Duke City Barracuda Swimming and Water Polo

Earlier this month Colin, Nico, Mateo and Roman represented Duke City Barracuda and New Mexico swimming at the 2023 Western Zone Age Group Championship in Boise at the same pool where Grady swam Sectionals 2 weeks earlier. Coaches Kathy and Daryl were on the coaching staff. Lots of great swimming and lots of fun! A highlight was Roman winning the 200 fly B final. Congratulations and great job to our swimmers and coaches.

A few weeks ago, Grady went to Sectionals in Boise, Idaho at the same pool the 2021 Olympics Trials were held. He had some amazing swims and made finals for 3 events!

Congratulations to the 2023 New Mexico Games female athlete of the year, Daphne Salas.
Daphne is a remarkable young lady who competes in three sports year round. You can find her in the pool racing her peers, playing water polo, or dribbling past her opponents on the basketball court. Sports have helped shaped Daphne’s mental toughness as she was forced to face unimaginable battles. About a year and a half ago, she was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. Through her trials, Daphne has displayed remarkable courage, determination and an uplifting spirit. After a surgery that removed the tumor, she fought hard to recover for a chance to jump back into the pool. Only a year after the surgery, she competed in the 2023 New Mexico games swim competition, helping her team earn second place! In addition, she just competed in the National Water Polo Junior Olympics! Daphne is our super hero and motivates and inspires us all to have a positive outlook on life. She is the true definition of a warrior.

We are incredibly proud of our female athletes and what they accomplished at Junior Olympics over the weekend. They are coming home with some hardware for placing first in the Gold Bracket. 🥇🥇🥇

Our polo team had an amazing weekend in Dallas, TX for the 3rd session of Junior Olympics. We combined with athletes from and a few girls from to form several teams for 10U, 12U, 14U boys, 16U girls, 18U boys, and 18U girls categories. All of our athletes played so well, and gained a lot of valuable experiences. The highlight of the Junior Olympics was when our 18U girls won first place 🥇 in the Gold Division! Another notable accomplishment was when our 14U Boys placed 6th in the Platinum Division - the two teams that defeated them ended up placing first and second place. We are so very proud of all of our athletes and their performance this weekend!!!

Over the weekend, our team swam in the Long Course State Championships. Some of the highlights include:

- the boys 13-14 ranked first place in every relay.

- Our team ranked 5th, despite having a smaller number of athletes participating.

- Roman came inb2nd place for the High Point Award

- Our boys boys ranked 3rd in the team rankings.

Two of our athletes had the opportunity to participate with in the Endless Summer Classic in Texas last weekend. Awesome job, Ziva and James!

The Rugwell family from our team is in need of help. Jeremiah, the dad, has recently been diagnosed with cancer and has been hospitalized. Lacey, the mom, is currently working full-time, managing her home, and supporting her husband while he is hospitalized. A meal-train has been set up for their family. Amazing weekend for our athletes. We had two events happening at the same time - A polo tournament in San Antonio and a swim meet in Arizona. The athletes who participated in the Cactus Classic in Arizona did an amazing job. Many of our athletes walked away with a Cactus award for winning heats. Our boys also placed 1-4 for the High Point Awards and Loralie won 2nd place for girls High Point.

After a long weekend of games we went to the San Antonio River Walk the and the kids had a blast.

This past weekend Coach Nate and some of the team competed with at 2023 Welcome to Texas Showdown in San Antonio. Our kids really represented our team well. I am really proud of them. We even left with some hardware as our 14u girls got third place this weekend. The 12us finished 9th, 14u Girls finished 3rd, 18u girls finished 7th and 18u boys finished 6th. Overall all teams finished top ten in their bracket.

An absolutely astonishing first day of Cactus Classic! SO many Cactus heat wins for our group. Best times all around. One incredible highlight was our 13-14 boys taking 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th in the 400 IM!

Despite the break we had to take for a lightning strike this afternoon, we still had a great work out that was both fun and challenging. Our athletes took turns pulling each other on inner tubes while swimming the fly. 💪🦋
