Learning how to swim has multiple benefits beyond the ability to enjoy water safely. It helps children strive for physical achievement, promotes healthy living and builds their confidence. Remember these water safety tips to ensure a fun and safe summer:
-Never swim alone
-Supervise your children whenever they're in water
-Don't engage in breath holding activities
-Wear a life jacket
-Don't jump in the water to save a friend who is struggling in deep water
-Enroll your children in water safety or swim lessons

Water safety tip #3: Don’t engage in breath holding activities. Children shouldn’t hold their breath for a prolonged amount of time while swimming, as this can cause drowning and has several other severe physical side-effects. #NationalWaterSafetyMonth
The Y wants to ensure that no child misses out on swimming fun because they do not own or cannot afford a swimsuit. Donate new or gently used swimsuits to the Y during this month of May for those in need.
Happy Mother's Day!
Water safety tip #2: Always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone. Even at a public pool or a life-guarded beach, use the buddy system! #NationalWaterSafetyMonth

The Y chooses the best camp counselors to bring out the best in your children. In fact, many of them were YMCA campers themselves. Our counselors are called “Role Models” because not only do they show kids how to have fun and make friends, but they instill good character in them by modeling the Y values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Summer is the time for children to get up, get out, and grow. But for some kids, exposure to activities that stimulate the body and mind ends with the school year. Research shows that children gain weight twice as fast during the summer than the school year. One Healthy Kids Day tip to help prevent this is to High Five the Fruits and Veggies - Make sure children get at least five servings of fruits and veggies each day, the minimum number nutritionists recommend for healthy childhood development. And to keeps their taste buds evolving, have everyone in the family try at least one bite of a new fruit or vegetable at least once a month.
