Great day on the Juan!

Good day on the San Juan River!

A nice rainbow trout from the fabled San Juan River in New Mexico. It is easily fished out of featured town Durango, Colorado. The section below Navajo Dam in NM is one of the most famous tailwater fisheries in the country—and the river above the reservoir is no slouch either… The San Juan is one of the largest rivers in the southwest at 385 miles long and with a drainage area of nearly 25,000 square miles. It begins in the San Juan Mountains east of Durango and terminates at Lake Powell--the outlet of which is the beginning of another famous tailwater trout fishery—the Lees Ferry section of the Colorado River. As for Durango, it is out favorite town in the southwest. Picture courtesy of Duranglers Flies and Supplies (970-385-4081, or [email protected])

Majestic Enchantment Fly Fishing on The San Juan

Forkie - 2X2 Buck Deer

September 15th, 2014

As a result of higher river flows in the San Juan River Basin, the Bureau of Reclamation has scheduled a decrease in the release from Navajo Reservoir to 500 cubic feet per second (cfs) tonight, Monday, September 15th, beginning at 11:00 p.m. Releases are made for the authorized purposes of the Navajo Unit, and to attempt to maintain a target base flow through the endangered fish critical habitat reach of the San Juan River (Farmington to Lake Powell).

The San Juan River Basin Recovery Implementation Program recommends a target base flow of between 500 cfs and 1,000 cfs through the critical habitat area. Reclamation is targeting the lower end of this range in an attempt to recover reservoir storage. The target base flow is calculated as the weekly average of gaged flows throughout the critical habitat area.

This is Why you Sling Mice for Trout | Hatch Magazine - Fly Fishing, etc.

I've been wanting to try a mouse pattern on the San Juan. In a recent post, oh-so cleverly titled Mousing Accomplished, I related how my pledge to catch a trout on a deer hair mouse pattern while on a brief summer tour of Alaska was saved at nearly the last opportunity by a stroke of good luck. The good news is, my experience was entirely atypical, thanks…

Fishing Report for June 25, 2014

Tuesday tip of the week. Now that the water visibility is considerably better and the increased flow should start to clear out the little remaining gunk, the opportunity to fish dry flies should just get better by the day. Unfortunately what also comes with the clearer water is more selective trout. If you’re like me and don’t have superhuman vision, you probably have a hard time keeping track of the size 26 or 28 midge you could barely tie onto 7x tippet to let alone see floating in the current 12 feet away from you. The trick is to use a spotter fly as an indicator of sorts. Now most people fish the larger spotter fly as the lead fly and the small fly as the trailer but what tends to happen when you cast, is the small fly coils up in a ball of 7x tippet right in front of the larger fly, which isn’t going to fool a large wise San Juan trout. Try using a larger fly such as a midge cluster or fore and aft as the trailer and the miniscule midge as the lead. Your tippet will straighten out when you cast and any splash or disturbance between the big fly and your leader you’ll know to set the hook. As a side benefit, you’ll most likely get strikes on the spotter fly too.
