Rio Frio Ice Fest

This year's Beach-themed festival includes Carved Ice Sculptures, the Rio Frio 5k on Ice, an icy bonfire, the savory Grub and Pub, Fat Tire Bike race, the Polar Plunge, and the spinning Ice Carousel!

You have an entirely different perspective when running down the middle of a winding, scenic river. The Rio Frio 5K on Ice course is entirely on the frozen Rio Grande River at Alamosa, Colorado. It's a unique spot where there are no rapids, in the lowest spot of the largest alpine valley in the world. The deep cold settles in each winter. Very thick ice is created, the kind of ice that is normally only found on lakes.

City of Alamosa

Yesterday at high noon, a handful of hearty folks enjoyed a dip in the icy, icy Blanca Vista Pond as part of #RioFrioIceFest 2020. The first photo, L-R, shows Alamosa Councilor Kristina Daniel, La Jara Mayor Larry Zaragoza, and Alamosa Mayor Ty Coleman talking the talk, while Jes Jolly takes all that under consideration. Then, the follow up.

The Best Time

The awesome folks from The Best Time/SLV Sports & Wellness put together this short video to show RIO FRIO 5K RACE participants how to put their timing chips on properly.

Sign up by 12:00 pm TODAY (Jan 24) at the Alamosa Family Recreation Center or online. Then catch us TONIGHT at Milagros Coffee House for Packet Pick Up and Race Registration from 5:30-7:30 pm. LAST CHANCE to register is Saturday morning (Jan 25) at the Alamosa Senior Center 8:00-9:30 am.

This year, the race is CHIP-TIMED instead of gun-timed. What’s the difference? Chip-timed means that your race time STARTS when you cross the starting line instead of when the starting gun goes off!

Ensure your chip is read by properly attaching the chip to your shoe. We’ll clip the chip for you once you’ve crossed the finish line!

A quick tutorial on how to fasten your timing chip to your shoe!

The water is great! Come take a dip with us this Sunday at high noon at Blanca Vista Park. Then thaw out in our CHANGING/WARMING HUT AKA THE MOBILE COMMAND VEHICLE.

Special thanks to the Alamosa Fire Dept, the Alamosa County Sheriff’s Department, and the Alamosa Volunteer Search and Rescue team for helping out this year!

Milagros Coffee House is busy getting ready for the Packet Pick up Party 🐠Under the Sea🐠with Ukulele Playing Mermaids, Coconut Corn Hole, Face Painting and tasty treats. Kick off the #RioFrioIceFest tomorrow at 5:30 pm at Milagros

Pond Curling at Blanca Vista Parks

Curling anyone? Join us for some fun and try out pond curling! Challenge your friends and family to a game. Play is designed to be social and unstructured. We’ll provide the ‘stones’. The games begin Sunday at 11 a.m. at Blanca Vista Park.

A huge thanks goes out to the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention & Control crew, who came out and flooded our curling space.

Milagros is throwing down for Early RIO FRIO 5K RACE PACKET PICK UP! Come get your race packet and check out all they have to offer—music, games, little grubs + a full menu, and more.

Fun for all, even if you are not picking up your packet! See you there Friday 5:30-7:30 p.m.

City of Alamosa

City staff recently installed new pedestrian flags on the east side of San Juan Avenue at Main Street (HWY 160). Any person crossing Main there can use one; simply pick one up from the holders on either side of Main Street, hold it up as you cross from inside the crosswalk, and put it in the flag holder on the other side after you have crossed for the next person to use.

The City installed the flags with CDOT’s approval. This is currently the only location approved by CDOT for flag use.

As a reminder, cars are required to yield to pedestrians inside any crosswalk in Colorado.

Luminaria X-Country Skiing

This year’s Luminaria X-Country Skiing event will be epic! Since snow is thinning at the golf course, we’re moving the activity over to Blanca Vista Park, which is just across the street (6540 N. River Rd). We’ve groomed a loop on the pond and the pond ice is around 15 inches thick. Wax your skis, dust off those snowshoes, or visit Kristi Mountain Sports, LLC for rentals, and we’ll see you this Friday, 6-8 p.m.

Enjoying our Rio and Frio

Each winter a deep cold settles in the largest alpine valley in the world, where an iconic river flows. Alamosa, Colorado sets in the low point of the San Luis Valley and is often the coldest spot in the nation. Although that sounds miserable, it is also one of the sunniest places in America and dryness in the air keeps the cold from penetrating like it does in humid places. The cold creates beauty. It provides unique experiences. The Rio Frio Ice Fest lets you take advantage of its wonder.

Where else could you run or walk down the middle of a winding, scenic river? The Rio Frio 5K on Ice is one of the premier events of the Rio Frio Ice Fest. Most every year a thick layer of ice allows the entire course to be on the frozen river. In 2018, during one of the warmest years on record, the lake at nearby Blanca Vista Park still froze so that 2/3 of the course could be on ice. Blanca Vista Park is also the site of the Rio Frio Ice Fest’s Ice Carousel and Polar Plunge. While the plunge is self explanatory, the ice carousel is an idea found in Finland where a large circle of ice is cut and then powered by a motor to give people a merry ride.

Downtown Alamosa is where the rest of the Rio Frio Ice Fest takes place. Watch professional ice carvers create sculpture according to the annual theme. Kids can take part in a costume contest and meet famous characters. You can get free hot drinks and treats at retail stores that also hold specials. The afternoon Grub n Pub tour of downtown restaurants and pubs always sells out. The day is capped off with a Bonfire in Ice at San Juan Ave & Main St, which is also where you can get the best information for the whole festival.

Join us the last weekend each January for a memorable time for you, your friends and family!
