This is a *big* topic for me personally, for my fellow yoga teacher colleagues, and for the greater yoga community in general. I therefore poured a lot of thought and time into writing my newest blog post: “What Makes Yoga Yoga? A Response to Social Media Critics”.

Many people claim to know real yoga when they see it. In fact, the act of accusing people of doing something that “shouldn’t be called yoga” in social media videos & posts is becoming more & more common these days.

As innovation in the yoga world rises in the forms of creative sequencing, unique props, and different approaches to the practice, I know that the question of “how much can we innovate and still call it yoga?” is on many of our minds.

Check out my blog post to see how I address the issues of boundaries, authenticity, and social media critics in the yoga world.

I hope this piece offers you an interesting perspective to mull over, and perhaps some helpful ideas for responding the next time someone suggests that what you teach “isn’t yoga”.

It doesn’t have to hurt to work. What’s the best way to soften your hard body?

You don’t have to grind down your soft-tissues to get them to lengthen, soften, or loosen. In fact, the more you bully your soft tissues, the more you arouse their innate defense mechanism. They brace in response to threat, via the muscle spindle response. Guess what else braces? Other nearby muscles who rally to protect the tissue under attack.

The more you push, the more they push back. So when you’re rolling yourself like you’re ironing your birthday suit, your fascial tissues will likely swell and inflame full of defensive cytokines and make you feel even more swollen & stiff than before. Often as you roll, or stick or whatever, the “ouch” that you feel is your nervous system kicking into high gear and telling you that you’re pushing too hard, and to please back off. Are you listening? Or BALLdozing through it?

I started studying massage at age 18 & practiced self massage to replicate the hands of Masters on my own body. I’ve experimented with every kind of self-massage object; from wood, to metal, rubber, vibration, foam, sports balls, gadgets, you name it. My own subjective experience? 🌑🌑🌑
Soft is supreme. 🌑🌑🌑
I’ve been a soft-tool dealer for more than a decade, but there have been scant studies on soft tools, it seems like the hard tool brands and sports balls (especially lacrosse balls) have dominated the market and the research. That’s why its so refreshing to finally see superb peer-reviewed research (not pay for placement research!) that exposes the truth about HARD vs. SOFT.
