-jutsu pinning and throwing techniques against grabbing (katate dori and kata dori) and punching attacks (oi-zuki, mai-te gyaku-zuki, and mai-te).
