Teachers and Performers Svetlana Petkovic "In order to be creative in a challenging art form, we have to know how to best prepare for the task of expressing ourselves. We must know our instrument before playing it, learn the language of the art and master it's grammar. The fundamentals and basic technique are the source of the good habits and skills we develop that will give us the confidence and the power to execute whatever we imagine and experience true freedom of creativity." Trained at the prestigious Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, Svetlana Petkovic has been performing and teaching dance for over 30 years. She has been a principal dancer throughout Europe and the United States, performing at an international level in a variety of styles: Classical Ballet, Character Dance, Eastern European Folk Dance, Historical Dance, Flamenco, Escuela Bolera (classical Spanish dance), and Argentine Tango, also teaching and lecturing at Conservatoire de musique de la Ville de Luxembourg, University of New Mexico, University of Idaho, University of Arizona, National Public Radio, and various Argentine tango festivals throughout the U.S. Svetlana’s primary mentors in tango are Gabriel Missé and Analia Centuríon. She works with them regularly, and hosts them for their tango intensives in Albuquerque. Svetlana teaches weekly classes and workshops in Salon Tango at her studio, The tangoXchange, Albuquerque’s only dedicated tango studio, and home of QTango Dance Orchestra. Erskine Maytorena Erskine Maytorena is a third generation tango musician and opera singer. He has produced, directed and performed in operas, zarzuelas, theater and concerts for over twenty years in Europe and the United States. He is the voice of Qtango, also playing bandoneon, clarinet, and trumpet in addition to leading the orchestra. QTango specializes in the traditional tango music of the "Golden Age" of the great Argentine tango orchestras. Qtango has toured extensively throughout the United States including appearances in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, Tucson, Sedona, Las Vegas, El Paso, Santa Fe and in their hometown Albuquerque.

[03/12/20]   Hi all - Svetlana has decided to put classes on hold for the time being to minimize exposure for everyone's sake. Please stay well and take good care of yourselves in the mean time and we look forward to resuming as soon as the risk has passed.

Had a wonderful practica last night

[11/03/16]   Calling Argentine tango dancers!

Brenda Dunagan, Marina Baden, and John Roy are offering an opportunity to participate in a cooperative group to perform Argentine tango in community settings. Any skill level is welcome to participate -- from beginner, intermediate, advanced, to expert (instructor). The goal is to improve skills, and allow some experience with choreography. Music would be of many genres allowing tango type styling.

Time commitment would be two (2) hour practices a month, times to be determined later, after we see if there is enough interest. (These are not "classes" or "lessons.") We'll start practices hopefully before the end of the year, or early next year.

Cost would be $20/month for each participant (to pay the 3 organizers and rent the 4 hours of floor space). You can sign up solo; you do not need a partner to sign up. We are looking for a minimum of 6 leads and 6 followers to gauge interest and move forward.

Once we see how many people are initially interested, we will secure floor space for the 2 (2 hour) monthly practices, and have an initial group meeting. (No payment necessary until that initial meeting, or later.)

This is intended to be a fun time for the participants allowing them to perform in front of various groups with opportunities for social dancing, short spot light solos (within songs, not a whole song), and choreographed portions of songs.

The audiences will be retirement communities, and anyone else that will have us.

If you are interested, please email Linda Smith at [email protected]

[10/25/16]   No classes Saturday the 29th during the Tango Festival. Don't forget Qtango will play live at the Milonga Friday night, the 28th at 9 PM.

[09/03/16]   Today! QTANGO at the Abq Museum Auditorium!

Today's performance at the Albuquerque Museum with quartet will be from 2 PM until 4:45 PM. It will be a concert style lecture where we will illustrate how tango music for dancers evolved from the simple styles of Canaro through complexity of Pugliese. Dancers would get a lot from it, but no dancing space. Highly recommended for those looking to learn more about the tango music we all dance to.
