Leon Fountain Wins Rodeo Austin With 92 Points on Killer Bee Leon Fountain made the first 90 point ride of his career Saturday night to get the win at Rodeo Austin and move into the Top 10 in the PRCA Saddle Bronc Riding World Standings.
Chris Burke suggested we highlight some of the great Bull Riders from the past from NM. We will try and do this over the next few weeks. To start it off we will highlight Michael Gaffeny.
Michael Gaffney won the 1997 World Championship after going 5-for-5 at the PBR World Finals, despite riding with an unstable left shoulder that he originally injured at a 1994 rodeo. It was a remarkable comeback by Gaffney as Adriano Moraes seemed poised to win his second world title. Moraes had opened up a massive lead during the first half of the season but sustained a season-ending broken leg in Sao Paulo, Brazil, that August.
Gaffney’s 96.5-point ride on Little Yellow Jacket in Nampa, Idaho, in 2004 was tied for the highest-scored bull ride in PBR history for 17 years—until Jose Vitor Leme’s 97.75-point ride on Woopaa earlier this year. Gaffney rode Little Yellow Jacket for 93.75 points in 2004 as well.
The New Mexico native won the bull riding event average at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in back-to-back years (1990-1991), and a year later, he went on to invest $1,000 to become one of the PBR’s 20 co-founders.
Gaffney retired in 2004 and he was inducted into the PBR’s Ring of Honor in 2005.
Please say a prayer and help support one of New Mexico’s own, Zerrick Ponder. He endured a pretty rough injury and could use our help.

I have heartbreaking news to share following a great weekend in New York City. Jerome Robinson, PBR‘s longtime Arena Director, passed away this evening at his home in Colorado.
Jerome spent his final weekend on the dirt, bringing the sport he loved to fans at Madison Square Garden. It is fitting because all Jerome wanted was to be a rodeo cowboy. Jerome excelled as a bull rider at Colorado State University; qualified for 11 NFR appearances starting in 1970; served as PRCA’s Bull Riding Director; worked as an independent promoter, and then served PBR since our founding.
From the chutes set up to dirt load in, from hanging the lights to bringing in the bulls, Jerome created the framework for producing a traveling sport that has grown beyond his wildest dreams.
He was indeed a legendary figure, loved and respected by everyone in our industry. We will be sharing our plans for honoring Jerome in the coming days.
For now, please keep his wife Dorya, daughter Amy, and family in your prayers.
