### Panamericano de Ajedrez de la Juventud 2019 - Guayaquil, Ecuador (2019 Pan American Youth Chess Championships)

There were 621 players across 11 sections or divisions by age groups (for male and female) from 25 countries and dependent territories represented. This was Brian's first time competing at Pan-Am. Competing in the age category of Under 12 (U12-A), he qualified as the Official Representative (OR) for the United States, earning this honor from his achievements. That said, there were also pressures and stress that came with that distinction as well.

With a starting rank of #18 out of 76 players in the U-12A section, Brian competed against players from the following countries during the course of the tournament: Peru, Ecuador, Panama, Brazil, Colombia, and USA.

Highlights from the tournament: Brian drew against the #1 ranked U-12 player from Panama, won against the #3 ranked U-12 player from Colombia for the final round, and also won against the #3 ranked (and top seed in the section) U-12 player from Canada in the blitz tournament.

Brian played a good tournament overall but missed the chance to place for a medal; he did finished strong with 6/9 pts placing in the top 10 (#10) in the section, improving his standard FIDE rating.

He also participated in the Pan-Am FIDE Blitz tournament as a side event and improved his FIDE blitz rating as well.

This has been a good experience, honor, a learning opportunity, bonding time and further augments Brian's chess goals as he builds up his international experience and exposure.

Amazing chess results for USA in the Olympiad!

Fabiano Caruana had big pressure on his shoulders as Wesley So had lost his game to Teimour Radjabov and Hikaru Nakamura had drawn against Arkadij Naiditsch. Everything was now down to Fabiano Caruana and Samuel Shankland to save USA in the match. Fabi played a fabulous heavy piece middlegame and dragged Shakhriyar Mamedyarov's king out in the open and checkmated him! This result helped USA to equal the scores and Shankland's victory helped the team to seal the match. USA beat Azerbaijan 2.5-1.5 in an absolute thriller.
