San Luis Valley Health

Alamosa Quilt Company, you ladies rock!

Thank you, Lynn, your awesome group of sewers, and SLVH Foundation/Innovation leadership for helping keep our staff safely caring for patients at SLV Health.

Looking for a simple face mask while you go out in public? We have Buffs and bandannas in stock - kids sizes available too! Open 10a-5p most days, Closed Wednesdays, 10a-4p Sundays. Come see us!

We just wanted to remind all of our loyal customers that we are OPEN for business 10-5 daily (closed Wed) providing essential services. Regular sanitation and social distancing protocols enforced!

Hey San Luis Valley Health - the filters are stuffed and your first batch of masks are ready to go!!! We're ready for the next round! It's awesome to see how the SLV has rallied around this project to help protect our healthcare workers. #SLVStrong

Please note, we are not selling or distributing masks at KMS - we volunteered to help with the final steps of preparing masks for the hospital to use - all masks are returned to SLV Health when completed.

Thank you to Rustic Living for laser-cutting all of the mask and filter material! Thank you to Weiss Dry Cleaners for pressing the material flat for cutting. Thank you Alamosa Quilt Company for helping rally local seamstresses to the cause. Thanks to everyone in the community who sewed up masks. And thank you to the Innovation Team at SLV Health (Kelly Gurule, Michelle Gay, and Dawn Krebs) for finding innovative solutions to keep our local healthcare workers safe while supplies are scarce!

Help needed in making surgical gowns for healthcare workers! Stop by Alamosa Quilt Company today (Mar. 30) from 10-noon to pick up a kit! #SLVStrong

I still have kits left! I will be at the shop again tomorrow, Tuesday, March 31, 2020 from 10 am until noon. Please stop by and pick up some kits if you can help. You do not need to get out of your car if you don't want to. Just pull up in front of the shop and I will put them in your car for you.

I have somewhere close to 350 plastic tablecloths in the back of my car that I need turned into disposable surgical gowns. I have posted a detailed pattern on my blog. Here is the direct link:

The link is also posted on the shop website:

If you can make some of these for our hospital I need you to come to the shop on Monday, March 30, 2020 to pick up kits. I will be there between 10 am and noon or until the kits are gone.

Peg helped me to figure out the pattern and the most efficient way to cut the tablecloths. Following the directions in the link above, you can make FOUR gowns from THREE tablecloths. So I will be handing out the tablecloths in threes, which means if you take a kit you are committing yourself to make FOUR gowns. Each "kit" will make four.

You can also go to Dollar Tree or Walmart or Dollar General or Family Dollar or ... you get the idea and buy tablecloths. The third photo shows what you need. Get the ones that are 54" by 108". Other sizes will work, but the cutting instructions are written for the 54" by 108" rectangular ones.

Rustic Living

Here's another step in the San Luis Valley Health community mask iniative! Rustic Living here in Alamosa is laser cutting mask and filter material and preparing kits for local volunteer seamstreses to assemble. This whole project has been incredible to watch - thank you to everyone involved! #slvstrong

We have cut and distributed over 1,700 mask kits for our local hospital. The outpouring community support has been incredible!

Thanks for the project today San Luis Valley Health! We tore apart a ton of air filters and have almost 600 sq-ft of MERV filter material ready to go for the community mask initiative. Bring us more! #slvstrong

Looking for a way to blow off some steam while maintaining social distance?? Buy a bike and go get some fresh air! All of our rental bikes now have a SALE price up to 40% OFF! We also have a huge selection of new bikes to choose from. Our daily and hourly sanitation protocols have been improved to minimize the risk of catching COVID-19. Stop by and see us today.

Thanks Alamosa County Chamber of Commerce for sharing this message! On Saturday we reached out to Monarch Mountain and Wolf Creek Ski Area to find out what their plans were for the coming weeks of spring break amidst the COVID-19 outbreak. Both responded that it was business as usual at the ski area and they were not anticipating any changes in normal operation besides increasing sanitation of high traffic areas. Fast forward to Sunday morning... we wake up to an executive order by the governor requiring all ski areas in the state shut down effective immediately until 3/22/19. Nobody saw this coming - we have tourists who have traveled many miles, taken time off of work, planned their getaways for spring break, and they literally drove to the ski area only to find the doors locked. At KMS we spent most of Sunday morning issuing refunds for unused ski rental equipment and suggesting they sandboard instead. Some people made the best of the situation, others took their refund and drove home. We are anticipating significant impacts to our sales over the coming weeks - spring break is extremely important for our business as it's final shot in the arm from winter which keeps the lights on and payroll paid until summer. This whole situation feels like we woke up in the middle of an apocalyptic horror film. Luckily today we had some incredible customers in the store renting bikes, renting XC skis, and making purchases which took the edge off the shock of the morning. We plan to remain open as long as customers are coming through our doors over the next few weeks. At KMS, we have implemented a daily and hourly sanitation regiment to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19 to the best of our abilities. We don't want to spread disease, but we do not want to close our doors during this situation either! We are very lucky to have customers who continue to support us through a difficult and uncertain time. That being said, there are many businesses in our rural communities who also require your support to stay in business through this pandemic. Think of the FIVE small businesses or restaurants you appreciate most in our community. Try to support them in some way in the next two weeks - ordering takeout, purchasing a gift card, buying an item, tip your waiter a bit extra - every little bit counts for small local businesses and restaurants to survive the COVID-19 crisis. Shop local and keep our community alive - together we win!

Our local businesses are doing an incredible job taking extra measures to protect customers while also implementing creative ways to adapt (such as curbside pickup and delivery). Support them πŸ’“

Stay sharp on beacon use! Did you know there's a public access beacon park near Lobo Overlook at the top of Wolf Creek Pass?

Yesterday, the team traveled up to Wolf Creek to train on partner rescue techniques in avalanche scenarios.
Continuing to practice using your beacon, probe and shovel is something every winter backcountry user should do.

Thank you to Wolf Creek Avalanche School for allowing the public to use your beacon park!

[02/07/20]   San Juan Nordic Club just shared:
"Big Meadows was groomed today, Feb 6. The trails are in excellent shape and there were a few flurries in the air up there this afternoon.
Rock Creek received 3 inches of light, dry snow this week and will likely be groomed for the weekend. Its been fairly dry at Rock Creek since New Years but the trails are holding up and skiing well. Maybe we are heading into a good storm cycle next week!

Lots of snow just in time for the weekend! Stay safe out there. Always check the CAIC avalanche forecast before heading into the backcountry.

The storm is on track. Dangerous avalanche conditions are developing. More snow today means more volume and bigger avalanches than yesterday. Get the forecast before you head out.
