So unbelievably proud of my client Sean @overwerked and how far we've gone together on his fitness journey!! Today we were able to consistently deadlift 315lbs for several clean reps. Decided to throw on 385lbs without telling him how heavy his next upcoming set was 💪😈 struggled with this weight, but we'll be back there in no time. Pushing your clients to their max potential in the gym is critical for success. Anything less would be an absolute disservice to a motivated client. When you're in the gym by yourself, dig deep and search for what motivates you the most. Why are you in here? What are your goals? How badly do you want this? These are all questions you should be asking yourself. Put the phone away and up the intensity to where it should be at!

One of my favorite things to do with a client is to take progression shots/photos throughout the course of our training program. I do this for several reasons; 1.) Performing a thorough postural assessment allows me to understand where we need to focus our efforts because we need to straighten the body before we can strengthen it. For example, imagine if we jumped immediately into some advance multi-compound exercises, like the deadlift. Your body isn't going to necessarily enjoy this and we put ourselves at an extremely high risk of resulting injury. 2.) It's the best feeling in the world when you can visually see the positive changes occurring throughout time. Sometimes we need that constant reassurance to adhere to our training program! It's a proud moment for me as your trainer to see all of our hard work pay off in something we can show off to your friends, family, and the world 💪😁. 3.) This expands off of #2, but when we need motivation we can look at these pictures. I explain to all of my clients that sometimes looking down at that scale every morning isn't the best idea in the world. Weight has a tendency to fluctuate like crazy when undergoing a resistance/strength training program. As some of you may already know, muscle has weight too! When we shed off fat, sure our weight will typically decrease but when we develop muscle mass you will see that scale fluctuate and it can be discouraging at times. I remind everyone that there are much better tracking alternatives readily available to us. We can measure body fat % and visually assess to confirm we're still on the right path. What this essentially all boils down to is to stick with it and to keep grinding. The moment you give up is the moment when all those days of blood, sweat, and tears are thrown out the window. You must never let yourself get down; this isn't an easy road to travel but it is one of the MOST REWARDING. Do you incorporate ‘foam rolling’ on your workout days? Foam rolling promotes self-myofascial release and is viewed as being highly beneficial by promoting quicker muscle recovery and reducing overall soreness. There isn’t a whole lot of research available at the moment, but all the studies conducted so far have indicated positive results! We experience two different forms of soreness as a result of our workouts; delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) & acute soreness. DOMS occurs frequently in areas that are unaccustomed to load-bearing activity. Origins of soreness and accompanying symptoms are complex, but it is well-established that several forms of physical activity can cause this delayed soreness. For example, it’s relatively common to experience soreness & stiffness 12-72 hours following a dedicated leg day. Acute soreness, which is a pain that can develop during a workout, is also very prevalent in the gym. Far too often I witness incorrect form on a lot of different exercises and this can potentially cause a lot of pain. If this ever happens, utilize the gym to your advantage. Use the mirrors around you to analyze your posture/positioning and if you’re unclear on the exercise, ask someone! Using correct form in conjunction with stretching & foam rolling will put you at a lesser risk of developing any sort of soreness and will place you at a distinct advantage over everyone else 💪😎

I cannot stress how important it is to target every muscle -at every angle- in a major muscle group to remain proportional and consistent with all of your workouts. Here, we assume a 'suicide grip' used as a variation between a normal grip on a standard lat pulldown to place emphasis on contracting from within the latissimus dorsi/teres major muscles, rather than using too much grip assist to bring the bar down. It's key that you try and isolate the muscle(s) you're focusing on to get a more effective workout. Also pictured is a reverse/underhand grip pulldown to target the lower lats because we can't just focus on the upper portion of our back! Remember to hit EVERYTHING you can, don't neglect anything and don't forget the small details because they can make a HUGE difference 💪😁

A workout that I prescribe and program for one client will always be COMPLETELY different than what I have prepared for another client. Individualized training is one of the major components of my program that I take much pride in. Your fitness goals might be completely different than what someone else’s might be! It’s important to always remember that we’re unique from one another. I got into this field because I’m extremely passionate about what I do. That passion within me is what drives me to pay it forward onto all of you. Your goals are just as important to me as they are to you!
Self-image is critical to your happiness. In life, there is always going to be physical barriers and mental obstacles on your pursuit of happiness. The most important thing to remember is that you're in full control of YOUR life. No matter what cards you're dealt, it's ultimately up to you to seek the life you want or feel you deserve. Life will test your limits; you must pull through. This takes hard work. It's not easy.
Adherence to a lifestyle change requires intrinsic & extrinsic motivation. Inside of your heart, you must want this from within. It will fuel you. It will give you a hunger that can never be satiated. This internal drive will keep you going. I know it has for me. I can't stop. I won't stop. I will never give up. The support I have received from the beginning of my fitness journey pushes me to be the best I can be in all that I do. I will not disappoint you.
Setting goals is always important. You must ask yourself this question; "What do I want from my fitness program?". A personal fitness program must be fun and of interest to YOU! Just as many of my clients have their individual goals, I am also working on my own goals. When I set out on my fitness journey, I knew I wanted to make a change. I wasn't happy with where I was mentally & physically, so I decided enough was enough and I did something about it. Experiencing that life transformation (thanks to Ronnie Blea) inspired me to pay it forward so that others might get the same opportunity I did. Exercise is one of the most rewarding things you can include as a part of your life. Ultimately, it becomes a complete lifestyle change. The most important part is to stay with it and to never give up. Don't get discouraged. Don't let others put you down. None of us are perfect, but know your worth and challenge all those who doubt you!
My next few goals are to:
- Gain more clients so that I may make a full transition to personal training this summer of 2016!
- Continue my education so that I may stay up to date on everything in this ever-changing field. I plan to pursue my specialty certification of being a Health Coach within the next year.
- Refine and hone in on my skills while exploring different areas of the exercise & fitness continuum to provide a more effective program to all of my clients.
** As always, all goals should be 'SMART' goals!
