Getting stronger isn’t just about lifting more weight, it’s also about building balance & stability throughout your body so that you can avoid injury.
*
Here are 3 exercises you can plug into your PFP (personal fitness program) to help build stability through your shoulders.
*
1️⃣ KETTLEBELL FARMER CARRY: Farmer carries will activate nearly every muscle of your body, helping you build stability & stability. An added bonus is that they’ll get your 💓 pumping for a decent calorie burn as well. To get the greatest benefit, be sure to grab a pair of kettlebells or dumbbells that are CHALLENGING to hold onto. Going to light will eliminate the benefits, and going to heavy will just put you at risk of injury. Once you’ve got the weights in your hands, you’ll want to focus on bracing your core, not allowing your ribs to flare out. Pull your shoulders back (NOT UP!) as if you’re holding a tennis ball between your shoulder blades. Walk slowly (or march) trying not to let the weights bounce against your hips. Carry for a set time or distance, looking to build upon it each week.

2️⃣ SINGLE KETTLEBELL RACK CARRY: The single KB rack carry is a great unilateral exercise to strengthen your core and build shoulder strength & stability. Clean a kettlebell of challenging weight up to a rack position, brace your core, and slowly walk (or march) forward for 15 - 20 feet, then attempt to reverse direction and walk backward. Focus on NOT allowing your body to lean to one side, keeping your core braced, and keeping your elbow tucked to your ribs (NOT FLARED OUT TO THE SIDE) as you keep your wrist neutral. Walk for time or distance, looking to build upon it each week.

3️⃣ SINGLE KETTLEBELL WAITER CARRY: The single KB waiter carry is another great unilateral exercise to strengthen your core and build shoulder strength & stability. Don’t attempt to do this move unless you’ve mastered the single KB rack carry above ⬆️ and you’ll probably want to start with a lighter weight until you’ve developed the strength & stability to keep your elbow locked out the entire time. You’re going to clean the kettlebell up into a rack position, then press it overhead (or push press if you’re going heavy). You want to make sure your elbow and wrist are locked out in a neutral position. If they begin to bend, you’re going to heavy. Brace your core and slowly walk (or march) forward for 15 - 20 feet, then attempt to reverse direction and walk backward. Focus on NOT allowing your body to lean to one side, keeping your core braced, keeping your elbow & wrist in a neutral position, and keeping your ribs tucked (NOT FLARED). Walk for time or distance, looking to build upon it each week.

5️⃣ Ways To Deadlift 💪

We’re all different, which means the same exercise may not work for all of us. Using different variations of a movement allows us to perform & gain strength in a much greater capacity, in a way that will help us avoid injury.

Here are 5️⃣ different variations we use with our clients to help them experience success and get stronger while avoiding pain and injury ...

1️⃣ SUMO DEADLIFT: Start with a wide stance and arms inside your legs. Hips will start a bit lower then a conventional deadlift.

2️⃣ CONVENTIONAL DEADLIFT: Start with a narrow stance and arms outside your legs. Hips will start between knees and shoulders and you’ll drive knees out into your arms to engage your posterior.

3️⃣ STAGGERED STANCE DEADLIFT: Great for developing unilateral balance. Place the toes of your back foot even with your front heel. Hips between knees and shoulders, drive through your front foot using back leg more for balance than power.

4️⃣ PAUSED DEADLIFT: Great for becoming stronger at the bottom of your pull, pause just below your knees for 2-3 seconds, then finish your pull as if you were doing a conventional deadlift.

5️⃣ SNATCH GRIP DEADLIFT: Great for developing grip strength and upper back strength. Because your torso will be starting much lower to the ground, you’ll drop your hips lower to start your pull.
