International Japanese Yoga Association

The International Japanese Yoga Association (IJYA) is a not for profit association devoted to the study of Shin-shin-toitsu-do, a form of Japanese yoga and meditation created by Nakamura Tempu Sensei.

The purpose of the IJYA is to make the practice of Shin-shin-toitsu-do style Japanese yoga available to people all over the world regardless of age, gender, or nationality. It has members in Japan, the USA, the United Kingdom, Australia, Estonia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Canada, Malaysia, Slovenia, the Netherlands, France, India, Germany, Italy, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Greece, Poland, and other areas. All members are treated equally and varying styles of Shin-shin-toitsu-do are accepted. The IJYA is a not for profit organization.

Human beings have a tremendous latent potential that's waiting to be unearthed. Nakamura Tempu Sensei discovered the extraordinary energy of mind and body unification beside an ancient waterfall in the Himalayan mountains, allowing him to heal from tuberculosis and manifest a new state of consciousness. Upon his return to Japan, he created a new path called Shin-shin-toitsu-do: "The Way of Mind and Body Unification." A form of Japanese yoga and meditation, Shin-shin-toitsu-do unearths our buried talents and rarely realized potential. THE IJYA PRESIDENT The International Japanese Yoga Association (IJYA) is a not for profit association devoted to the study of Shin-shin-toitsu-do. In Japan, the IJYA is known as the Kokusai Nihon Yoga Renmei, and its world headquarters is in Kyoto. Sawai Atsuhiro Sensei is the President of the IJYA. He is a best selling author in Japan, focusing on books about Shin-shin-toitsu-do and meditation. He is also a direct student of Nakamura Sensei, having obtained the highest level of teaching certification from the founder of Shin-shin-toitsu-do. THE IJYA INTERNATIONAL CHIEF INSTRUCTOR Sawai Sensei has appointed H. E. Davey Sensei as the IJYA Vice President and International Chief Instructor. Davey Sensei, an award winning writer and the author of Japanese Yoga: The Way of Dynamic Meditation, oversees the day to day running of the IJYA. He has studied under four top students of Nakamura Sensei, and he began practicing Shin-shin-toitsu-do as a child. He serves as the point of contact for IJYA members worldwide and works directly with the IJYA HQ in Kyoto. He has received the highest level of IJYA teaching certification. JOINING THE IJYA Recently formed in 2013, membership in the IJYA is FREE. The IJYA is now accepting new members. Members only need to provide their basic contact information and e-mail address to join. They receive an attractive membership certificate and a subscription to the IJYA Journal, the publication of the Kokusai Nihon Yoga Renmei. Qualified members are also eligible for teaching certification from the IJYA HQ in Japan. Send all membership inquires to [email protected]. LEARNING MORE ABOUT SHIN-SHIN-TOITSU-DO Shin-shin-toitsu-do, which is also known as Shin-shin-toitsu-ho, has been widely practiced in Japan since the 1920s. Its founder, Nakamura Tempu Sensei, taught a very large number of students, many of them celebrities and well-known figures in Japanese society. However, outside of Japan this uniquely Japanese version of yoga is still in its infancy, with few training centers (dojo or juku) available to the average person in the West. Interested parties can learn more about this art by reading Japanese Yoga: The Way of Dynamic Meditation (Michi Publishing), the first book in English about the original mind and body unification principles of Nakamura Sensei. Recently, Michi Publishing issued The Teachings of Tempu: Practical Meditation for Daily Life by Davey Sensei and The True Paths to Meditation by Sawai Sensei should published in the near future. Direct instruction outside of Japan is offered by Davey Sensei's Sennin Foundation Center for Japanese Cultural Arts in California, which serves as the hub of IJYA activities in the West. Visit www.senninfoundation.com for more information. For information about Shin-shin-toitsu-do instruction in Japan, visit Sawai Sensei's blog at http://tenpujuku.com. The Tenpu Juku is Sawai Sensei's private school of Japanese yoga, and the blog is in Japanese. Individuals outside of Japan that wish to practice at the Tenpu Juku should first make contact with the IJYA. Send e-mail to Davey Sensei, IJYA International Chief Instructor, at [email protected]. THE IJYA JOURNAL The worldwide IJYA Journal is a members only publication of the Kokusai Nihon Yoga Renmei (IJYA). IJYA membership is FREE. The journal is published periodically, and it offers instruction in Japanese yoga, meditation, and healing arts to the general public. The goal is to make the teachings of Nakamura Tempu Sensei available to a larger audience than has been the case in the past, with a particular emphasis on making his Japanese yoga available to more people in Western nations. The IJYA Journal is your chance to learn important mind and body unification principles that can help you in most every aspect of life. Plus, it's FREE to members, and our not for profit association will never give your contact information/e-mail address to other parties.

