The New Mexico High School Coaches Association extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and the entire Rio Rancho Public Schools community on the passing of longtime member and dedicated coach, Coach Sal Gonzales.

Coach Gonzales leaves behind an extraordinary legacy in New Mexico athletics. As a cross country coach at Rio Rancho High School, he led his teams to four state championships (2013, 2014, 2016, 2020). He also captured a state title in 1999 at Pecos High School, making him a five-time state champion and one of the most accomplished coaches in our state.

His passion, leadership, and commitment to students and coaches will not be forgotten. He made a difference in countless lives and will be deeply missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all who knew and loved him during this difficult time.

Congratulations to Coach Lori Mabrey on an incredible milestone — 400 career wins! What an amazing accomplishment that reflects years of dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to her athletes and program. Reaching 400 wins doesn’t just happen — it’s built through perseverance, discipline, and a belief in something bigger than yourself. Coach Mabrey continues to set the standard, and she is truly a great example of resilience to all female athletes. Her journey shows what is possible through hard work, passion, and the courage to keep pushing forward. Here’s to 400 wins and many more to come! Dr. Mabrey is up there smiling and proud as can be.

👏🏀🔥 Huge congratulations to Roy Sanchez of Eldorado High School — NMHSCA Hall of Honor member, Level 5 Milestone Award recipient, past president, and a true pillar of New Mexico basketball. Coach Sanchez has been selected to coach in this year’s McDonald’s All-American Games, leading the East team made up of the nation’s top high school players.👏🏀🔥 From shaping the game here at home to representing New Mexico on one of basketball’s biggest stages, this honor is well deserved. A proud moment for Coach Sanchez, Eldorado, and the NMHSCA.

NMHSCA Football Winter Clinic

Due to weather, a few of our scheduled speakers were grounded. In true New Mexico coaches fashion, our own NMHSCA coaches stepped up in a big way and hosted an outstanding discussion panel on the fly. Huge thank you to Coach Lee, Coach Cisco, Coach Ocampo, Coach Howe, Coach Fernandez, and Coach Wallin for leading the conversation and sharing their insight. And thank you to all of our attendees for your flexibility, patience, and understanding. This is what makes our coaching community special. #NMCoachesStepUp
