CUSTOM SADDLES - Horse is measured for fit and then the rider. Tree style is determined my customer. Base saddle is $3200 and it goes up from there.

WESTERN SADDLE REPAIRS - Using high quality materials

Extensive repairs - tree replacement, horn replacement, new riggings etc.
These saddles need to be seen and an estimate will be given.

RESTORING OLD SADDLES- This takes time and I prefer to do it when business is slower. They need taken apart and cleaned thoroughly. Then I like to apply oil over time, several weeks allowing the leather fibers to absorb without being saturated. Repairs are dyed to match as close as possible. Cost depends on what is needed. Until saddle is apart it is hard to see what repairs are needed. I like restoring and take pride in bringing life back into old saddles.

Some friends have a kids saddle to sell. She out grew it already. They would like $125. It is at my shop right now.
The picture is last June. Saddle was used on little mule and has breeching rings if needed. Also stirrups have twist and wrap. The bucking rolls are coming off and going on another saddle of theirs. Breeching and saddle bags do not go with saddle.

Saddles from the 60's cleaned up, repaired, conditioned and ready for a second round.

An Old McComb Bros saddle came in shop for some care. an knowing me I love these old jewels. I am not doing a full restore, but I have done repairs to stirrup leather, skirt, new tie strings and conchos, replaced nails that had worked out with slightly larger. Conditioned saddle. I need to repair horn and I will be done with it. Owners wants to come in and sit in saddle and have me lace the stirrup leathers to fit him. Then he wants to clean and do finish on saddle himself. I from an old catolog online where there where similar saddles made by McComb. This saddle could have been made somewhere between 1873 and 1918. the leather is in remarkable condition. Not all dried out or rotten.

Old Holster that I restored. Removed old lacing, hand sew belt loop that had came loose. Cut leatherr and slip down to a lace. Dyed lace. Conditioned holster, and relaced. Happy owner.

This saddle had a rigging installed by someone else. THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO PUT A RIGGING IN. Weakens tree, Some nails were sticking out behind. Pulled out those nails. Afraid to remove all because I could have broken tree.

Cleaned a used saddle up for customer that they got for husbands Christmas gift.

Saddle restores and a repair.

The twist and wrap turns the stirrup so that you are not fighting to keep your foot in it. It also reduces pain to knees and ankles.

These pictures of left and right fender. This shows the difference of fender when modified for shorter rider. Then I do a Hamley Twist and Wrap on many afterwards. When fenders are to long they can not be adjusted properly. also stirrup will not string well.

Broken horn from horse falling over. New horn installed and covered.

New fenders and stirrup leathers

English saddle padding came loose. Second photo padding sew back in place.

Stirrup leather and fender modification

Stirrup leathers and fenders should fit you and be comfortable. They should not be hurting your knee or ankle. They should be the correct length for rider.
You should be able to get on and have your right foot slide easily into stirrup. You should not be bending over and tweaking stirrup around to your foot. Your foot should stay in stirrup. You should have the correct size stirrup for your foot and for type of riding. These all have to do with your safety or your childs. Children need saddles that fit them. They should graduate from small to a size that fits them. Also If you have two riders sharing the same saddle and one is 5'5" and the other is 6' The shorter person will suffer because of all the excess stirrup leather and stirrup size. These are things to think about. I have some photos that show changes. MAKE SURE THAT YOU READ WHAT IS SAID ABOUT EACH PHOTO.

I had the saddle on the right come in for cleaning, conditioning, repairs and finish. The saddle on the left came in and they wanted breaching and crouper rings put on it. I started working on it and thought this is just like the other saddle but this one has been used a lot.

Saddles in shop

Today I was working on an older saddle and installing breaching rings and also crouper dee for a mule rider. Anyway I thought wait a minute this saddle is just like the one inside I am conditioning. They are probably the age but one has been used a lot and the other not. I believe that they may be made by JC Higgins. Here is picture of them.

