Editing a video for a private client. Who would have guessed tech skills would be required of a yoga teacher?

Yoda (one of my four kitties) getting in a little down dog cat-style before I turn on Zoom. I was a anxious about conducting yoga class this way, mainly because I am uncomfortable seeing my own image on screen. But with a little practice with Zoom pro Betsy Weiss, I became more comfortable and the class went well. Thanks, Betsy!

Props needed: yoga mat, a chair, a belt and a 2 blankets, a block/ thick book/block sized thick pillow. Go to and type in the amount. Since it’s PayPal, it's easy and secure. Don’t have a PayPal account? No worries.

Faith Weber, a long-time student of Dina's, sent us this message along with a couple how-to photos showing how she is using yoga to stay healthy while working from home:

"This morning I remembered to tie myself up as a posture reminder (dorky photo below). At first I didn’t notice it much, but after a couple hours I noticed I was paying more attention and standing straighter. Since I’m working at home for the foreseeable future, I’ll try to remember to do this for part of each day and see what happens. I have sore muscles after doing this, which is interesting."

All you need to make this gentle brace is a yoga strap. Here are the instructions:

1. wrap the strap around your mid-abdomen (thoracic) from back to front;
2. pull each end up and over the same shoulder (left end over left shoulder, right end over right);
3. cross the ends over the back; and
4. pull each end toward your mid-abdomen and tie.

Faith added that she finds yoga helpful every day: "stretching morning and evening, focusing on breath to relax and go back to sleep in the middle of the night, noticing when I’m doing weird things with my shoulders at the computer. Even that little bit of random awareness and practice helps, particularly during crazy times like this."

Alan Leon just sent us this sweet photo of his student Earl practicing tree pose with his granddaughter. We should all be so lucky to have a grandparent or grandchild with whom to yoga in the living room! The only pose I can get my children to do is savasana...

We are partially closing Island Yoga for at least the next few weeks.

The following classes WILL continue to meet (unless we send further updates):

Sundays 9 - 10 am Mix Level Active/Restore with Alan

Tuesdays 9-10 am Beginning/Intermediate with Dawn

Thursdays 10:30-11:45 am Tai Chi Qigong with Nicole S (in
the courtyard so rain will cancel)

Fridays noon - 1 pm Length and Strength with Margaret

Tianna will be offering Beach Yoga (weather permitting days) &/or Live Streaming Yoga on Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday at 10:30am. Please email Tianna at [email protected] if you would like to be notified of updates and links to access theses class opportunities

All other classes and workshops (including the Spring Equinox Restorative Yoga & Ear Acupuncture benefit class) will be cancelled starting Saturday, March 14.

We will extend the end dates for both studio passes and series with individual teachers and keep you updated on further class cancelations as well as a reopening date.

If you choose to attend class, please follow these guidelines:

wash your hands before class
bring your own props if you have them & a clean towel to put
over props you may use
stay home if you are not feeling well

Our Story

Founded in 2010, Island Yoga is a collaborative of diverse, highly trained and experienced teachers offering a wide range of classes seven days a week. We are located in a small courtyard studio just a few steps away from Alameda’s beautiful Ballena Bay and breath-taking views of San Francisco. Our space is small but warm and welcoming to students of all ages and abilities. Small classes yield a good teacher-to-student ratio so that every student who wishes to may get individual attention. We also offer workshops and special events incorporating our sister providers of acupuncture, sound baths, Reiki, aromatherapy, and Feldenkrais. Some of our teachers’ specialties are: Alignment-Based Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Yoga for Back Care, Therapeutic and Gentle Yoga, Tune-Up Therapy, Yoga for Strength, and Tai Chi Qigong. Private classes in Qigong Healing, Thai Yoga Therapy, and Korean Martial Arts are available by appointment.
