Jonathan Haggerty is a former ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion who makes things interesting with his tactical and strategic approach. Haggerty has relatively few fights to his name, and yet he won the 2019 ONE Flyweight Muay Thai Championship title against the more seasoned Sam-A.

Haggerty has an aggressive fighting style that involves a balanced mix of punches, elbows, and kicks. The Brit seems the type who learns and evolves with every match. His unique Muay Thai style makes him one of the more entertaining fighters to watch.

In Muay Thai, your footwork and posture are crucial to your movement, both in attack and defense. While standing straight and tall, you should also have a slight bend in your knees to facilitate better movement. This also aids in generating power and torque as it allows your hips to rotate freely with the movement of your back foot.

Your posture should be tight with your lead shoulder in line with the heel of your lead foot. This will ensure that you are in the right position to attack, as well as defend yourself from any incoming shots.


Jose Aldo was one of the most dominant UFC champions ever and he used his impressive Muay Thai to overwhelm his opponents.

His signature move is the brutal low kick he still has from training Muay Thai. That move indirectly enabled him to defeat so many of his opponents, as it limits movement and causes too much discomfort.

After losing to Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 278, he decided to part ways and pursue other combat sports. He is going to make his debut in boxing on Feb 10. Aldo will go down as not only one of the best Muay Thai fighters in the UFC, but as one of the best MMA fighters of all time.

This move is called the ! A sweep (or trip) is when you off-balance your opponent and they fall. This can be done in a variety of ways, from catching the leg or using body locks. This can also be done in different ranges.

Former UFC strawweight champion Jessica Andrade put on a stellar performance against Lauren Murphy this past weekend at UFC 283.

Andrade gauged the distance for a few moments in round 1 before ramping up the forward pressure. She kept Murphy off guard by landing a nice jumping front switch kick and several powerful punches. Murphy attempted to change levels by taking the fight to the mat and got a takedown, but Andrade was able to bring the fight back to standing level. Andrade was able to keep deflecting Murphy's attempts to take her down for the rest of the fight, leading to a unanimous 30-26 score from all judges.

This is a great example of an opponent trying to manipulate the fight by changing the levels. Always be on guard and look out for signs of potential takedowns.


Tyron "The Chosen One" Woodley gives great insight into how to handle adversity inside and outside the ring: “Fighting, especially at this level, is about getting through adversity. You position yourself mentally to go out and take on obstacles that stand in your way. In the Octagon and in life, you face tough situations and have every chance to quit, but the more adversity you push through, the more likely you are to be successful.”

When training in Muay Thai, a good defensive move to utilize when someone is throwing a low calf kick at your lead leg is a hinge check. This is when you hinge your lead leg at the knee, bending it, while picking up your foot, all the while keeping your position. This allows you to counter easter.

Khalil "The War Horse" Rountree Jr. is an American mixed martial artist who currently competes in the light heavyweight division of the UFC. Following his loss to Johnny Walker on a UFC Fight Night, Rountree actually traveled and lived in Thailand for several months to regroup and focus on Thai fundamentals. He came back in April 2109 ready to fight Eryk Anders at UFC 236.

Rountree utilized low kicks from both sides to nullify Anders movement. Once the threat of the low kick was established, he would incorporate this technique at the beginning or end of his combinations to deal damage and keep Anders guessing. In this fight, Rountree put on what is widely considered one of the purest Muay Thai performances in MMA.

Following a hardship, sometimes it is important to step away and refocus on fundamentals, that way you can address what needs adjustment.

Mirko Cro Cop - A Legend Retires |Insane High Kick Technique Breakdown 01/21/2023

One of the all-time greatest kickboxers in MMA history is Mirko "Cro Crop" Filipovic! He retired at the first of the year in 2019, but Filipovic finished his career 38-11. Of those 38 wins, 30 were decided by KO.

Mirko is known mainly for his "Cro Crop" signature move that featured a left high kick. During his time in the octagon, this move was so powerful, it was famously described as "right leg, hospital; left leg, cemetery."

Today we want to focus more on a technical term rather than a specific Muay Thai or Kickboxing move. In MMA, one of the most useful terms to familiarize yourself with is "feinting". A feint occurs when a fighter pretends to move in one way or direction with the intent of doing something completely different. Essentially, a deceptive or distracting move done solely to throw your opponent off.