SADDLE MAINTENANCE – Jennifer Paulson - Paulson Saddlery
Albany Oregon 541-791-5317/541-619-5115
Washing
Get the old sweat, dirt and mold off with warm water and soap. I use ivory bar soap, sponge and brush. You can use saddle soap or glycerin bar soap, but make sure you rinse the suds off or it will dry yellow in any leather tooling and carving.
Storing Equipment
Store in a dry place, not hot or moist. Insulated tack rooms are great with small oil heater, light bulb or Dry as air or finished garages. I have and insulated tack and a wall heater that is on lowest setting. I have not had any mold since I did this. Sweaty blankets get dry. Horse trailers can be really bad for storage. Moisture from sweaty blankets is in your trailer. Have some dry as air or moisture collectors and watch for mold. Easy to stop when caught early.
Vinegar Recipe for mold or prevention on saddles and tack
1 cup water
1 cup White Vinegar
Other good products for restoring or maintenance:
*PURE Neatsfoot Oil – Use sparingly – just wipe on and let soak in. I often follow up Neatsfoot oil treatments the next day with Vinegar water wipe down. Heavy Oil attracts mold.
*Leather New - can be used as a cleaner or after saddle is cleaned. I use this on bridles and some saddles.
Lexol Conditioner – clean saddle followed by Lexol Conditioner.
Leather Therapy – The conditioner helps prevent mold and is a good restore product.
*Black Rock - Very good to use if saddle is really, really clean and dry. I rub it in lightly by hand
And let it dry a day and then you can buff with towel to soft luster. Does not attract dirt. Oregon Leather – Eugene or Portland
*Tan Kote - This is a saddle finish that I use only on new or fully cleaned and conditioned saddles that are dry and have no oily residue. Leather must Herman Oak or like skirting leather. Not for heavily oiled saddles or harness leather or latigo. Oregon Leather – Eugene or Portland
*Skidmore’s Leather Cream– Is another good product that I like to put on backs of fenders after cleaned. And lightly on stirrup leathers if they are drying. It is also good on areas of back cinches and breast collars that get sweaty. Some people do use it on saddle. I have done it to my own and hated the results. Leather was sticky and collected dust and grit when trail riding. It took a lot of scrubbing to get it off. To order Skidmore’s 360-379-6385
* The main products I use to clean and restore

[11/12/16]   I have an order going into Weaver Leather next week. I am offering customers a chance to purchase things at wholesale price so I can fill my order. This is not a tack wholesale catalog but saddle makers supplies. Cinches, back cinches, billets, latigoes, leather conditioning products, conchos, buckles, snaps, leather tools, leather, harness parts, lots and lots of things in this catalog.
call me to see catalog. Jennifer 541-619-5115

Remember seeing this seat? A before and after.

Does your ankles and knees hurt when you ride? Does your stirrup leather hurt you? Can you adjust them easily?
I do a fender and stirrup modification and a twist and wrap. This is like a night and day difference. Do not be in pain any more.

Saddle cleaning and conditioning 10% off for the rest of 2016.

This is a thorough clean, oil and finish.

Custom Saddle made.

This is a nice old saddle that needed a new seat. Cantle binding refused to come off the usually way in one piece.Saddle seat was oiled and sanded to remove duck tape residue. That took awhile.
This saddle took quite awhile for me. Injured shoulder and collar bone three years ago and it still is not right. And hurts. Saddle was in shop for a year. Worked on it off and on. More off than on.
It came out nice.

[08/23/16]   Well, the Cantle is winning, cut top of finger pretty good. Good thing knife is really sharp or it would have hurt a lot. Second finger about ½ inch long at angle between first and second joint. It did not bleed for a few seconds and then it started flowing petty good as I was getting piece of blue painters tape out to cover. So had to come in house and wash blood and hold pressure on it for a bit. Then I put the blue tape on it. I went back out to work and was amazed at the blood in my shop. Blood is very staining to new leather. So I cleaned that up. So many people would have been off to the doctor for this cut. Just to be cleaned, and wrapped or glued. Blue tape works for me. Still working on damn cantle. Taking break about at halfway mark. New tool I bought for retrieving tread is nice. $50 nice. So far I have not polked my fingers with awl. New tool helps prevent that, but it can still happen and will.
