For those of you who haven’t heard, today the OSAA initially decided to postpone the state tournament at Gill Coliseum, and then ultimately decided to cancel the remainder of the 4A, 5A, and 6A tournaments all together.
While I respect the decisions that have been made to ensure the health and safety of everybody, I am sick for our nine seniors whose high-school basketball careers are now completed, and for the rest of our varsity team who will no longer have the opportunity to compete with them. It was one of the tougher conversations I’ve had to have; there's no handbook for that one. I know that many 4A, 5A, and 6A coaches of both girls and boys programs in Oregon that woke up this morning preparing for a game feel the same way. The same can be said for all of the college basketball players, seniors, and programs across the country who received similar news.
Last June, we sat around a bonfire in Seaside and set some high goals for this season, allowed ourselves to become vulnerable with one another, and prepared a blueprint for the journey that ultimately led us to a 20-6 season, a home playoff win against Parkrose, and earned a trip to the state tournament. WOW! As I told our seniors around the table this afternoon, I refuse to allow this state tournament and the last couple of hours to define this season. We’ve accomplished so much as basketball players, students, young men, and together as a family. We've had a lot of ups and downs individually, but we began to peak as a team last Saturday at the perfect time. We’ve grown on and off the court, all of our seniors are on pace to graduate in June, and our younger players are in a great position to move the program forward into the future.
My only disappointment is that our team did not have the opportunity to step on the court this morning to earn a piece of hardware that would remain in this school forever. And while I know how important this week was to our players, their legacy won’t be compromised because of the decisions made today.
As a coach, you’re never completely prepared to say goodbye to your seniors. As a senior, you’re never prepared to say goodbye to the game. Today has been hard.
I will send out information soon about banquet plans. Our school-wide winter sports awards ceremony that was scheduled for Monday evening has been postponed, but I would like to plan a basketball-specific banquet sometime soon to celebrate the successes of all three of our teams this season.
Thank you to all of our players and parents for everything this season.
- Coach Tim Matuszak
A disappointing way end to one of the most successful seasons in school history. Thankful to our nine seniors for their dedication to the program, and to me as their Head Coach. I am forever grateful.
After consulting with schools and venue partners, the OSAA is canceling all remaining Winter State Championships; more information to follow.
[03/12/20] Today’s state playoff game has been postponed. Has to do with the Pac-12 canceling their tournament and the availability of their facilities. The OSAA is working on a new location and date for the tournament to continue. I will update as I know more.
See you tonight!!!

Huge road win tonight against North Salem! Go RedHawks!
ALBANY, Oregon -- The South Albany boys rolled to a 69-49 Mid-Willamette Conference home win against the Central Panthers on a night that honored nine senior RedHawks.
South Albany (17-5) came out strong with an 18-10 lead after the 1st quarter, and a 36-26 lead at the half. The RedHawks buckled down defensively in the 3rd quarter, holding Central to only eight points and extended their lead to 53-34 going into the 4th quarter.
The RedHawks had eight different players contribute to their scoring attack.
Ayden Foster had a double-double with a game-high 19 points and 13 rebounds. Isaiah Gilliam contributed 15 points with 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Evan Benson pitched in 13 points with two 3-pointers. Chase Mello had eight points in the 1st half, with six of those coming from behind the arc early in the 1st quarter. Rounding out the scoring was McGlothan (6), Mercado (4), Worthen (2), and LaDelle (2).
Defensively, McGlothan found three steals, Caleb Cosler corralled four rebounds, and Kaleo Sugioka grabbed five rebounds. Sugioka also dished out four assists on the evening.
There were hustle plays to be found all over the floor on Tuesday night. 14 RedHawks contributed to the stat sheet on senior night.
As a team, South Albany scored 22 points off of 18 turnovers. The most impressive stat of the night were the 16 assists that the RedHawks accompanied with their 27 made field goals.
With the win on Tuesday night, South Albany secured their playoff berth on March 7th. They carry their 3-game winning streak into Salem on Friday evening to play North Salem (at South Salem High School). Their regular season schedule concludes next Tuesday at Corvallis.

Our program is running another Coach’s Salsa fundraiser just in time for SUPER BOWL SUNDAY!!
We ran an incredibly successful fundraiser last June to kick off our summer, and we couldn’t think of a better time to offer you a chance to support both a local business and our boys basketball program!!
If you’ve tried their stuff, you know how good it is. "Coach's Salsa" produces all of their vegetables on their family farm, and package all of their products at their FDA-licensed food production facility in the Eola Hills. Coach's Salsa is now being offered in 18 local stores, 41 restaurants and delis, and will quickly be expanding into 1400 stores across the western United States!
Flavorful Mild, Zesty Medium, Savory Hot, and Pico de Gallo are the flavors available through our fundraiser.
We would love for you to consider helping the program and making a purchase. Please find a boys basketball player in our program to place an order! We will be accepting orders between now and January 20th so that we can have orders delivered to you the week before Super Bowl Sunday!
Thank you for helping our kids and continuing to support not only OUR program, but Coach Risen and his family, who after 20 years in education and coaching, continue to find ways to give back to the youth in our communities.

JV @ LBCC - 5:00pm
Varsity @ LBCC - 6:30pm
Parents and Players,
As you are all probably aware by now, there was a fire yesterday evening in the new construction portion of the auxilary gym. Although the fire was contained in a small area of the new gym and a new classroom, our current gym was completely engulfed in smoke until the Albany Fire Department was able to arrive and begin ventilation.
I'm working with our Athletic Director and Administration on getting answers about what the next few weeks look like for our basketball program regarding practices and games. For the foreseeable future, our gym will not be accessible. Freshman will continue their practice routine at Calapooia Middle School. The JV & Varsity will be moving to alternate locations. Specifically, we are working on practice arrangements for the next two days- which I will share as soon as I know.
The location of our game on Friday is TBD, although it won't be here at South Albany High School. Whether or not we move it to a different location here in town, or postpone it all together is still up in the air. Again, I will feed you information as soon as I receive it. I will hold a brief team meeting at lunch today with players from both our boys and girls programs to update them on the information I have at that point regarding practice for the next two days.
While we are facing a little bit of adversity this morning and our routines may be affected for the next couple of weeks, our team goals and mind-set must remain the same. We will remind our guys that we must focus on the things that we can control, and that every day is another opportunity to get better.
Please email me if you have any questions and I will answer them the best that I can, as quickly as I can.
