Geez, we are so lucky to have this lil lady on the Sirena Squad! If you don’t know her yet, she is a staple of Sirena Studio and she is adored both as an instructor and as a performer🌸

Meet Lorena!

Lorena has been dancing since 2010. She fell in love with belly dance because of the beautiful culture and community that surrounds it, and the connection it has with the music. Lorena is mostly known for her theatrical (usually humorous) expressions, balancing swords or pots while she dances, and pushing the limits with technique and musical interpretation. She loves nature (hiking, camping, gardening, etc.), all things spooky & macabre, and of course hanging out with her pets & loved ones!

Today we’d like to Spotlight our amazing student, Kitty Hurst.

Kitty has committed to her dance practice by being part of our student company, Mermaid Muse. This means that she is at the studio for multiple classes per week on top of troupe rehearsals. She is kind, smart, and a delight to be around. We couldn’t be happier to have her part of the Sirena familia.💖

“I dance because so many things cannot be expressed in words. Dance is my ticket to sanity, my champagne-overflowing celebration of joy, my wailing-grief morning call for all that is lost and painful in this world. Plus --it's fun!
One of the reasons I moved back to New Mexico was the supportive dance community at Sirena Studio. These rockstar ladies are movers and shakers in the world; strong women who support each other, push each other to new heights, and cheer each other on no matter what. I adore the endless creativity, the silliness, the stability of the community --it's truly a dance family.” -Kitty

Let us introduce Adriana Sandoval, a Sirena instructor since the day we opened, and the director of two Sirena troupes, Raqzia and Mermaid Muse!!🤩

“Adriana has been dancing a total of 26 years between 3 main styles: Mexican Folklórico (9 years), Flamenco (5 years) and Middle Eastern dance (currently 12 years and going). What Adriana loves most about Middle Eastern music and dance is the wide range of rhythms, styles and emotions it conveys. Adriana loves that Middle Eastern dance stems from social, folk dancing for anyone to dance and enjoy at events such as birthdays, weddings and other celebrations but also can be part of a professional stage production with rehearsed choreographies.

Adriana is most known for dancing raqs sharqi style and Egyptian folk dance styles. She also loves to perform and teach American Cabaret style where props are incorporated ranging from veils, fan veils, isis wings, finger cymbals, and swords.

When Adriana isn’t dancing she loves spending time with her family including her husband, Adrian and two sons, Tomás and Gabriel. She also loves teaching her 3rd grade bilingual students as she’s been teaching in Albuquerque Public Schools since 2003. She also enjoys cooking family meals!”

Happy Sunday! Today, we’d like to spotlight Oakley Blasdel. She is a dancer in our student troupe, Wicked Muse Dance Project, and is currently working on her very first dance solo! We are so proud of you, Oakley. Thank you for sharing your talent, kindness, and humor with the Sirena familia💖

“I dance because it’s FUN! I started belly dancing in my 30s and was immediately hooked. I never imagined what a grand adventure learning to dance would be! I love how the movements feel on my body, love feeling the music in my body. Dance has expanded so many horizons, to new cultures, new music, new people, new feelings and experiences. Dancing has enriched my life in countless ways. I got started at Sirena because I went to see their production of “Peter Pan” and was completely enthralled. I truly spent the entire show grinning from ear to ear, so I was inspired to go back to dancing after a number of years off. I’m so glad I did!!

It’s not often you find a place that is a welcoming, encouraging, positive environment, but Sirena Studios is that place. The people that dance there are so generous in spirit and support each other on and off the stage. Dancing with Sadie and Lorena and being in Wicked Muse has been such a gift! I enjoy having two teachers with different styles and different approaches to dance. Lorena has a very fluid approach to movement that really speaks to me, and Sadie has a way of guiding me to the edge of my comfort zone and beyond with a complete “you got this” attitude while she gently pushes me forward. So often, I leave the studio thinking “Wow, look at me conquering that thing that scared me!” -Oakley

This photo sums up Sadie pretty well. She loves pink, always wishes she was at the beach, and she’s a cheeseball😂💖🌊

If you haven’t met the owner of Sirena Studio, here’s a little bit about her:

Sadie took her first belly dance class when she was 13 years old. She had always dreamed of being a dancer but didn’t think she had the right body type for it, nor the experience of ballet classes since *insert toddler age*. Discovering belly dancers who were all different ages and sizes reawakened her dance dreams, and she is forever grateful.

Whether it is Raqs Sharqi or Fusion Belly Dance, Sadie loves the music, the way the moves feel on her body, and of course, the costumes! Belly dancing makes her feel confident, beautiful, and strong. The community she gets to dance with is also a plus!

When Sadie isn’t dancing, she is running Sirena Studio (this takes up most of her time), traveling (mostly to Oregon or Mexico), reading a book in her backyard, making weird movies, playing with her dog (Ewok), or enjoying a beer with family and friends.

This week, we want to give a shout out to Alexandra Padilla. She is a dancer in our student troupe, Mermaid Muse, as well as the Sirena Studio yoga instructor. We are so proud of you, Alex, for your consistent class attendance, for your technique that is always improving, and for your most recent solo. Keep up the amazing work!💖

“I dance to keep myself sane. It is by far my favorite form of self-care and has allowed me to move through and process my emotions. Dance keeps me moving through life, no matter how hard life can get. Dance is my medicine!
I love Sirena! They have created an amazing community of dancers who support one another. The Sirena community has become my second family. Also, all the teachers are amazing! They are great at breaking down each move, and also challenging their students.”

Have you ever dreamed of being a dancer, but thought that you couldn’t?

Maybe you thought you’re too old to start?

that you don’t have the right body?

Have you told yourself that you have no sense of rhythm, or that you have two left feet?

We’ve heard all these reasons why people feel like they shouldn’t learn to dance.

But the truth is that belly dance (Raqs Sharqi) is for every body. It is for You who thinks you can’t do it until you lose 20 more pounds (yes, we’ve heard this), and it is for You who didn’t grow up dancing ballet (neither did the owner at Sirena Studio).

In fact, belly dance is the first dance form that @sadieadairdancer ever learned.

If there is any part of you that wants to be a dancer, the Sirena instructors are here to help you discover that part of you.

Let’s make 2021 the year you try something new! Join us this Sunday for a free mini class, online or in person. Dm us to register💖

At Sirena, our motto is “Make Waves with your Hips!” Will you join us?
