ASAP is about getting outdoors, having fun, and challenging ourselves and others through adventure experiences. We believe that activities like hiking, rock climbing, backpacking, whitewater kayaking, mountain biking, and many other adventure sports challenge us to improve our skills, help us stay healthy, and provide unique opportunities for building meaningful relationships. We also believe that we are stewards of the incredible natural resources available to us in and near the San Luis Valley. As special permit holders for our local public lands it is important to us to give of our time and resources through service. Finally, from its humble beginnings in 1925, the Adventure Program has evolved into a highly capable leadership development program with significant potential to become a leader within university adventure education and recreation. The Adventure Leadership and Programming (ALP) Apprenticeship was created as a co-curricular program to supplement academic coursework with practical experience, mentoring, and continuing education. The ALP Apprenticeship is built on a two year training, continuing education, and advancement model for student employees of ASAP. The term “apprenticeship” was selected due to the ongoing education, mentorship, and feedback inherent in the nature of adventure education and typical of such intensive leadership development programs. A student will typically enter the program as a sophomore and begin working toward the goal of becoming a Trip Leader in one or more outdoor disciplines. This process most often takes a minimum of one and a half years and advancement is based on completion of trainings, experience, and demonstrated competency in specific human, outdoor, and educational skills. Students who remain in the apprenticeship beyond two years have the opportunity to continue to develop their skills and are often at a level of development where they are performing at high levels of competency, contributing to the development of newer apprentices, and take part in the continual critical and creative evaluation of the entire program.

We had an incredible time at the SLV's first Outdoor Recreation conference hosted by San Luis Valley Great Outdoors, ASU's Salazar Rio Grande del Norte Center, and Adams State Adventure Program. Local presenters focused on the local, state, and national economic impacts of outdoor recreation. Kristi Mountain Sports, LLC, Christi Bode of Moxiecran Media, and Windsor Hotel, and non-profit partners such as Alpine Achievers Initiative discussed the rising scope of influence that outdoor recreation has on our local economy and it's quality of life. Lise Aageenbrug, Executive Director for Outdoor Industry Association and former ED for Great Outdoors Colorado - GOCO provided the keynote, emphasizing the national economic impact of recreation like over $878 billion to the national economy, according to 2017 federal data, not to mention providing over 7.6 million Americans with jobs. Lise encouraged continued investment in our local efforts to engage youth in outdoor recreation and leveraging our community's unique ability to collaborate across many organizations. We are grateful for all who attended and look forward to continuing our efforts with so many excellent local and state level partners to strengthen and grow outdoor recreation in the SLV!

Final hours to vote folks!! We can win this thing..

Why is Adams State the top adventure school?

There are many great reasons, as we have covered over the last few days. Whether its the Adventure Program, the Adventure Sports teams, or the Adventure Leadership & Programming minor, Adams State University is dedicated to getting people outside and living a healthy lifestyle. The San Luis Valley provides an incredible amount of opportunities for recreation, and without the crowds of being near a big city.

We know this is just a social media contest, but we are honored to be considered in the top 2 Adventure Schools in Elevations Outdoor's contest. We hope this sheds some light on how incredible our town and our school is. We would be happy to go to school and adventure anywhere on this list, but we choose ASU!

2 Days left to vote ASU into the top spot! Taking down the University of Utah won't be easy, but here's why we can:

How about all of the collaborations ASU and the Adventure Program have going on with our local communities? Just this year ASAP has partnered with the local Bureau of Land Management field office, the city of Alamosa, Alamosa High School, Rio Grande Farm Park, the Alpine Achievers Initiative, Boys & Girls Club, the Great Sand Dunes National Park, and more. Most of our programming and partnerships are aimed at exposing the communities of the greater San Luis Valley to life outside, whether that's taking kids to the Sand Dunes or working with local municipality to improve access to nature within city limits.

This picture was taken at the Great Sand Dunes NP (of course) during our annual ALP Expedition. Students have to hike across it at night to avoid the heat.

Let's talk about the Adventure Program!

The Adams State Adventure Program is a co-curricular leadership development program that works closely with the Adventure Leadership & Programming minor. Students who work for the program or are in their first year of the minor can get over 50 days in the field of hands-on training. ASAP consists of a student-led trip program, climbing wall, challenge course, rental center, & and a wilderness orientation program.

Pictured here are two climbers (master & young grasshopper) learning about traditional multi-pitch climbing at Tres Piedras.

Vote for Adams State for the Top Adventure School! We're up against another great institution with great people, the University of Utah. There are so many reasons why Adams is worth this distinction. Just look at my photos for what's out our door!

4 days left to vote for Adams State as the top Adventure School!

Here is one great reason why we believe we are the top adventure school:

The San Luis Valley!

We have both the San Juans and the Sangre De Cristo mountain ranges as our playground. Want to climb big alpine peaks and ski down them? The Sangres have you covered. Want to mountain bike in January? We have over 300 days of sunshine each year, and our lower elevation trails in the San Juans stay open for most of the year.

Living in a small town, there is not as much competition for these resources either! Can you imagine running into dozens of other people on your backcountry ski tour or mountain bike ride? Neither can we. In the San Luis Valley, the backcountry means the backcountry!

Here is a glimpse of our playground! Pictured is a snapshot from our Adventure Sports mountain biking camp. Can you spot the riders?

This year our Adventure Sports teams had competitors place top 10 at Nationals in both Mountain Biking and Rock Climbing! Our teams may be young, but they are making an impact in their fields.

Why Is Adams State University in the running for Top Adventure School? Well back in 1925 Luther Bean, a professor at the time, saw the vast potential in our surrounding lands and started the Outing Club to get students outside, founding the 3rd oldest adventure program in the nation! ASU & Alamosa have come along way since the days of Luther Bean but we still share his vision of getting all of our students outside!

We are humbled by all of the support we have received thus far and look forward to sharing a few of the reasons why we believe ASU is the best adventure school in the nation!
