In this post, learn how yoga is impacting veterans and about our Memorial Day event tomorrow June 2 on the USS Hornet in Alameda.

“Some words come to mind as I think about the positive effects yoga has had on my life --centered, balanced, breathing, being - being in the moment...being conscious and aware, not melancholy or depressed, but calm, hopeful and confident in how my day will unfold. Yoga has opened the door to a new way of life, to live in every moment.” - a Vietnam veteran who struggled with alcohol and depression and was diagnosed with PTSD.

Longer Exhalations Are an Easy Way to Hack Your Vagus Nerve

Anytime you want to hack your vagus nerve to reduce stress or improve decision-making, a simple self-talk script could be: "I'm stressing out. In order to calm down so I can perform better on this decision-making task, I'm going to take two minutes (right now!) to do ten rounds of vagus nerve breathing based on a 4:8 inhalation-to-exhalation ratio."

How Maine yoga studios are assisting with brain injury and PTSD recovery

Good morning Yogis,

Sharing a Veterans Yoga Project dispatch from the The Bangor Daily News in Maine!

Yoga can also aid those with PTSD who suffer from changes in their nervous system functioning, sleep difficulties, intrusive thoughts and severe emotional pain, including veterans.

Kasia Moffett is a yoga instructor at Om Land Yoga's Bangor location and teaches classes weekly on behalf of the Veterans Yoga Project. She took the organization’s Mindfulness Resilience Program, which in order to teach included an overview of military history, scientific information, languaging and the effects of service, especially PTSD, and other psychological injuries vets can suffer.

“It makes yoga more accessible to them. They have high standards to themselves. It’s off-putting if they don’t know what to do,” Moffett said. “It provides a space where veterans can feel more comfortable to know the basics.”

bangordailynews.com Yoga can benefit one’s mental state, including attention, memory, stress level and balance — all things that can be affected by traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder.

This isn't spa yoga: The Veterans Yoga Project | StoneArch

Good morning yogis!

A repost of a podcast about the power of yoga in the lives of veterans - featuring Daniel J Libby and Michael Millios.

"In the simple act of paying attention to the breath, and starting to remember this is a tool that we have, all of a sudden that opens the thought-behavior repertoire. 'I'm a little bit more relaxed and I can think a little more clearly and not focused on defense, escape, avoidance, retaliation, or that fight or flight response and my thoughts can be more creative.' "

...When people talk about yoga being about flexibility, it's about having cardiovascular flexibility, but it's also about behavioral flexibility, it's about having the flexibility to choose what you're going to do in this moment."

Wishing everyone a peaceful Sunday.

Study helps vets' caregivers handle stress

“There was a significant difference between mindfulness and the control group,” according to Sandraluz Lara-Cinisomo, assistant professor in the College of Applied Health Sciences’ Department of Kinesiology and Community Health at the U of I. “We saw improvement (lower levels) in stress, anxiety and worry in the mindfulness group. That’s what we were expecting.”

According to self-reports, those who received training improved their self-observing behaviors, were less judgmental and less reactive to things that bothered them, she said.

commercial-news.com DANVILLE — If you’re a caregiver for a veteran, a new study from the University of Illinois has some good news: Mindfulness techniques can help relieve stress.

Army veteran finds peace through yoga

Army veteran Michael Streeter says yoga isn't about the poses, but about the mind.

"It's about clearing the mind and being at peace during a challenging moment. That's what I teach in my class. When poses reach their challenging moments, you just breathe, and find peace in the pose in the breath," he said.

Finding inner peace was a process for Michael. It didn't happen overnight. Though no longer a ranger, he's found a new purpose in helping others find peace through yoga.

"Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."

You Can Be Depressed and Still be a Good Yoga Teacher

"There can be a real fear around showing vulnerability. I can be quite quiet about my mental health struggles because of this sense of dread that if people know they’ll think I’m not fit to do my job properly, not fit to hold space for others. But I’m starting to realise that my personal struggles with my mental health are exactly what make me qualified in many ways.

...A close friend who has been to many of my classes says that knowing my own personal struggles is what makes her trust me as a teacher. She says when I’m encouraging people in class to be kind to themselves, it means all the more coming from someone who knows so deeply the difficult battle of learning to love oneself. To her, it feels authentic and makes her trust the process I am guiding her through."

thriveglobal.com We’re all just humans finding our way through the chaos and yoga is called a practice for a reason. Here, Jasmine opens up about her own struggles and affirms that you can be depressed and still do a good job.
