Had a wonderful time at your class yesterday! Thank you so much for dedication and kindness to teaching your craft.
Improve your paddling with an inexpensive homemade paddle / kayak ergometer. You can see video of it in action at https://diypaddleergometers.wixsite.com/build. You will also have the option of buying detailed plans for $8 Cdn. ($6 U.S.). It’s a great way to own a very functional and affordable piece of training equipment. Being out on the water is always best, but an erg can help with conditioning and technique on the days you can't get out.
Kelly's passion for kayaking is evident. He has a genuine love for helping kayakers at various levels improve their skills in a variety of real-world situations.Kelly is an excellent communicator. His instructions are easy to follow, and easy to retain. He allows ample opportunity to practice skills like how to read the river, upstream and downstream navigation techniques, and planning maneuvers in advance. Kelly gives his students individual attention at the level they need to improve while the entire group is immersed in the fun environment he creates! I highly recommend him to anyone wanting to take their kayaking skill to the next level.
We have MST Adventures, LLC out here every week AND New Mexico Kayak Instruction, Inc.

I loved kayaking with my family last Saturday for level 1 and 2 classes. My 2 boys ages 14 and 10 picked it up so fast. They were really tired and hungry by the end of the first class. They worked/ played really hard. We will be doing more kayaking as a family!!

My husband and I took the level 2 class in the afternoon. In spite of the crazy wind and rain, we really enjoyed the class. I have never seen such a beautiful rainbow anywhere in the world as we did floating down the Rio Grande, in New Mexico on Saturday! Jackson, MJ, and Eric gave excellent and clear instruction. I enjoyed learning from them. They were positive and encouraging.

I'm so excited to be taking the level 3 class with my husband this weekend! One of the last weekends on the river before it is too cold and snowy!

I highly recommend taking these classes!!
Wanted to see when you are going to have your schedule for this year's Rio Grande kayak trips? We are looking forward to going again!!
Ready to Launch
My first Kayak experience was a 2016 Balloon Fiesta tour with New Mexico Kayak, Kelly Gossett and his crew of expert guides. They do an amazing and professional job of providing instruction and assistance to all of the group before launching and on the river.
Had a great experience with you guys last weekend. Here's video of a splash and dash we got to see. Thanks!!

Another day at the office. So much fun it hardly feels like we're working! Want to get out one the water and learn something new? Whitewater is easier than you think, but it's not intuitive. When we have speed in the right direction, whitewater is actually pretty easy. When we have speed in the wrong direction, whitewater can be pretty hard. And when we have no speed at all, we're at the mercy of the current. Learn the basics without the distraction of currents through fun games like Ultimate Kayak Frisbee or Duct Tape Tag. Next class is June 2 or June 10 at Sandia Lakes & Recreation Center.

Learning to roll a kayak isn't as hard as you think. It's a few simple laws of physics, or muscle movements that get the boat underneath of you and utilize the buoyancy of the boat to do the hard work. The common misconception is to get on top of the boat, which uses a completely different set of muscles. By getting the boat underneath of you, you utilize hundreds of pounds of buoyancy of the kayak, which can lift you up out of the water like a feather. We really don't even need the paddle. The use of a flotation bag simulated the mechanics of getting the kayak underneath of you. In this clip you can see both the right way and the wrong way; one way is effortless and the other is labored.

Can a pro-kayaker paddle 300 m upstream?

So much of what we teach in kayaking is counter-intuitive. Who would guess that, in some cases, the path of least resistance is upstream? Simple laws of physics. Attainments are a great way of calibrating your skills without increasing the risk. Most people can float down a class I rapid with no problem. But can they paddle up a class I rapid? Doing so requires class III skills, but only class I risk. Paddling up a class II often requires class IV skills, but only class II risk. If you'd like to learn more about paddling smarter, not harder, join us for one of our Level 1, 2, 3 or 4 clinics to improve your skills. With proper instruction, you'll learn how to calibrate your skills, so you'll know exactly when it's time to try harder whitewater.

Nearly a decade ago, New Mexico Kayak Instruction began hosting these Open House paddling sessions as a place for our students to get practice outside of class. Sometimes we have fun games like Ultimate Kayak Frisbee or Kayak Polo, SUP Kickball or SUPLacrosse. Other times we have private lessons. We often have first-timers who just want to spend time relaxing on the water, or scout groups who want to expose their kids to something new but structured learning in a safe environment. Over time, it evolved into more of a community event and soon became a welcoming venue for people with disabilities. In 2012 Sandia Lakes & Recreation Center asked us to bring these programs to their amazing venue. Today is a classic example of everything a healthy, active paddling community should be; some were here to practice, others were here to learn, some were here to play games, many were here to volunteer for Kayak New Mexico, Inc. 501c3 adaptive kayaking program. 😊

Cheakamus HuckFest, Whistler

One can overcome a lot of fear, and build huge confidence by accepting three simple words: "It's Just Water!"

When we see the river for what it is, instead of our self-imposed projections, we can learn a lot more about it -- and ourselves.

If this video stirs some emotion in you, ask yourself why?

It probably boils down to fear. Fear of what? The unknown. Can these variables be identified, risk calculated and fear removed? Absolutely.

When I watch this video, I see combinations of skill and confidence. The two go hand-in-hand. But they usually don't start on class V drops. They start with the fundamentals. In our Whitewater Weekend class, Common Sense Rescue class and more advanced classes, we spend a lot of time swimming rapids. Everything is 'challenge by choice' -- but the intent is to overcome fear by making educated decisions based on the laws of physics about what the river is telling us. Some drops are simply benign. Some fears are simply unwarranted.

And, as you can see in this video, they're having a ton of fun!

"It's Just Water!"

Why Going Bigger Makes the Whitewater World Smaller 10/19/2016

Why Going Bigger Makes the Whitewater World Smaller

I thought this was a great read, and embodies a core philosophy here at NMKI.

"Whitewater kayaking is one of the smallest adventure sports there is. The Nantahala Outdoor Center estimates there are roughly 40,000 regular whitewater kayakers in the U.S., defined as people who own a kayak and paddle once a year. Compare that to 20 million skiers and two million rock climbers and you realize just how small our clan really is.

One reason for our minority is the huge attrition coming from bad experiences. Plenty of people think kayaking looks fun and they try it out. However, they are set up for failure by expecting success with little preparation, and dealing with fear using artificial bravado.

Consider the guy whose friends take him on the local run (“Dude, it’s easy!”). He flips, flails upside down, gasping and scared. He has no skills but they say, “Get back on the horse!”

Or the anxious intermediate woman looking at her first class IV. She doesn’t have confidence but her friends urge her, “Step it up, go bigger!”

For every person I know who paddled whitewater for a season, many more have told me they got scared and quit. No wonder our sport is so small......"

Why Going Bigger Makes the Whitewater World Smaller Just because you don't chase big rapids or waterfalls, doesn't mean you're not a true paddler.

People tell us they've lived in Albuquerque their whole life and never knew they could kayak in the Rio Grande, and how beautiful the river really is when removed from the hustle and bustle of a busy city.

Aside from a few homes, we see nothing but stunning views of the Sandia Mountains and assorted wildlife and waterfoul as we paddle through 10 miles of one of the largest urban forests in the world. Great Blue Heron are seen year around near the river and we often see Snowy Egrets, Cooper's Hawks and Great Horned Owls, among others.
