It's been 16 weeks since the pandemic began its steady narrowing of our lives. For many, our noticing has collapsed inward to the boxes of our homes, our "pods", our cars, our computers, our phones. It's important to note that narrowing and hypervigilance are a reflex in a threat response. And, there's plenty to perceive as a threat out there; the precipice is real.

And, what if we looked up, away, around, behind, through? What if we took note of being moved? This week I need to crawl out of the boxes; like our turtle, Paprika, in the backyard adventuring I deeply need to be "moved". I know intellectually that mobilizing when I feel stress helps me to see beyond my boxes, but sometimes I need help. Looking, noticing and being moved often manifests for me an awareness of something greater than me, a connection to spirit, more wholeness, something glimmering!

So join me in tracking things that "move" you, that bring you out of that reflexive restriction (the felt sense of breathlessness even panic) and document all the moments you feel "moved", literally, figuratively, energetically. Is it watching a bird, cooking a meal, talking to a friend, moving your body? Track these items perhaps in a "movement" journal. They are your medicine and things to return to in moments of constriction. Share with me those things if you like.

Last week we focused on including rest (not freeze or dissociation) – attentive rest into our radiant and super hot days. It was an invitation to notice (that's what Nia is all about). The variation on the theme for this week will be a focus on our eyes with the intention of expanding our view/viewpoints to reduce the sensation of constriction.

JULY RADIATES
Radiation is the emission of energy as waves through space: the heat of the sun, the reflective beauty of a full moon, the very existence of the seen world. We're enduring to one another as the very nature of radiance. Visible light, radiating off of you, gives me the perception of your physical realness. Awesome, eh?

At the top of summer's heat we experience the stretching out of our days into bright, searing and often epic epochs. And, like some long summer days, the radius and trajectory of "Covid" days feels unbearable, even endless, at times. So, I'm curious about how to reframe this peregrination as something to be embraced. If we allow the drawing out of time, the stretching of our molecules (Listen here: https://youtu.be/89YoFyTdayA) to be sensed as restful, will new perceptions arrive?

Perhaps a radiant repose in July can be a time to charge our "soma"solar panels to sustain us through the dropping of leaves. Given the space of deliberate waiting will we perceive/receive what arrives, differently?

To enhance this curiosity, over the next 40 days I'm participating in a course called Daring to Rest, a "rest and social justice-informed journey through the inner terrain that includes deep rest, healing circles and embodied conversations, using long and short guided rest practices, to experience the nourishing power of lying down to wake up". I'm treasuring having the time and space to explore new embodied education over the past 3 1/2 months even in the uncertainty of other parts of life.

So, as next week heats up with ferocity, let's see if we can welcome a perception shift of all that radiation and rest provides. See you "on the dance floor"!

*How to have a great ZoomNIA class*
Be sure you have download Zoom before class starts (best viewed on a computer/laptop or TV) at zoom.us/download.
Sign in a bit early; you'll begin in a waiting room, and then I'll admit you to class. Your mic will be muted before and during class. After class, I'll unmute everyone so we can say hello (use Gallery view to see others!
Put everything except the device upon which you're to stream class on Airplane mode and turn off other programs (mail, messages, your browser) so your computer is running only Zoom.
Use a cable to hardwire your device into your modem if your WiFi isn’t strong enough.
If during class you don't have a good connection or don't want others to see you dance, turn off your video.
Clear your dancing space. You can hook up your device to a large screen TV and/or to an external speaker. Make sure the volume is turned up.
Pay attention to how you move in this new venue, your house. Moving on a non-sprung floor asks us to be even more aware of new sensations and making adjustments to moves to meet your body's way in your space. Maybe shoes are necessary, maybe a rug will work better. Remember to choose joy for YOU!
You've asked about payment...check my website for the information at http://www.erindamour.com

Missing you all. Keep finding ways to move.

Being stuck inside can start to make some feel like caged animals. Don’t forget to ask yourself “what have I fed the animal inside me”. Living in our minds only at this time will be toxic. This self isolation thing isn’t ending soon. What do a wild cats (poor creatures) in a zoo do when they get restless and feel trapped. They pace. They are on alert. They might start harming themselves. Or, they might shut down. Remember to feed the animal in you.
Crawl.
Get on hands and knees and move.
Roll around on the ground.
Shake.
Make sounds as you move to move the wildness around in you.
Stay wild in captivity.

🌏Nia Friends! Here's an update on how to keep moving in community. The immune-boosting benefits of moving together is hugely important and can help us convert the activation energy of anxiety and stress.🌏

TOMORROW!
🌳🌵Sunday, March 15 10:30 a.m. *Quiet Community Walk* at UNM North Golf Course (Stanford Dr. between Mountain and Constitution. Park in the law library lot.)🌳🌵

*How it will unfold*
We'll meet and circle (no hand-holding) to create the space.
Wear comfortable walking shoes. (The full loop is about 2 miles)
Greet each other with Namaste 🙏, smiles and eye contact and begin our walk...maybe we'll stop and shimmy at a few cottonwoods for giggles.

Bring water. Bring your dog on a leash.

Do not come if you are sick or believe you may have an exposure risk (to COVID or any virus!)

MONDAY!
💃Monday 12pm classes (beginning 3/16) at Lumen will go on at this point. 🤗THE GOOD NEWS🤗 is that if you've already purchased at class card with me for Studio Sway classes they WILL be valid at Lumen. They are increasing their sanitation and also do not want you to come if you are sick or believe you may have an exposure risk.🕺

Remember, life, by nature, is fluid and can change last minute.👣

Shift Happens: How movement makes me a better person

I was working at the university when a colleague said to me one day, “You have to come to Nia! I think you’ll love it.” That was over 15 years ago. My first steps of living a “Nia” lifestyle were as a student at the University of New Mexico where the Physical Education Department had a course offering. I quickly became a dedicated and joyful student of Nia, following my teacher from the university to community dance spaces around our town. After many years, I finally decided to unveil the next layer of Nia, taking the White Belt training. The White Belt introduced me to the basic 13 principles of Nia and solidified it’s forever existence in my life. As I became a White Belt my teacher moved away from the university setting and passed the baton my way. I taught the class in which I was originally a student for nearly 9 years, introducing Nia to hundreds and hundreds of university students.

I’ve been a mover since childhood. Unlike the other women of my family, who all read voraciously, my mother reports I was always moving through my life: skipping, dancing, performing, biking, running, hopping and playing. The gifts I’ve received from Nia are innumerable. I’ve danced through many of life’s experiences: relationship trials and tribulations, death, suicide, miscarriage, elections, and other griefs and losses, as well as growth, job changes, love, pleasure, travel, camaraderie, friendship and on. Many of my closes and most meaningful relationships have been born from dancing through life with Nia. Nia has afforded me friendships and movement experiences the world over and there’s no end in sight!

My discovery has been that each class provides me the opportunity to be in the moment with my body, mind, emotions and spirit and when I get that opportunity, inevitably, shift happens. Every. Damn. Time. Nia gives me the space to be my most authentic self, my best self in the moment. It’s a gift I am ever so grateful to have received.
