Big thanks for liking our page ! Want to see water polo in action or some shirtless guys in action? Then come visit us Wednesday nights 6:30 to 8:30pm at UNM Johnson's Armond Natatorium. We're always scrimmaging other water polo players and this Wednesday the pool will be set up for 30 meter competition!
Our Water Polo season is a go and I just want to give you all some important reminders and updates about the season ahead. First, practices are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Johnson Pool. NM Masters also has 8am Sunday practices that your all welcome and encouraged to attend. We're looking to move Monday night practice to Tuesday nights or a weekday morning so that our coaching staff and other members of our team can attend all the practices.
Speaking of our coaching staff I'm excited to announce that Bryant Shuey will be our Assistant Coach this year! Glad to have both him and Craig for this season.
Thirdly, Team Vegas Henderson has cancelled their October Master's water polo tournament. Hopefully they'll have their Summer Tournament back next year, but for now we'll be looking into other tournaments.
Fourth, we will be having an A and B team this year! Both teams will compete in the AWP tournament and we'd like to take both teams to some out of town Tournaments in the Winter/Spring such as the January Arizona Scottsdale Tourny. However, only the A team will compete in Collegiate League Water Polo Games. We would have fielded two teams in the league, but we don't have enough money to do so. It would have cost us more than $2,000 extra which we don't have after paying for the A Team's entry fee, purchasing over $3,000 in new equipment, $2,000 in pool rental fees and many other costs associated with hosting both the Rocky Mountain Championships and fielding a water polo in general (coaches salaries for instance). That said all spots on the A Team are up for grabs and even then you'll still be playing the sport you love and will be an important part of the team (many of those on the B team are the future of our team).
Lastly, I know everyone has bills to pay, classes to worry about, and whole lives of their own to take care of, but I hope you all try and make as many practices and tournaments as you can this semester. With many of our opponents top athletes graduated we have a real opportunity to kick some ass this season.
See you at the pool guys!
So I've been in touch with the new Vegas Tournament director (it is no longer Sandy Nitta, I believe she is now coaching the Brazilian Women's National Team) and they have moved the Tournament to October. The exact date is still tentative. For those of us who were looking forward to the tournament being in August this is certainly a set back, but I will stay in contact with the Vegas Henderson staff and let you all know when they have an exact date. Also don't forget about polo practice tonight! Lets keep up the turn out!
Hope everyone's summer is going well. I just wanted to highlight a couple of UNM Water Polo developments. First, there is practice tomorrow despite the July 4th Holiday on Thursday. Based on the number of people we have asking if there's practice tomorrow we'll probably have a better than expected turn out.
Second, a few months ago the UNM Men's Water Polo team won it's bid for hosting the 2013 Collegiate Water Polo Rocky Mountain Championships! We're very excited for this opportunity to host and bring some college level water polo to the 505. I hope you all can join us for this exciting tournament October 26-27th at UNM Johnson's Olympic Pool. That said I'm also excited to announce that we're updating UNM's Water Polo equipment for the tournament including new goal attachments, lane lines, shot clocks, water polo balls, head caps and more.
Lastly I just wanted to point out that you can find out more information about the UNM Men's Water Polo Team on our newly updated website at http://unmmenswaterpolo.weebly.com/index.html. On it you can find out information about our upcoming season, our schedule, practice times and more.
Thanks for reading and staying updated! Let me know if you all ever have any questions or concerns. Happy Fourth of July!