For example, you might pretend to throw a punch or jab, but you miss contact on purpose to throw a low leg kick on the opposite side of your opponent. The possibilities of different feints are endless and of course vary depending on who you fight, so always continue to try new moves!

At the age of 4, Masvidal's father was arrested and imprisoned for 18 years. It wasn't until Jorge was 13 that his mother even told him the truth about his father. In the years before he officially met Masvidal Sr, Jorge was in and out of fights one of which actually lead him to the hospital due to his ear drum exploding and gravel being embedded in his face from getting stomped.

As Jorge began building his relationship with his father, he began to realize if he did not change, his fate would be similar! In 2003, Jorge got connected with Kembo Slice where his fighting career officially started - in the backyard!

Struggling to help his mom and make ends meet by himself, Masvidal would fight twice a day for extra cash to help him pay rent and when he couldn't, he was forced to sleep in his car. Today, Jorge has HUGE wins against Nate Diaz, Darren Till, and Ben Askren to show us that no matter your struggles, there is a spot for everyone to participate in the sport!


Marie Ruumet is an Estonian kickboxer and Muay Thai fighter whose ferocious strikes unfold with the grace of a ballet dancer. She can mount a swift attack with a combination of powerful elbows, knees, and kicks. Her speed, reach, and technique combine into a devastating blitz that keeps you glued to your screen.

She is a strategic fighter who enters the ring with a plan and sets about destroying her opponent’s defenses. Ruumet will then switch up her fighting style to keep her opponent guessing. She is also flexible enough to counter and convert most strikes from her opponent. So far, Ruumet is a part of ONE Championship and seems to have a bright future ahead of her.

Knee strikes can be your ticket to overcoming the challenge of any opponent, outside or inside of the clinch.

From short-range knee strikes to flying knee variants, the sheer power and effectiveness of these strikes have led to many mixed martial artists basing their standup game almost exclusively on Muay Thai. Knees can be big business inside the ring or cage.


Steven "Wonderboy" Thompson is a former undefeated full-contact kickboxer who now competes in the welterweight division in the UFC. Last December, Thompson took on fellow welterweight fighter Kevin Holland in what Michael Bisping described as "what might have been the best fight we've ever seen."

Holland is known for having an incredible 81 inch reach and one-shot KO power, so Thompson had to work around that after coming off of two losses. At the end of round 1, Thompson switched up his stance from his normal southpaw to orthodox to try and combat Holland's incredible striking power. This almost cost him the fight as he took a huge right hand from Holland.

Thompson then switched back to southpaw and utilized his left high kicks to attack Holland's right hand and keep it occupied so he could deal some damage, ultimately breaking Holland's hand and TKO-ing him in the 4th round.

This is a great example trial and error, but doing it with intelligence. Thompson tried a different stance in hopes to throw Holland off, but it ended up throwing him off. So, he switched back to his normal stance with some adjustments and ended up taking the fight.

In Muay Thai and Kickboxing one fundamental move you should familiarize yourself with is low kicks. Low kicks can either be executed from the lead or rear.

When throwing a lead low kick, you may not be able to generate as much power, but what you may lack in power you make up for in speed and shock factor. These kicks are often insignificant in scoring but they are great for throwing your opponent's balance off and setting up other strikes.

Charles Oliveira's journey from the favelas of Brazil to the lightweight throne is nothing short of a miracle! At a young age, Oliveira was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and heart murmurs. The doctors even said that he might not be able to walk again and may need to depend on a wheelchair.

After undergoing treatment for several years, Oliveira was cleared from the hospital but was advised not to do any heavy physical activity. At the age of 12, Oliveira was introduced to Brazilian jiu-jitsu and started his journey to become a mixed martial artist.

This journey led him to the UFC. After spending more than a decade in the promotion, he finally got his hands on the lightweight title when he defeated Michael Chandler at UFC 262!


Since 2010, Alistair Overeem has been known as one of the greatest kickboxers in fighting history after winning the K-1 World Grand Prix title!

He then switched gears to UFC where he ended his career in 2021 with a record of 47-19-0.
