OAAA Prepares for More Budget Reductions in FY18

The New Mexico Office of African American Affairs is preparing for an additional $22,500 budget reduction in FY18. The current FY17 budget cut is $43,318. The total FY18 legislative suggested appropriation reduction, found in HB2, is $65,818 less than the FY16 budget allocation. The reduction will cause the agency to reduce contractual dollars, depending more on outreach coordinators and collaborations with partners to fulfill the agency’s mission and strategic plan.

The reduction will also impede upon how the agency approves funding support for community initiatives. Although we will have limited funds to assist initiatives around the state, the agency will continue to support at the levels of which the FY18 budget will allow. The staff of OAAA are working hard to be innovative, restructuring agency programming, so that the agency does not lack in producing measurable outcomes for our community.

The staff will continue to perform well in the main focus areas; health outreach, economic development, education advancement, policy and advocacy. We are looking forward to continuing collaborations with community organizations to ensure the mission of the agency is upheld and our beloved community continues to receive services and advocacy from the agency. We are committed to working with community organizations, state departments, elected officials and the governors administration to ensure equity for Blacks in New Mexico.

Fond Farewell

"Although we will miss Kenneth, we celebrate his professional elevation to Director of Clinical Services for the R**e Crisis Center of New Mexico. During his time at the agency he has been able to accomplish much on behalf of health outcomes for Blacks in our state. He has agreed to continue to work with our health committee and office to insure the work he started continues in the community. The specifics of how the partnership will work to be announced in the next newsletter. CONGRATULATIONS KENNETH! We look forward to our new adventures together." - Director Yvette Kaufman-Bell

With mixed sentiment, I will be leaving the position of Health Outreach Coordinator at the Office of African American Affairs as of March 24 and transition to Director of Clinical Services at the R**e Crisis Center of Central New Mexico.

I will certainly and sincerely miss working with my passionate colleagues here. It has been an honor to serve my community with such an awesome team, and I am looking forward to partnering with the Office of African American Affairs in my new position to continue to help elevate and advance our mutual goals of advocacy, social justice, and the well-being of New Mexico’s vulnerable populations.

OAAA Supports Veterans

The New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services will provide a Daily Veteran-Related Legislation Update as a courtesy to our state’s veterans, veterans service organizations, and community partners for the duration of this sixty-day session—which convened at noon on January 17 and adjourns at noon on March 18.

This daily update will contain information about all introduced veteran-related bills/memorials/resolutions--and show their status in the legislative process.

For more information about the 2017 Legislature's veteran-related bills, contact Department of Veterans' Services' Ray Seva via [email protected].

You can also visit the Legislature website at https://www.nmlegis.gov/ and then click on the “legislation” subheading at the top of the page. The schedules for all committee hearings and floor sessions can be found at https://www.nmlegis.gov/Calendar/Session.

The Veterans Resource Center would greatly appreciate your help in getting the word out about an amazing opportunity. On May 18-22, 2016 or October 11-15, 2017, they will be hosting the 5th UNM Student Veterans Retreat at Vallecitos Mountain Retreat Center in northern New Mexico.

The retreat has three main components: Mindfulness training, Camaraderie, and Nature. Students will learn to practice mindfulness (shown to decrease blood pressure, mitigate pain and manage stress) in the company of fellow veteran students. This will give them the chance to create new friendships to enhance their university experience. All the while, they will be in the Tusas Mountains, away from the distractions of the city, internet, and their cell phone!

If you work with any Veteran students you feel may be interested in this event, please share with them the attached invitation. You can also direct them to https://vrc.unm.edu/programs/student-veterans-retreat.html.

Upcoming lectures that AIA is hosting at the Albuquerque Museum

March 12: “The Roots of Harlem’s Second Renaissance” – In the last four decades of the twentieth century, Harlem, New York—one of America’s most famous neighborhoods—transformed from the symbol of midcentury “urban crisis” to the most celebrated example of “urban renaissance” in the United States. Dr. Brian Goldstein, Professor of Architecture and architectural historian at UNM, will explore the role that Harlemites played in bringing about Harlem’s urban renaissance, an outcome that had both positive and negative effects for their neighborhood.

April 9: “Swaziland – Africa in a Nutshell” - Swaziland is seldom referenced in international news but it encapsulates much of both the positive and negative views of Africa; in some ways, it is “Africa in a nutshell”, but small can be stunning, as Swaziland’s unique and compelling characteristics demonstrate. Ann Harris Davidson will present some of the history, geography, culture and politics of Swaziland.
