This year is the 60th Anniversary of NMYAFL, and we're taking a look back to highlight members of our NMYAFL Community who are willing to share their stories and the positive influence that our community has had on their lives!

We're kicking off the spotlight series with Frank Sedillo; former player, coach, board member, commissioner, and league president.

Frank Sedillo — My Story

I may be one of the few people affiliated with NMYAFL who has been the son of a coach, a player, a coach, a board member, commissioner, president of the league, a parent of a player, a referee, and its legal counsel.

Obviously, NMYAFL has had a great influence on my life, both in my personal development and hopefully in the development of other children. Having grown up in a rough part of town, the opportunity for success and advancement was slim. It is a very narrow path, and without the guidance of my parents, coaches, and teachers, the chances of a prosperous and fulfilling life were limited.

Participating in sports, and particularly in NMYAFL, set a foundation for hard work, discipline, intellect, and teamwork, all of which are necessary for success. As a result, I was able to participate in sports at the University of New Mexico and went on to become a lawyer and judge.

Recognizing the value of NMYAFL, over the years, I have been involved and hopefully helpful in the education and assistance of young men and women in learning life skills developed by athletic competition and accomplishment. More importantly, they were able to use these abilities in their everyday lives, which in turn hopefully led to their success.

I have coached several players who were able to participate at the collegiate and pro level, but my biggest claim to fame is that at least seven of the former players I coached became attorneys, and hundreds graduated from college. That is a lot to be said because most of these players came from the same environment that I grew up in. They learned how to be successful by simply participating in a sport and following one fundamental motto: “Think hard, try hard.”

There were hundreds of games won and a few championships along the way, but the absolute best part was knowing that by participating in NMYAFL, these kids became better people and had the opportunity for a better future. And it doesn’t get better than that. Happy anniversary!
