The Princess Anne Hunt (VA) took time off from equestrian activities during the hot month of July to enjoy four local vineyards. They enjoyed great wine and food while overlooking the historic James River at Upper Shirley Vineyards in Charles City County. The vineyard was started by Suzy and Tayloe Dameron, who are both riding members of Princess Anne. The property also serves as a beautiful fixture for the hunt. Looking ahead to the coming season, all interested riders are welcome to attend the Introduction to Foxhunting Weekend September 7-9. Register at www.tinyurl.com/PAHClinic
Attendees at June's Biennial Seminar at Mount Vernon enjoyed learning from Philip Smucker, a fifth great-grandnephew of George Washington. Smucker spoke about foxhunting's role in the development of the first president's character, and joined us through the weekend for informal discussions about history and world events. Watch for excerpts from his book, Riding with George: Sportsmanship & Chivalry, in the next issue of Covertside magazine.

If you have had the good fortune never to see a split-open helmet, here is an interesting illustration from one of wonderful sponsors, Charles Owen. We appreciate their support - and their continuing research into safer helmet design!
Check out this fantastic sketch of a Charles Owen helmet! We design all of our helmets so that the peak is flexible and will absorb impact. Our helmets also feature offset ventilation holes to provide superior airflow while preventing horse studs from being able to penetrate through the helmet.
Keep in mind that, per British Eventing rules, a jockey skull is required on cross-country! #safety365 #charlesowen #safetysaturday
Lowcountry Hunt Arnie '18 may be one to watch, especially in low scenting conditions ;) Thanks to Liz Brecht Howard for sharing this video of huntsman Tony Gammell and obedient (but curious) hounds walking out.
