ABQ Sportfishing

ABQ Sportfishing is dedicated to promoting the sport of fishing, primarily bass, around New Mexico. We post fishing reports and tournament news.

Brian has been fishing competitively for 9 years. He has given fishing seminars, guided and supported the fishing community around the Southwest for the past 10 years. Since 2007, Brian has primarily fished for bass; however his background in fishing is very diverse. Having been a guide in New Mexico for striped bass and walleye, he has a diverse knowledge of many species. Growing up in WI on Lake Michigan and Green Bay, Brian has experience on large and small bodies of water, fishing for everything from yellow perch to king salmon. His passion for fishing is shared through his website, ABQSportfishing.com and by his many interactions within the fishing community. His willingness to share his knowledge of the sport and products through in-person and online venues has been demonstrated for over 12 years.

Sun Country Bass Team Trail

Great time. Fishing was tough for us but we are looking forward to our next trip back now that we know the lake a little better. Congrats again to all the people that did well, especially the top teams.

PK Summary
It was great to finally be able to get away from the chaos and fish a tournament again!! As always, the folks at Possum Hollow were very accommodating. Thank you to Jim and Tracy and their crew!!

We had 35 teams show up to fish.

Day one was a steady, light rain for the entire tournament day. Criswell/Criswell lead day one with 21.28 lbs. Followed by Herrera/Soukup with 20.53, Burrows with 17.72, Heiser/Heiser with 16.92 and Carr/Ducharme with 16.45.
Day two dawned clear and stayed sunny all day. Bosley and Morris weighed 28.88 on Sunday for a total of 38.78 lbs for the win. 2nd place was Rivera/Wilson with 35.65. Yerby/Kirkes took 3rd with 34.50. 4th was Criswell/Criswell with a total of 31.49 and Carr/Ducharme rounded out the top 5 with 31.47.
Big Bass of the tournament was 8.80 caught by Warren
Burrows and worth $300.
1st Place Paid $3,780
2nd Place Paid $2,100
3rd Place Paid $1,260
4th Place Paid $845
5th Place Paid $420

$2,100 was retained for payout at championship.

Make sure to follow closely as we near the end of May. It looks likely that we will not be able to have our Conchas tournament as scheduled. So, we will most likely be moving that tournament location to a lake in Texas. We will make that decision by June 1st to give everyone ample time to make plans.
Thanks to everyone who joined us at PK!!

Congrats to Kris Bosley and Andrea N Justin Morris (just Justin, but all of our wives have a hand in all this also, some more directly than others). What a comeback on Day 2!

Great seeing everyone and hope to see you all again soon. This situation has made it particularly challenging to enjoy some of the things we do together.

Hopefully we start getting back to normal soon, but in the meantime, stay healthy.

Welcome to Possum Kingdom. Friday night before Sun Country Bass Team Trail #2. Possum Hollow Restaurant-Lodge has been nothing short of exceptional during this very challenging time. We will need some luck tomorrow on Day 1 of the derby with this storm. Great to catch up with many folks we haven’t seen in a while. Should have retied before dinner...

Possum Kingdom May 16-17th

As of today, we ARE planning on having the PK tournament!!! Possum Hollow will be the host location for tournament registration, take-off and weigh in. We will have registration at the Possum Hollow Restaurant Friday, May 15th from 6:30-8:00pm. If you will not be able to make the registration in person, you must text me by 8:00pm (Friday the 15th) in order to avoid being the last boat out each day at take-off. (806) 674-7148

We will be required to maintain social distancing. Please be mindful of that. Especially at registration and weigh-in. We will provide all details of the tournament (take-off, weigh-in times, etc. at registration.)

The situation regarding Covid 19 and how the individual states are addressing the situation, is still very fluid. There is of course, still a possibility that we don’t get to have this tournament. Continue checking for updates, but plan on fishing in two weeks!!!

We look forward to seeing everyone there.

Bandelier Elementary School PE teacher helps kids stay active at home

This is the kind of news that should he in the headlines. Wanted to send a big shout out to my fishing partner Chris Jarvis and his son Sean Jarvis for going the extra mile (lots of them) while building out curriculum for his students at Bandelier Elementary during these challenging times. Congrats Chris! You deserve the recognition.

Want to send a big shout out to Genesis Signs and to Fox Automotive for the facelift on the boat this year. The wrap, fenders, and lights came out awesome. Looking forward to seeing you all on the water soon! This is the third wrap that Greg and his crew Genesis Signs have done for us and they always surpass expectations.

Ryan at Fox has been an outstanding auto body guru (some would call him MacGyver). If you have something you need fixed on a car body, Fox Automotive is the place.

Absentee Voting

The New Mexico State Supreme Court ruled yesterday that in person will take place as scheduled.

I realize each voter may have different feelings about their personal right to vote, but in the interest of keeping New Mexicans alive and well, this may be the election to consider voting via absentee ballot. There is no requirement to be absent from the state in order to request an absentee ballot. In fact, no explanation is necessary as to why you are requesting an absentee ballot. Absentee balloting is safe and as free from fraud as any other method of voting. In fact, counties from around the country have begun modeling the methods and processes that Bernalillo County developed.

I'm asking that you consider an absentee ballot. It's easy to do on line here https://www.bernco.gov/clerk/absentee-voting.aspx Ballots can be requested until May 28th. Keep in mind that if you request an absentee ballot but decide later you want to vote in person, you will be required to cast a provisional ballot. Once it is cross checked that your absentee ballot has not been received in the clerk's office, then your provisional ballot will be processed. Obviously this is to ensure a voter cannot vote twice.

And if you feel compelled, spread the word to others (instead of the virus) to encourage absentee ballots.

bernco.gov An absentee ballot must be requested by a voter by submission of an application not later than the Thursday immediately prior to the date of the election. The last day for our office to mail absentee ballots is the Friday before each election. Completed official mailing envelopes (with absentee ball...

Forrest Wood tribute, Lipless cranks on bottom in cold water

Jay pays tribute to a great in the boating and fishing industry. I've met a lot of people in the sport. Forrest was one of the nicest, most genuine, people you could meet. In 2006 I met him briefly at an industry event and then saw him the next day, he remembered what we had discussed and who I was. That wouldn't have been that big of a deal, but I think there were hundreds of guides and tournament anglers at the event in Flippin. He made everyone feel like they were a close friend.
