Bok-Fu-Do, meaning “the System of the White Tiger” was developed and founded by Grandmaster Richard Lee in 1967. It is a Chinese system of martial arts that is composed of many different fighting arts from around the world.

This past Wednesday was the 34th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day. At East West Kung Fu, we are proud to have a management team and instructor staff that is over 50% women. Bok Fu Do empowers all of its practitioners to have self confidence and strength of mind, body, and spirit. The women of our organization are proud to have represented our teachers and the Bok Fu Do system in National, International, and World competition in many capacities - as competitors, coaches, judges, referees, tournament directors, and more. We seek to inspire the next generation of strong girls and women to believe in themselves, to develop their capability, and to change the world through their leadership.
Did you know... not only is it Senior Grandmaster Lee’s birthday, there are THREE other black belt/instructor birthdays today, making it by far the most common birthday amongst our staff. Please also wish a very happy birthday today to Mr. Worden, Ms. Davis, and Ms. Hawkins. We hope you all have wonderful birthdays filled with appreciation, love, and celebration.

Congratulations again to all who participated in the 2019 IBFDA United States Kuo Shu Championship this past weekend. Some of our students did so well that they were given rank promotions at the tournament based on their performance in competition. Did you know that in 1992, Senior Grandmaster Lee presented a 1st Degree Black Belt at a tournament? Time for a Bok Fu Do history quiz! Who is pictured here receiving her Black Belt in 1992? Tip: She was the FIRST woman ever out of Senior Grandmaster Lee’s students to receive her Black Belt in Bok Fu Do. If you were there on Saturday at the tournament, Senior Grandmaster Lee mentioned this fact during his morning address!

Asking empowering questions can be a great catalyst for change. Today’s #wednesdaywisdom from Senior Grandmaster Lee challenges us to evaluate not only how we spend our time each day, but what kind of life will make us feel truly fulfilled. If you’re not happy with what you traded your time for today, think about what needs to change to have a better result tomorrow!

Today our student spotlight is on Mr. Muranaka, who is eight years old, a Purple Belt, and studies at East West San Ramon.
His teacher, Mr. Fitzsimmons, shared what makes Mr. Muranaka stand out as a student:
One of Mr. Muranaka's most endearing qualities as a student is his ability to focus when faced with challenges. This is evident in moments where he has the opportunity to demonstrate in front of others. Whether it's being picked as the best in the class or performing at a student tournament, Mr. Muranaka sees challenges as an opportunity and strives to seize the moment.
We also asked Mr. Muranaka to share what makes Bok Fu Do special to him:
When did you start studying Bok Fu Do?
I started when I was 4 years old.
What belt would you like to get to one day?
What do you enjoy most about studying Bok Fu Do?
I like working on all my techniques and kicks and watching them get better as I practice.
How many tournaments have you been to? What was your favorite thing about them?
I have been to seven tournaments. I love stick-fighting and wish there was a class just to practice!
What would you say to a friend who is thinking about getting started?
Oh, you should definitely get started as soon as possible, you’re missing out on so much fun!
What has been the most challenging thing for you in your training and how have you improved/overcome it?
One of the hardest things for me so far has been working on my stances, and building my legs. I had to learn to fight through the burn.
Mr. Muranaka’s dad also had this to say about the changes he’s seen in his son since he started training:
I have watched my son barely balance on one leg to being able to throw multi kick combinations off of one leg. Bok Fu Do has helped him with his core strength which has really developed over the years. Bok Fu Do has helped him develop not only his muscles but also his brain, as he has gained confidence in himself.
Keep up the good work, Mr. Muranaka! We can’t wait to see what you accomplish through your hard work.

Have you ever heard the saying, “Practice makes perfect?” This common saying is not quite right: only PERFECT practice makes perfect. Another way of thinking of it is, “Practice makes permanent.” Whatever your habits are (whether physical, mental, or emotional) in any area of your life, that is what you can expect to come out under pressure. If you are careless, lazy, and casual in practice, that is how you will perform. If you are focused, disciplined, and diligent, then you can expect your best to come out under the brightest lights.

It’s Student Spotlight time! Today we take a look at Mr. Franklin, an IBFDA 4th degree brown belt who studies at East West Lafayette.
His teacher, Mr. Stamm, had this to say: “Mr. Franklin has been around since the earliest days of the Lafayette school. He has had harder times with some belts than others, but he has always held fast, paid attention, and worked hard to improve himself. He's a smart guy with good work ethic, a conscientious personality, and a continually helpful spirit around the school.”
In his own words, here’s what Bok Fu Do means to Mr. Franklin:
How old are you?
15 years old.
How long have you been studying Bok Fu Do?
I've been studying since I was 7.
What were your goals when you started?
My goals were to become a Black Belt, and to learn Kung Fu because it looked really cool in the movies. I wanted to move like Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen!
What are your goals for the upcoming year?
I'm still focused on getting a Black Belt, but my goals for the year are to work on expressing my qi, earn my 3rd degree brown belt and achieve my 3a trainee rank; I like how teaching helps you understand things better, and it's satisfying when you get somebody to improve and you can say that you helped them do it.
How have you grown/changed, due to your experience studying Bok Fu Do?
It has helped me deal with stress in a productive way, and rise to expectations, whether at East West, at home, or at school - or eventually at work! I know that there are going to be situations involving pressure, even after I'm done with school.
How has Bok Fu Do impacted your life outside of the school?
It has helped me know the power of practice and hard work that I can incorporate into the rest of my life. It's about being dedicated and consistent with your effort - and when you care about what you do, it's easier to try harder and reach for better goals.
What would you say to someone thinking about getting started?
Don't worry too much if you don't progress in your rank as fast as you may have imagined; just focus on learning as much as you can and having fun doing it! If you do that, the rank is going to come.
What do you enjoy the most about Bok Fu Do?
I appreciate the kindness of the community. At tournaments, you always see people running around, volunteering to help one another. At East West, the teachers are always helpful and give the best feedback for the students to improve. Also, Mrs. Buckley's brown belt classes are a lot of fun!
What do you find most challenging about studying at East West?
It requires a lot of work and dedication. Right now my challenges are learning to use my qi better, and learning how to trust my body and training so that the qi comes out right.
How long have you been competing?
I have been competing for about 5-6 years.
How many years have you attended Baltimore?
I have attended Baltimore for 3 years now.
What was the most fun event during the US Kuo Shu International Championship Tournament in Baltimore this year? Stick fighting! At Baltimore, they let you use TWO. Also, it's really fun cheering on all your friends in their events all over the tournament, and having them cheer you on too.
What did you enjoy the most, whether inside or outside of competition events, during your Baltimore trip?
Cheering for other East West people, getting to know everyone better, watching the Lei Tai fights too, and being part of the whole team spirit.
What is the most significant thing you learned from competing at the US Kuo Shu International Championship Tournament?
I have learned not to let circumstances change how I perform or act. I always want to do my best, and put my best foot forward. If I do that, I can feel confident about my performance no matter what.
Keep up the hard work, Mr. Franklin! You are a great example to our younger students at East West Lafayette, and we look forward to what the future has in store for you.
