Summit-Portage Football Officiating Class

Do you want to be a football official? You could be on the field this year, NO prerequisites needed! Classes start July 12th.

I am Brian Bednarczyk, and have been an OHSAA football official for 29 years. In conjunction with the Summit-Portage Football Officials Association and the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA), I am offering a football officiating class, that will be held at the Betty Jane Community Learning Center on 444 Darrow Rd., Akron. Seeing some of the usual strength teams but maybe some newcomers. As the weeks go on, we'll see.

[08/29/18]   2nd week of High School football in full swing. Most varsity matches Friday evening. Read your rule book. Call the fair game, no one gains an unfair advantage. Leave at the end with everyone healthy, including the officials.

[12/04/17]   A very busy weekend at the Pro Football HOF. 7 great games. A couple months off and then back at it.

[11/06/17]   1st round of Ohio High School football playoffs in the record books. Some expected wins but also some exciting upsets. 112 teams remain. Crew heading to Nordonia High School this week. Number 1 Hoban vs Number 4 Brush. Expecting a great game!

Ohio high school football is heating up! Playoff standings changing every week. Three weeks to go and then playoffs round 1. Finals back in Canton @ Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium (formerly Fawcett Stadium). All games there.

General information

The prospective sports official will receive classroom instruction on the playing rules and mechanics (where to stand, signals and where to look) of the sport. Class sessions will be dedicated to the relationship of the OHSAA and officials, how to deal with emotionally charged situations, how to get games, where to purchase uniforms and equipment, where to find a local officials association and all related information to provide each prospective official with an opportunity for success. Classroom learning will be reinforced through on-field scrimmage participation. The goal of each instructor is to provide every student with enough knowledge and proficiency to be successful at the entry level in sports officiating.
