Boy Scout Troop 586

Boy Scout Troop 586

Any chance the boy scouts that are bored at home would like to zoom or google meet to chat with the kiddos that are now boy scouts start their at home merit badges? I don't know, maybe this isn't even allowed but i figured it would give the kids something to look forward to besides the parents that they have been stuck with for a while. (my child's dad works on the road and due to social distancing the male figures aka grandpas or uncles are busy). Tyson for example last night just set out his tarps to kill the grass where he would like to put his garden for the summer so he will be working on soil and water conservation first. Should this not be allowed i give permission to delete this post altogether.

FROM NATIONAL at Boy Scouts of America. Please share to your units & parents so they are hearing directly from National & not from media sites that may be giving incorrect information. YouTube video from BSA is great as well & explains it well too (linked below).

"On February 18th, the national organization of the BSA filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to achieve two key objectives: equitably compensate victims who were harmed during their time in Scouting and continue to carry out Scouting’s mission for years to come.

Please know that Scouting programs will continue throughout this process and for many years to come.

This means you should continue to focus on furthering our movement through your invaluable commitment, just as you do each and every day.
Please use the resources in the comments, with focus on the infographic & FAQ.

586 families, you are learning about our National BSA organization filing bankruptcy this morning. This will allow BSA to better serve the past victims of abuse.

BSA has posted information on their website about this situation. It will answer many of your questions. If you have any additional questions, please let me know and I will do my best to answer your questions.

We can be very proud of the work we do every day to provide a fantastic, safe, fun and beneficial scouting program for our sons and daughters. Our national organization will emerge out of this bankruptcy filing and grow stronger because of it. Our Council and local scouting programs can be proud of what we do.

keep up the good work friends! - Jay The Boy Scouts of America believes our organization has a social and moral responsibility to equitably compensate all victims who were abused during their time in Scouting. We also have a duty to carry out our mission for years to come. In order to meet these dual objectives, the national organizati...

Here is an opportunity for anyone interested to help out the people of Australia suffering from the catastrophic Bush fires. It is recommended to order as a group to split the cost of shipping. I am interested in ordering a patch. It's not that I care that much about a patch, but I've been looking for a way to help through Australia andnif I can do it through Scouting, that is much better!!!! -Jay Matteson

This Bush Fire Appeal Badge (National Badge) is now in production and will be available through the online Scout Shop at a cost of $5 per badge shortly. $30,000 had been donated already to assist with production so that 100% of funds can go towards the fire appeal to support victims.

Purchase here:

The badge can be worn on the uniform where special even badges are worn. Please support this appeal and support those impacted by the devastating fires across Australia.

Tri-Rivers District

Once again, we see the loss of life of two teenagers within our District due to a motor vehicle accident. Even though they may not be involved in scouting, it breaks our hearts to see two young lives lost before they can spread their wings and experience life. Our hearts go out to our friends in the Indian River School District and anyone who may be touched by this sadness as they move through this tragic time. We pray that all may be warmed by our campfire and feel some comfort in it as they travel this difficult trail.

Scouters, I have a large supply of the USGS 7.5 series topographic maps that I will give away for free, as long as my supply lasts, at Scouting University this year. These are the common contour maps you can use with your scouts to teach map reading, contour lines, elevations etc. The maps are mostly centered on Jefferson County along with maps for areas bordering Jefferson County. Even if its not the map for your area, its still good to have one in your training kits when working with scouts on map reading and how to use a compass. These are free to anyone attending Scouting University. This is a one time opportunity. When they are gone, they are gone. I do ask that everyone be reasonable and take only what they absolutely need and will use. I should have enough for everyone who attends Scouting University, but as I said, when they are gone, they are gone. These maps were donated to me by the Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District to give to scout units for training purposes. I believe the maps would cost you $8 - $10 each depending upon where you buy them.

If you havent already, check out the course catalog for Scouting University. There are a lot of great courses and several are new! There is a wider selection for your scouts too! The catalog is available at

We hope to see you at Scouting University!

Scout Leaders - drawing your attention to two new courses offered at Scouting University this year - ELC 227 Scouting and Your Resume' and ELC 228 Public Speaking. Each course is two hours and is designed for older scouts in the 15 to 17 year old range.
ELC 227 will help scouts learn how to incorporate their scouting record into a resume. All too often, the accomplishments of scouting careers are left off from a resume. We will help scouts learn how to design a professional resume and how and where their scouting career fits on the resume. Depending upon class size, we will try to incorporate interview skills into the class. If scouts have a resume already prepared through school, please have them email their resume to the course instructor - Jay Matteson, at [email protected]. Please make sure they copy a parent or other scout leader when emailing, for youth protection purposes. Thank you.
ELC 228 will provide scouts a chance to enhance their public speaking skills. Scouts will be given guidance and tips to improve their public speaking skills. Each Scout will have an opportunity to speak in front of the class to practice their skills.

Please encourage your older scouts to sign up for these classes. There are m,any great classes offered through Scouting University this year! Check out the catalog and register today!!!

Opportunity and Scouting go hand in hand. This summer our Troop went to a total of five different summer camps totaling over 228 days worth of camping, areas of Washington DC, West Virginia, New Hampshire and Camp Woodland. That’s about 33 weeks of camp. This gives opportunities to meet new people, learn leadership skills and travel to different places.

Tonight we had our Court of Honor where we awarded five Rank Advancements, and over 75 Merit Badges handed out. Great job Scouts!
