The Sunday Scaries.

That sinking feeling that starts creeping in sometime Sunday afternoon when you realize Monday is coming.

Sometimes it is just the end of the weekend.
Sometimes it is a busy week ahead.
But sometimes, it is a data point.

A signal that something about the work, the pace, the environment, or the version of success you are living may no longer fit.

That data point does not automatically mean:
Quit the job.
Change careers.
Start a business.
Blow everything up.

But it may mean the feeling deserves more than:

“It will be fine.”

A phrase I have used PLENTY of times to calm myself down without necessarily changing the situation.

A good job can still be the wrong job for you.
A respected company can still be the wrong culture or environment.
A strong salary can still come with personal costs you no longer want to pay.
A promotion can still move you further away from the life you are trying to build.

The better question may not be:

“Why do I dread Mondays?”

It may be:

“What is this feeling trying to tell me?”

That is where clarity often begins.

“I’ve done this for so long, I don’t know how to do anything else.”

I hear versions of this from successful professionals almost daily.

Each one has spent 15, 20, even 25+ years building deep expertise.

They know their industry.
They know how to solve the problems.
People come to them because they know what to do.

And somewhere along the way, experience can start to feel less like an asset and more like a boundary.

“I’m good at this, so this must be what I keep doing.”

But your experience is not a job title.

That is important enough to stop and read again.

Your. Experience. Is. Not. A. Job. Title.

Your experience is a collection of skills, judgment, relationships, lessons, instincts, and hard-earned knowledge that can often travel much further than you think.

My favorite coaching moments are when my clients begin to see the difference between:

“What have I always done?”
and
“What am I actually capable of doing?”

Those are not the same question.

Sometimes the first step toward what’s next is simply giving yourself permission to stop defining your future by your past.

What have you become good at that you may have accidentally mistaken for the only thing you can do?

Experience is supposed to shorten a job search. Right now it is doing the opposite.

In July, 28.3% of job seekers 55 and older had been looking for 27 weeks or longer. And unemployment for workers 55+ climbed from 2.8% to 3.1% that month, even as the national rate fell to 4.1%.

This is not a story about a weak resume. It is arithmetic. Six months is now the likely scenario for an experienced job seeker, not the worst one.

A six-month search does not get solved by a better resume written in week two. It gets solved by decisions made while you still have income, leverage, and time.

That is the real work: My role as your coach is to help you map your goals while you still have options not after the search has already run long.

The day after Labor Day used to mark the start of a season of movement. This year, almost nobody is moving.

The quit rate has sat at 2.0%, a third below its 2021 peak. And 5.9 million people say they want a job but have stopped looking for one.

Standing still feels safe when the exits look narrow. But a career that only moves when someone else moves it is not security. It is a bet and you are not the one holding the odds.

Instead of asking "Where can I get hired next?", ask what you actually want your life to produce? That is the shift from renting a career to owning one.

I help you explore what those options could look like with no pressure, no pitch, just a clearer picture of the possibilities in front of you.

You do not have to make a move today. But you should know what your moves are.

When was the last time a new workplace word made you feel hopeful?

Job hugging. Quiet cracking. Ghost jobs. Revenge quitting.

And those are just four of the eight new terms entering our workplace vocabulary in 2026.

Not one describes a way forward.

Every one of those words is a coping mechanism. A way of managing conditions you didn't set and can't change.

There's another path forward. In the TES Generational Career Confidence Survey, 83% said business ownership is a viable alternative to a traditional career.

Recognizing the problem is easy. Knowing what to do next is harder. That's the work a Career Ownership Coach® does at no cost to you.

What would you do tomorrow if your entire division disappeared?

On the Career Compass Podcast, one guest described exactly that. Every rule a corporate career is supposed to reward had been followed. The division was shut down anyway.

“I sacrificed a lot of flexibility and freedom in exchange for something that’s not there anymore… I should have moved on before I was forced to move on.”

The perception of stability is real. The stability itself has been eroding quietly for years and by the time the decision gets made for you, your options have already narrowed.

In the TES Generational Career Confidence Survey, 66% of respondents said business ownership offers more job security than a traditional job. Not because ownership removes risk, but because it moves the risk into your hands instead of someone else’s.

A house fire is probably unlikely, but a career change isn’t. Which one have you actually prepared for?

September is National Preparedness Month.

You probably have a fire escape plan, an emergency fund, and a will you updated in the last few years. But here’s a tougher question: do you have a backup plan for your career?

Most people don’t. It means preparing for a possible layoff, knowing how much money you really need and considering whether AI could replace your skills.

According to the TES Generational Career Confidence Survey, 83% of Americans think owning a business is a real alternative to a regular job. But most people never actually make a plan to see if that could work for them.

It’s about taking charge of your future, and you can start while you’re still working, when you have options and time on your side.

Have you noticed, somewhere along the way, the job postings became a wish list?

9 required qualifications, 6 Preferred and 22 responsibilities. All under a single title, and a single salary.

When a listing merges two roles into one, the consolidation rarely comes with two paychecks. The person in that seat inherits a workload built for a team and very little say over how any of it is structured.

That may be why, in the TES Generational Career Confidence Survey, 80% of employees said business ownership gives a person more control over their career than a traditional job. Among Millennials, it was 86%.

Most people respond to an overwhelming job description by asking, "Am I qualified enough?"

There’s a better first question: "Is this actually the model I want?"

That’s where I can help. Not with listings or resume, but with what you want your Income and Lifestyle to look like, and whether your current path can realistically get you there.

A career vision is not supposed to be a pretty picture with a few words that collects dust in a frame, gets buried under piles of papers on your desk, or disappears into your less-than-stellar digital filing system.

A career vision should encompass you, both professionally AND personally, AND help you say, “No.”

That may be one of the most practical things I have learned through coaching people at career crossroads.

Once you get clear about the life you are actually trying to build, opportunities become easier to evaluate.

You have a clearer way to ask:

Does this opportunity move me closer to that life, or distract me and pull me further away?

A new job may sound impressive.

A business may have great economics.

A consulting opportunity may flatter your expertise.

A promotion may come with the title you thought you wanted.

But the better question is:

Does this move me toward the life I said I wanted?

That is what makes a vision useful.

It becomes a filter.

Not:

“Is this a good opportunity?”

But:

“Is this a good opportunity for me and my future?”

Those are very different questions.

If that is a question you want to explore more deeply, I’m here to help.