The Teachings of Tempu: Practical Meditation for Daily Life details the life and meditation techniques of Nakamura Tempu (1876-1968). Mr. Nakamura taught Shin-shin-toitsu-do (“The Way of Mind and Body Unification”) for over 50 years and authored bestselling books. He trained over 100,000 people, including members of the Japanese Imperial Family, government officials, business leaders, top athletes, celebrated actors, martial arts experts, and notable novelists.

The book begins with Mr. Nakamura’s early years and a global quest to cure his tuberculosis. This search took him to the USA, where he studied medicine at Columbia University. Next, he traveled to Europe, where he lived with actress Sarah Bernhardt and researched psychology. In Egypt he encountered Kaliapa, an Indian mystic and yoga master, who brought him to India for a final attempt to save his life. After austere meditation in the Himalayas, Nakamura Tempu attained enlightenment, shook off the bonds of illness, and returned to Japan a changed man.

The Teachings of Tempu uses episodes from Mr. Nakamura’s life to introduce his philosophy of mind and body unification, his forms of meditation, and how these skills can help you attain better health as well as deeper calmness, concentration, and willpower. It contains rare photos from Japan, which chronicle his long life. Also featured are extensive quotes from his books, the first time his writing has been offered in English. The Teachings of Tempu presents experiments and exercises you can try at home to understand mind and body unification—the essence of Mr. Nakamura’s realization and the secret to unlocking human potential. Illustrations of these exercises and forms of meditation are provided, along with an Introduction by Sawai Atsuhiro, a leading teacher of Shin-shin-toitsu-do and a direct student of Mr. Nakamura. Dr. Robert Carter, author and Professor Emeritus of Philosophy for Canada’s Trent University, wrote the Foreword.

Art of Shodo

Shin-shin-toitsu-do, "The Way of Mind and Body Unification," was founded in the early 1900s by Nakamura Tempu Sensei. Nakamura Sensei lived in India, where he studied the art of Raja yoga, the yoga of meditation. After studying medicine at Columbia University, he blended Indian meditation and health improvement with his background in medicine, psychology, Japanese healing arts and meditation, and Japanese martial arts. He taught for many years in Japan, authored best-selling books, and counted among his students a large number of Japan's top executives, politicians, fine artists, athletes, martial artists, and people from every walk of life. But few Westerners have yet been exposed to these extraordinary teachings.

Shin-shin-toitsu-do offers you practical forms of seated and moving meditation, breathing methods for health, stretching exercises, autosuggestion for altering negative habits, stress management, and self-healing techniques that are little-known in the West. Emphasis is also placed on the development of ki (chi in Chinese). Ki amounts to life energy, and its cultivation has a profound effect on mental and physical health. You, like many students, may experience greatly enhanced concentration, willpower, calmness, relaxation, and physical fitness.

Make a positive and life-altering decision. Consider adding Shin-shin-toitsu-do to your life, and discover a way of living rooted in health, happiness, and harmony. You can do just that by joining the International Japanese Yoga Association in Kyoto. Membership is FREE and includes a quarterly journal. Send e-mail to [email protected] for additional information.

