In cracking open the book Jonathan Livingston Seagull, the first page already had a concept that I consider significant. It said, “seagulls, as you know, never falter, never stall. To stall in the air is for them a disgrace and it is dishonor." It makes me think about how part of childhood is getting certain “programs” installed in us that we should all know in order to be a productive member of society. The fact that up until the age of about 7, we are living in theta brainwaves almost exclusively points to the fact that it was evolutionarily advantageous for us to begin life in a semi-hypnagogic state in order to get certain programs installed in us to help us be able to get along in our respective society.

Lately, I’ve been considering how maybe what “enlightenment” means is actually more like “unlearning”. It is getting to the point where these programs aren’t automatic. We can continue to act in certain ways to get by in society (if we choose to do so), but we begin to do so out of a conscious state rather than the automatic/programmed state.

What I’m curious about if you have any of these types of programs you’ve come across in your life that you have consciously worked to uninstall regardless of what appears “normal” for our society?

Here are some examples of what that could look like:
Stress eating
Talking about people behind their backs
Smoking
Eating excessive junk food/ excessive drinking
Watching too much TV
Being Late
Being in bad relationships
Procrastinating until the last minute
Focusing on the negative
Staying inside all day
Doomscrolling
Checking the phone habitually
Comparing yourself to others
Working yourself too hard
Never Including self care
Perfectionism
Not forgiving yourself/others
Dehydration

I personally relate strongly to the perfectionism/ working too hard/ not including self care lines. That’s one of the big goals I have for this year-- Instead of working “harder” to “get more done”, I’m working on tuning in to follow my passions and asking what seems like the most exciting thing I can do with the time I’ve been given today. From there, I shape my time in ways that feel more meaningful. This particular goal seems scary, kind of like “stalling in the air” (doing less to get more done). However, when you are on a higher vibration, the quantitatively smaller efforts can qualitatively count for more because you’re allowing space for synchronicities and grace!

I started the introductory offer at Yoga Art Space this past month for 30 days of unlimited yoga classes for 30 dollars and it is a very generous offer to say the least! I have mostly attended the just aerial yoga classes and they are amazing!!. I am a professional dancer and overall lead a really active lifestyle. I put a lot of wear and tear on my body and my body needed a lot of restoration and realigning. The amount of physical, mental and emotional benefits that I have received this month from attending the aerial yoga classes have been far more than I could have imagined and I have found a new passion in life: aerial yoga!!! Hi friends! I’m working on starting up a book club at the studio again! We used to have a book club that met up weekly. During the first part of the pandemic, we still met up weekly but on Zoom. Then with technology fatigue and people's schedules changing etc, the book club ended up falling away.

But I had the idea to start up a new kind of book club that is super laid back. You read as you go, whenever you want to and however fast you want to. Whenever you have points that you want to discuss because it was interesting to you or you have questions you want to discuss with the group, you can talk about it on a Discord channel I just made for the studio.

The first book we'll do is an amazing one called Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach. ✨🌹✨

It isn’t like a regular book club with chapter assignments or page requirements. We'll stick with this book for the months of January and February. The chat is there as support, love, and deep discussion! 🌙 You can even join the chat group and not read the book we're on, and you’ll get just as much out of it!

Our mission is to build a healthy, creative, and compassionate community. We understand the healing, empowering, and transformative powers of yoga, meditation, martial arts, and the creative arts. Our space includes four main areas of focus, which symbolically correlate with the four areas found in our studio. In the studio room, we strive to teach in a way that helps students strengthen the mind-body-spirit connection. In the front area, we encourage creativity, learning, and passion with activities such as our monthly paint nights and weekly book clubs. In the upstairs room, we encourage healing and growth as students can experience private massages with our partner, Sanctuary Natural Therapeutics. The cafe area is what unites everything so that we can come together in a strong community. As these values begin to cross the boundaries of the walls and integrate, we succeed in our mission of building our students and our community. As we shine our light brightly, we invite others to likewise shine more brilliantly.
