Prescription: More Broccoli, Fewer Carbs. How Some Doctors Are Looking To Food To Treat Illness

“Three studies published in the last few weeks show the range of new research connecting food to health. In the journal Science, researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center conclude that a molecule in vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and kale really may fight cancer. It seems to help reactivate a gene that suppresses many tumors.”

wbur.org A McLean Hospital doctor asks patients with obesity and mental illness to try the ketogenic diet. It's part of a growing trend of doctors prescribing certain foods -- or telling patients to eliminate them -- to improve health.

What happens when you work hard and have a community to hold you accountable?

Over the course of our May nutrition challenge, Heather lost 9 lbs and 8 inches. Way to go Heather!

What attracted you to CrossFit Reach?
It was just after I had my third son and my dad said to me that he wanted to try CrossFit. Wanting to get back into some form of exercise I said that I would try too; however being a former gymnast and soccer player this was so out of my comfort zone! My parents live in Newton and I didn't want to drive that far so his box recommended Reach :) The CrossFit community was like nothing I had ever experienced as an athlete and after a week I was completely hooked.

What is your least favorite CrossFit movement? Anything Assault Bike!

Which classes during the week would someone most likely see you at? I love my 6:30AM crew! But when my husband travels the 9:30AM class is my second home!

What is your favorite CrossFit moment so far? Getting 6 bar muscle ups in the Open was pretty amazing, but now it would have to be completing Murph this past Memorial Day with a vest

What type of music do you enjoy working out to? I like the eclectic music selection of our coaches but when Dan sings Britney or Taylor Swift that pretty much makes the workout

Name a favorite movie and why
Oh man just one? I have quite the range of movies that I like... Pretty Woman and Top Gun are just classics! Pitch Perfect and Magic Mike are guilty pleasures. Gran Torino because Clint Eastwood is amazing...

Where is your favorite vacation destination? Hawaii is awesome! My husband and I have been there a few times and I cant wait to take my older two boys next year.

What do you do for work? I have worked for Tufts Medical Center, Infectious Diseases for 13 years. Almost 10 years ago, one of the doctor's and I started our OPAT (Outpatient Antibiotic Therapy) program and I have been able to be the Program Coordinator from home for the last 8 years.

What would be your dream job? I am very lucky with the job that I have because I can do the entire thing from home which allows me to do "mom things" with my kids like help out at school or go on field trips, gymnastics class with my two littles, etc.

What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream? All of them but if I have to pick one probably Coffee Heath Bar.

What are your hobbies outside of the gym? 4 kids doesn't really allow for much else but I love to cook! We have a house in VT so skiing, hiking, kayaking are some of my favorite things.

Where did you grow up? I was born in Dallas, TX but grew up in Newton, MA.

What is one piece of advice that you would give to someone who is thinking about joining CrossFit Reach? Just try it. Don't worry about whether or not you can Rx the workout, how fast you can run or how strong you are. No one is judging you other than you and once you let go of that fear you will realize what an incredible and supportive community you have cheering for you and your accomplishments

👏

CrossFit Reach was proud to host Carl Paoli for his Muscle Up Master Class. Lots of laughter, learning and movement on this fine Saturday morning. If you have an opportunity to learn from Carl we highly recommend it. He is one of the best! FreestyleConnection

✊ May Athlete Spotlight is Mike Van Horn✊

What attracted you to CrossFit Reach?
The free FitAid RX and leftover Reach apparel. Do I have to bring back that PVC pipe?

What is your least favorite CrossFit movement?
I understand why we do most movements I don't enjoy which makes me want to get even better at them. DU is not one of those movements.

Which classes during the week would someone most likely see you at?
I like OGs, I hit up 1030am for OG and then the nooner most days. Sprinkle in some 6'ers and weekends.

What is your favorite CrossFit moment so far?
PRs will come but it's when I started RXing workouts on the regular. Also, being better than Grady at everything.

What type of music do you enjoy working out to?
Whatever Jimbo has playing works; hard, aggressive, motivating. Sorry, I can't do country (Don't tell coach Katie).

Name a favorite movie and why?
"You're gonna need a bigger boat."

Where is your favorite vacation destination?
I feel very fortunate to live in NE because it has all of my favorites places to get away. VT, ME, NH, all beautiful. Anywhere you don't have to get on a plane and can get home in less than a 3-4 hour drive, sign me up. OGT!

What do you do for work?
Sales. I've been in the food & beverage, hospitality, and events industries my whole life.

What would be your dream job?
Rescuing animals comes to mind immediately.

What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Vanilla Bourbon. New City Microcreamery. Hudson. You're welcome.

What are your hobbies outside of the gym?
Hiking is a great way to switch it up from the box, you have to get outside. I'm a super foodie so definitely cooking. I love watching sports too.

Where did you grow up?
Jackson, New Jersey -> Stratton, Vermont.

What is one piece of advice that you would give to someone who is thinking about joining CrossFit Reach?
Trust the process. As a very wise and amazing coach named Jen once told me, "Don't be afraid to fail." Those words resonate every day I walk into the building. Just show up and do YOUR workout. They're YOUR goals. Own them. The rest will come so be patient and keep coming to class.

Raw and Red-Hot

We talked about this a bit yesterday at the seminar. There is a lot to take in in this article but in general this is why diet matters. Being overweight is an indication of other issues. We strive to train function (reduce that inflammation) and form (health, weight etc) will follow.

