Safety Courses - NYS Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation

Under Brianna's Law, all motorboat operators born on or after Jan. 1, 1993 will need a boating safety certificate beginning in January 2020. The age requirement will expand every year until 2025 when everyone in NYS will be required to have a boating safety certificate in order to operate a motorboat. October 7, 2019
Mariners are reminded that the New York State Canal System is scheduled to close for the 2019 navigation season on Wednesday, October 16th at 5:00 p.m. All recreational vessel operators should plan their trips in order to insure exiting the Canal System by that time.
Commercial vessel operators requesting use of the Canal System after October 16th are required to obtain a Post Navigation Season Permit by contacting the Navigation Program Manager at (518) 461-0942 as soon as possible.

Mariners are advised that the 15th Annual Cardboard Boat Races will be held at Fort Hardy Park Beach in Schuylerville on Saturday, August 10, 2019, from noon to 3:00 p.m. The event area is located below Champlain Canal Lock C-5 in Northumberland.
There will be small homemade watercraft participating in the event and boaters should proceed with caution, at a "No Wake" speed through the area which is not in the navigation channel.

Mariners are advised of a harmful algae bloom (HAB) in the Canal between Champlain Canal Lock C-7 and Lock C-8 in Ft. Edward.
Exposure to HABs and toxins can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea or vomiting; skin, eye or throat irritation and allergic reactions or breathing difficulties. People and pets should avoid contact with HABs and should rinse off with clean water if contact occurs.
No swimming or other water related activities should be attempted in this area of the Canal. Boaters should use gloves when handling lines in the lock chamber. Avoid water contact until further notice.

NYS Canal Corporation

#NTM: Dragon Boat Races will be held on Saturday, August 3rd, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Use of Waterford Harbor floating docks will be restricted to participating vessels.

During this time and an hour before and after the event, alternative docking for commercial and pleasure craft will be available between Locks E-3 and E-4 in the Waterford Flight, as directed by the Lock Operator who can be reached at (518) 237-0810.

The area will remain open to through-traffic, but commercial traffic requiring clearance through the event must call (518) 461-0942, at least 24 hours in advance.

Limited docking on the terminal wall, which offers no services, will be available on Thursday, August 1st and docking space will not be available on Friday, August 2nd. Mariners are also advised that practice sessions held on Thursday and Friday, also Saturday during the races could cause minor delays to vessels passing through the event area.

There will be breaks in between heats during which traffic may pass through as directed. Safety and fire department boats will be present to monitor traffic.

Plan itineraries accordingly.
