Today was an extra special Thanksgiving.

Not only was I able to fill my tag while sitting in the stand with my dad, my oldest was able to take part in the recovery.

It’s days like these I have to step back, slow down, and give thanks for just how much of a blessing this piece of land has been to our family!

Hunt waterholes only when it’s hot, right?

Wrong!

The next week is an outstanding time to target water sources in the Midwest, and here are a few facts why:

Fact #1: Deer need to drink (on average) between 1/2 and 1 gallons of water each day throughout the year. During times of increased exertion (like during the rut) that amount increases even more.

Fact #2: When there is adequate moisture in plant vegetation, up to 70% of their daily water intake can be consumed through the plants they eat - they don’t necessarily have to go to a water source.

Fact #3: There is little-to-no moisture remaining in vegetation at this point in the year, and bucks are at their highest exertion levels.

The combination of these factors means that deer right now are forced to prioritize the few remaining water sources, sometimes even visiting the same spot multiple times in the same day.

The two largest water sources on our property were BONE DRY today, so we took the time to fill them up one last time for the year. Going into firearm season next weekend, I have plans to hunt several of these setups.

Planting conifers for long-term screening is a significant time and money investment…

My biggest advice? If you’re not prepared to take steps to protect that investment, don’t even bother in the first place!

Even a “deer resistant” species like the Norway Spruce I’ve planted on my property are susceptible to rubbing and browse pressure for the first few years - and I learned that lesson the hard way.

When you budget for these trees, make sure to also budget for ways to protect them. For me that means cages year-round and bud caps in the winter until they are behind the reach of a deer.
