Principles for Achieving a Healthier Life Series
Read Time: 2-3 mins.

In our principles series we will be highlighting principles that are critical for you to understand in order to maximize your results in health and life. If you are climbing your way back from substantial pain or persistent health problems, do not take these lightly. Something that you will notice about Functional Patterns is that it is many times the practitioners themselves that get the most substantial results, that is because we have been implementing these principles into our lives for years. We strive to set the example and show you what you are capable of when you implement what we teach. Each one of us has a history of chronic pain and injury that we are healing from. By embracing these principles and being patient, we are able to enjoy hard workouts again without feeling like we’re being damaged by them. That’s what FP is all about - sustainable progress for a lifetime.

That being said, its not about being perfect with your behaviors. It’s about being honest with yourself, striving to move in a better direction, and being patient with your body as not all days will feel like improvement.

Principle #7: Learn to Use More Objective Language
The language you use dictates how you think, how you feel, and how accurate your thoughts are about the world around you.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Generally, language lands in two categories: objective and subjective.

Objective words are words that represent things that are observable and measurable. These include words like “pen”, “dog”, or “car”. If you ask 100 people what each of these words represents, you’ll get pretty uniform answers.

Subjective words typically represent more abstract concepts that can’t quite be defined or measured such as “liberty”, “love”, “freedom”, or “democracy”. If you ask 100 people what each of these words represents, you’ll likely hear 100 different answers.

When someone has the tendency to speak and think with more objective language, life is more predictable, goals are more achievable, and this brings on a sense of calm. Furthermore, those who use more objective language tend to be better communicators since there is little space for misinterpretation. Finally, those who can speak more objectively tend to feel more “understood” by those in their social group.

When someone has the tendency to speak and think with more subjective language, life is less predictable, goals are less achievable, and this can bring on a sense of anxiety, depression, and lonesomeness. This is because subjective language is less measurable and easier to misinterpret.

The following videos may be the single most important videos you watch in terms of understanding and getting results with Functional Patterns - watch them and take time to reflect before making conclusions or opinions. They are based off of a very important book titled The Tyranny of Words

Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIdjdPm_FU8

Becoming less anxious is a part of returning your body to homeostasis so that it can heal. Seeing the world through a more objective lense helps you respond to the world less emotionally and therefore feel more relaxed and healthy.

The Tyranny of Words Part 2 The second video in a series explaining the key points from the Tyranny of Words and how the concepts can influence our sociological organization

Principle #6: Increase Your Time Horizon
Learn to think more about the future so that you can make more productive decisions now.

_________________________________________________________________________________

A short time horizon leads us to making short-term decisions. By spending more time thinking about the future you want, you can hold yourself accountable to making the decisions that will get you there. This will train you to operate within a longer time horizon.

Action Items

About how long is the average time horizon of your decisions?
Become aware of ways that you sabotage your long-term progress by partaking in behaviors that provide short-term gratification (things that feel good now but hurt you long-term)
Engage in daily behaviors that you know will pay off long-term while cultivating patience in the process
Ask yourself if you have realistic expectations for how long it should take to achieve your goals?
Acknowledge that anything worthwhile takes time.
Results = Consistent Effort / Time
Assume that the first 20 hours of engaging in any new endeavor will yield zero results and make your objective getting past those first 20 hours so you can start gaining the benefits. This will help you have more realistic expectations, help you stay consistent, and more likely to achieve your goal.

Principle #5: Accept Responsibility for Your Health and Embrace Accountability
If you can accept that it was your decisions that lead to your current state of health and then seek out those who will hold you accountable for your goals, you will create an optimal environment for success.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Look to spend more time with people that hold you accountable for achieving your goals and will communicate directly when you are not doing what you know you should be doing (or shouldn’t be doing). Those who hold you accountable are your true friends because they acknowledge your goals and help you move in the right direction.

Our group classes are meant to be an environment where you can spend time with other people with similar goals and develop supportive relationships. Additionally, group classes are a great accountability tool for developing your FP practice.

Another way you can engage in the FP community is by joining the “Functional Patterns Doers” group on Facebook. Post your posture pictures, videos of you practicing exercises, or simply ask questions. This page has been active for years and has lots of good questions. You can search the group for questions that have already been asked or ask a new one if you can’t find the answer you are looking for.

Don’t underestimate the power of receiving different forms of feedback from within the FP community. There are a lot of us working to improve our lives that have likely been through the same experiences you have.
