Please note that we will be closed from November 16 through November 30 in accordance with the state of New Mexico's shelter in place orders.
It's been a while since we plugged our Patreon www.patreon.com/abqcircusarts, and I've been getting a lot of questions lately about what folks can be doing for aerial conditioning.
Our Patreon gives access to monthly circus specific training routines and pre-hab/rehab techniques for circus safety. There are currently 8 workouts and 8 prehab exercises that are available immediately when you sign up.
Feel free to DM me with questions or anything that existing patrons would like to see.
Patreon Patreon is empowering a new generation of creators. Support and engage with artists and creators as they live out their passions!
Please note: Per new state guidelines, all students and participants are required to wear a face mask at all times at ACA. Thank you for your understanding and compliance.
Meet Our Teachers:
Josie has been enthralled by the silks since her first class a half-decade ago. She loves how practice on the fabrics stimulates both mentally and physically, while also being a venue for creativity and self-expression.
Now, Josie combines her love of fabrics with her love of teaching. Josie has been a traditional educator for 15 years and uses that knowledge of how people learn to guide her work with aerial students. Josie has engaged in aerial teacher training through NECCA and the Circus Arts Institute. She has also completed a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training, which she incorporates into classes to build students' strength and flexibility.
Josie loves that she can contribute to the inclusive circus community in New Mexico by welcoming all students to come to train with us at ABQ Circus Arts.
Privates Offered: Fabric, Conditioning, Yoga
Meet our teachers:
Meghan Boerding has been active in the Circus Arts community for over five years. She increasingly enjoys wrap theory and has always enjoyed drops, and is now enjoying combining these together. She also owns four pugs and loves all animals. She has availability 4:30 pm or later during the week. Weekends can be discussed as well. Ask about weekend availability.
GET TO KNOW YOUR TEACHERS!
Ilana Rose has been teaching aerials and handstands for over 10 years. She teaches rope, silks, trapeze and lyra from beginner to advanced. She is especially excited about working with students on dynamic movement, choreography, movement quality and fabric theory.
Because Ilana lives in Santa Fe, her ABQ schedule is limited to Wednesdays and Sundays.
To schedule a private lesson with Ilana, email [email protected].
My dear circus family,
I am so appreciative of Aaron Koz and the other brilliant minds that have so carefully composed this letter. While they are not my words, I share these sentiments strongly. We must act together, now and in the future, to make our country better.
This week, as America is mourning the killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and others in what has become a book of those lost, we've been wondering as white artists in the circus community, "What more can we do to help?" The taking of their lives are sad and outrageous chords in a cacophony of violence against the black community that extends back well before we were born. The killing of unarmed men and women of color has pervaded and tarnished the American landscape for centuries, but so has the history of silence in those not directly affected by such brutality. While it indeed an affront to us as humans, it is also in contrast to the spirit of what we do as artists: utilizing our bodies to lift the human spirit, inspiring wonder. It is no understatement to say that the violence that led to George Floyd and countless others' deaths is in direct opposition to the heart of circus arts, to say nothing of humanity as a whole. That said, we have been heartened by the efforts and actions of circus artists. We want to acknowledge that many of you are already putting in the work with your time, your money, and your bodies to be allies, and we want to hear and amplify the work that is being done. As a circus community, we have an incredibly powerful voice both online and offline, and now is a paramount time to examine how to use that voice. It could be an opportunity to uplift circus artists of color who have been traditionally underrepresented. It could be a means to raise funds for organizations that are doing good work. It could be a way to share resources and educate each other. Such dialogue will help us to make a better community both within and beyond the circus world. We are hoping you can join so we can put together a cohort of circus artists who are using their privilege and platform to bring awareness and financial support to work towards ending the social injustice in our society.
What does this mean?
In line with this unified circus stance of antiracism, we are looking for artists willing to join us in doing one or more of the following:
1) Pledging to donate
The following, as many know, are excellent funds in the short term to direct a portion/the entirety of workshop, sponsorship, advertising, and/or teaching profits:
Minnesota Freedom Fund - Has received enough donations at this time. George Floyd Memorial Fund Black Visions Reclaim the Block Campaign Zero
In the long term, sustained donations to these and the following organizations that have a long track record of fighting for racial justice:
ACLU - Dedicated to expanding promise the reach of the US Constitution to all
Color of Change - An organization that challenges corporations and politicians to ensure freedom from injustice
Black Lives Matter - Founded to end State-sanctioned violence and disinformation
NAACP - Organization founded in 1909 to eliminate race-based discrimination
Know Your Rights - Organization begun by Colin Kaepernick to uplift Black and Brown communities
EJI - Dedicated to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment
SURJ - Moves white people to act to undermine white supremacy
Campaign Zero - Provides actionable steps to advocate for legislative change against police brutality.
2) Curating exceptional content from underrepresented circus artists of color by - Increasing visibility of non-white circus artists on social media while being aware of tokenizing (check out @blackaerialist).
- Calling out racist/discriminatory hiring practices for teaching/gigs/shows/et cetera.
3) Sharing resources to support Black Lives Matter, legal advocacy, legislative change What are the goals of this in general? Short term: Enable the Circus Community to have an active, united, empathic, educated, anti-racist response that amplifies and is aligned with the work that is already being done Long term: Create the means for circus artists to continue supporting non-white circus art and artists by directing attention, time, and resources
We hope that after reading this, you will be willing to be on board as we use our art to support a more just world. If you're excited to participate, please respond with your contact information and extent to which you'd like to be involved.
To unify the community in the cause and spread the message, we are hoping to use the hashtags (and follow !)
Please also reach out with questions, concerns, and criticism. We want to hear and learn and do better. Consider forwarding this to other white circus artists.
Sincerely, Max March-Steinman Prisma Blumenthal Connor Dealy Aaron Kozloff
We also want to thank the black circus artists and aerialists who have donated their time, guidance, and advice in helping us craft this message, including but not limited to: Lexi Powell - @lexipowww Kimberly Sende - @theblackaerialist Bunmi Odusmosu - @_sassy_bee

It's important to bring attention to the folks doing right during this uncertain time. A huge thanks to our landlord, Jerry Miller, at Factory On 5th Gallery and the The Kosmos Restaurant, who is being an amazing support as we navigate this pandemic.
He helped us establish and grow our circus space and community, and he is now helping us survive during this pandemic.
We acknowledge and give gratitude for his efforts. Join all of us at ACA in thanking Jerry and supporting the Kosmos and Factory on 5th.

A Message to our wonderful circus community:
Our space will continue to remain closed until further notice, to help keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. While we are sad that we are not training together in person, we have a very active online community. We are linking training programs, personal goals, and generally helping each other through these difficult times through the magic of the internet on FB Messenger and our FB Group.
If you would like to support ACA through these lean months, you have several options:
1. Contact your teacher directly for online conditioning private lessons or programs.
2. Donate through PayPal at [email protected]
3. Support our Patreon at www.patreon.com/abqcircusarts
4. Purchase ACA clothing items at https://shop.spreadshirt.com/abq-circus-arts/all
We may not know what the future will hold, but we'll see you on the other side of this. All of our love,
ACA Teachers and Management