Art of Shodo

About Japanese Yoga: The Way of Dynamic Meditation

Emphasizing gentle stretching and meditation exercises, the ultimate goal of Japanese yoga (Shin-shin-toitsu-do) is enhanced mind/body integration, calmness, and willpower for a healthier and fuller life. Developed by Nakamura Tempu Sensei in the early 1900s from Indian Raja yoga, Japanese martial arts and meditation practices, as well as Western medicine and psychotherapy, Japanese yoga offers a new approach to experienced yoga students and a natural methodology that newcomers will find easy to learn.

After a brief history of Shin-shin-toitsu-do, H. E. Davey Sensei presents Mr. Nakamura's Four Basic Principles to Unify Mind and Body. These principles relate the meditative experience to the movement of everyday living and thus make it a "dynamic meditation." Each of the Four Basic Principles is illustrated with step-by-step explanations of practical experiments.

Readers are then introduced to different forms of seated and moving meditation, health exercises, and self-healing arts. All these are linked back to the Four Basic Principles and can enhance performance in art, music, business, sports, and other activities. Readers learn to use Japanese yoga techniques throughout the day, without having to sit on the floor or seek out a quiet space.

Included at the end of the book are simple but effective stretching exercises, information about ongoing practice, and a glossary and reference section. Amply illustrated and cogently presented, Japanese Yoga belongs on every mind/body/spirit reading list.

Read Japanese Yoga: The Way of Dynamic Meditation and learn how the principles of mind and body coordination taught by Nakamura Sensei can lead you toward better health, deeper calmness, stronger concentration, and greater willpower.

Davey Sensei is Vice President and the International Chief Instructor. The duties of the President are to oversee the activities of the association, to offer instruction to the members via the IJYA quarterly journal, and to act as the “spiritual figurehead” for the group. The duties of the Vice President are to act as International Chief Instructor and to coordinate the activities of the group. In short, the day to day running of the IJYA is carried out by the Vice President, while the President monitors the activities of the IJYA. MEMBERS Membership is open to anyone with an interest in Shin-shin-toitsu-do. Membership is FREE. Interested parties can join the IJYA by sending an e-mail to the Vice President that provides their name, address, and e-mail address. Send e-mail to [email protected] A membership certificate is sent to new members, and all members receive the IJYA Journal. Contact information for the members of the IJYA is never sold or shared with outside parties, and you can cancel your membership/journal subscription at any time via e-mail. JOURNAL The IJYA publishes a journal that acts as the official means of communication with its members. The journal focuses on how to practice Shin-shin-toitsu-do, with the goal of helping as many people as possible learn to unify the mind and body in daily life. The journal also features excerpts from Sawai Atsuhiro’s and H. E. Davey’s books on Shin-shin-toitsu-do. INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION Teaching certification is offered to qualified IJYA members. Since the IJYA recognizes that there are different interpretations of Shin-shin-toitsu-do, it also recognizes and tolerates differences between instructors. There are three levels of certification, comparable to bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and PhD. Bilingual (Japanese/English) certificates are presented to fully qualified teachers. The certificates bear the name of the IJYA World Headquarters in Japan and feature the signature and seal of the President. The appointment of IJYA teachers is overseen by the President and Vice President. Both the President and the Vice President hold the highest level of teaching certification. CURRICULUM The IJYA accepts that different teachers will present Shin-shin-toitsu-do instruction in their own way, but all IJYA instructors base their classes on Nakamura Tempu Sensei’s Four Basic Principles to Unify Mind and Body. These principles are the common link between all IJYA instructors. Certified instructors can recommend their students for teaching certification within one level of their own. All instructor certifications, however, must approved by both the President and Vice President, who have final say in such matters. COMMUNICATION All communication between members and the IJYA is handled by the Vice President. The preferred language of communication is English or Japanese. (An exception is made for members in Japan, who can most easily correspond with the President and Kyoto headquarters directly.) Members should go through the Vice President/International Chief Instructor as opposed to attempting to directly communicate with the President and World Headquarters in Kyoto. When needed, inquires will be forwarded to the President for his response and/or suggestions. Contact the IJYA at [email protected]