"In medicine, believing something is true is not the same as being able to prove it. Because the idea that inflammation—constant, low-level, immune-system activation —could be at the root of many noncommunicable diseases is a startling claim, it requires extraordinary proof. Can seemingly unconnected illnesses of the brain, the vasculature, lungs, liver, and joints really share a deep biological link? Evidence has been mounting that these common chronic conditions—including Alzheimer’s, cancer, arthritis, asthma, gout, psoriasis, anemia, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and depression among them—are indeed triggered by low-grade, long-term inflammation. But it took that large-scale human clinical trial to dispel any lingering doubt: the immune system’s inflammatory response is killing people by degrees."

Does your doctor even lift?

It doesn’t really matter how much, it just matters that they understand why it’s important.

It is important to our coaches that we are able to help you execute functional movement without pain, and with these guys in our corner we can make sure that you do just that.

I highly recommend these guys.

Does your Physical Therapist speak your language?

Does your Physical Therapist know the terms snatch, WOD, AMRAP, front rack, muscle up? Do they look at you funny when you say you were sore after doing 80 kipping pullups in a WOD? If your Physical Therapist is not familiar with CrossFit moves or lingo they may not fully understand what they are rehabbing you for and they may be missing a big part of getting you back to full CrossFit function. Make sure you ask whether the PT facility you are referred to has someone on staff that is familiar with CrossFit. Also ask if you will see the same therapist for each visit and whether the clinic uses Aides or Assistants. All of these are important questions when choosing a therapist and the answers can affect how fast and how fully you will recover from an injury

At Achieve PT you will see the same therapist for every visit and we take the time to get to know you and your sport. In fact, our whole staff went to learn about CrossFit and crushed a WOD together last month! We have someone on staff at each of our three clinics who knows CrossFit. Contact us to schedule an appointment.

✊Athlete Spotlight for April is Diane Davey!✊

What attracted you to CrossFit Reach?

I had been doing a different boot camp, and some of my friends were doing Robby’s. Just after it switched over to CrossFit I joined, despite my initial anxiety!

What is your least favorite CrossFit movement?

Handstand Push-Ups. I cannot get over my fear of them.

Which classes during the week would someone most likely see you at?

I almost exclusively attend 5:30am, which is why most people reading this are wondering who the heck I am.

What is your favorite CrossFit moment so far?

Most of my favorite moments are seeing friends achieve something great. I really enjoy the camaraderie of the gym and love seeing people achieve their goals. This past year has been great for me as well, as I’ve been able to do movements (TTB, DU’s, PU’s) that I’ve never been able to do in the past…lots of firsts. It’s never too late!!

What type of music do you enjoy working out to?

Normally I would say that Dan’s playlists are my favorites, but I missed Jim so much when he left that now that he’s back, I am even enjoying his music!!

Name a favorite movie and why

It’s hard to pick just one, but an all-time favorite is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. For some reason, that movie has always been a favorite…I love the idea of friends that are always with you.

Where is your favorite vacation destination?

My parents have had a home in Quechee, VT for many years. It’s a great spot and I never get tired of going. It’s instantly relaxing.

What do you do for work?

I direct a treatment and research program for people with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder at McLean Hospital. Anyone need my card?

What would be your dream job?

My job is pretty perfect, but I’d like to work a little less!!

What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?

It would be easier to think of ice cream flavors I don’t like

What are your hobbies outside of the gym?

I like to run and read and spend time with my family. Most of my free time is spent watching my kids play sports.

Where did you grow up?

Simsbury, CT…outside of Hartford, for those not up on their CT geography

What is one piece of advice that you would give to someone who is thinking about joining CrossFit Reach?

Bring friends or make friends. The gym often serves as my social life, so seeing my friends there is what gets me up at 4:45am (and coffee).

👏

✊ March Athlete Spotlight is Jessica Hoey ✊

What attracted you to CrossFit Reach?
I started at Robby’s bootcamp with a Groupon in 2012 on a whim. Around that time he was in the process of switching over to CrossFit and I decided to give it a try. I liked that it was challenging and the workouts were planned out for me and included a lot of variety. I also liked the class format because it held me accountable and pushed me to want to get better.

What is your least favorite CrossFit movement?
The Assault bike 🤮

Which classes during the week would someone most likely see you at?
I used to attend the 5 o’clock pretty religiously. Now you’ll most likely see me squeezing in a workout before the 5 so I can pick my son up at daycare.

What is your favorite CrossFit moment so far?
PRs and "firsts" stick out as exciting moments for me of course, both getting my own and watching others get theirs. But, I think overall my favorite CrossFit memories are associated with all the great people I’ve met at Reach.

What type of music do you enjoy working out to?
To be honest I tend to block out the music when I’m working out. Anything that is upbeat and covers up my heavy breathing works!

Name a favorite movie and why
This is SO hard. I really don't know what my favorite would be, but I do like The Sandlot because it's fun and reminds me of my childhood.

Where is your favorite vacation destination?
We enjoy going to Maine every summer. Outside of New England, I'd say Hawaii (so far).

What do you do for work?
I teach first grade in Bedford, MA

What would be your dream job?
Probably something where I could work with children’s literature

What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Chocolate almond

What are your hobbies outside of the gym?
I read a lot and enjoy cooking.

Where did you grow up?
North Reading, MA

What is one piece of advice that you would give to someone who is thinking about joining CrossFit Reach?
Similar to what others have said in the past, the best advice I could give would be to just leave any preconceived notions about CrossFit at the door and come and give it a try. Show up at least 3 times a week (if possible) if you want to see results, and don’t shy away from chatting with the people you meet in class because they are pretty awesome!
